Glossy black with a short tan head that dies quickly to a fluid surface, browning the body out.
The botanical character of the barrel is so immediately apparent that it actually comes damn near close to mimicking gin even moreso than tequila. This gave me an introductory cough the likes of which I haven't had from booze in ages.
That said, these botanicals cut right through the richness of the Cake, while the pepper, (typically Mexican Cake's greatest strength), has receded to mild levels, allowing the chocolatey malt to shine.
An exercise in dichotomy, the finish has a tannin heavy swallow that's almost port-like. Actually, sherry.
We were lucky to have this on draft at the source before reaching our final destination of Congaree National Park.

Appearance: Arrives pitch black from the tap with very little head from the slow pour; a few speckles appear with each sip
Smell: Roast and chocolate with the Tequila overwhelming the spices
Taste: The Tequila really is powerful here, with the barrel overwhelming the Mexican Cake spice blend; the heat arrives on the finish, however, to remind the palate of the base beer
Mouthfeel: Full bodied with low carbonation
Overall: Occasionally I come across a Tequila barrel-aged beer that I like; unfortunately, this is not one of them

Lots of heat from the peppers. A little bit of tequila presence. The peppers have retained their kick more than the tequila has. If Westbrook ever makes this version again, drink it fresh. Not my favorite Mexican Cake but not sorry I got it.
