Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

French for “season,” Saisons were traditionally brewed in Belgian farmhouses in autumn to be consumed in the late summer during the harvest. Our version of this classic Belgian ale is pale gold, with a fruity and peppery aroma from the Saison yeast strain. Light bodied and crisp on the palate with a very dry finish that makes this the perfect beer for hot weather!

On tap in a house tulip at Trappe Door on 9/18/11

Lightly cloudy, golden yellow hue. Beautiful one finger head thins but leaves excellent lace.

Pleasant, if light, aromas of coriander, clove, grass and a toasted grain note. Very clean. Tastes oddly tangy, though - almost tart. The flavor takes on an earthy aspect with dry spices throughout. Nicely grassy. Very toasty grains. Tart fruit notes. Crisp, sharp feel and on the lighter side as far as feel. Prickly, harsh carbonation - ouch.

Overall impression - it's ok, but too tart and tangy for the style.

Bottle to Pinot Wine Glass
750 ML

Aug 2011 Bottling
Thanks to MikeReaser for this one

App- When I was sitting in a meeting this AM, I saw my bosses legal pad. The beer was that color yellow. A bit slight yellow, a little bit of a hazy saison with some orange mixed in. A good and puffy 2 finger head pulled apart and left some good thick soapy lines.

Smell- It was a solid mix of styles to mix. Belgian golden with a bit of apple and fruits and then a bit dry yeast like a saison. I didnt get the pepper. It was fairly thick on the nose.

Taste- I thought it was flavorful, but still cant quite call it a saison. Its still more of a Belgian Strong pale to me. A bit kicked up fruity esters with a unique yeasty complimenting flavor and then a bit of green grassy apple rounds it all out.

Mouth- A nice light and crisp body. The carbonation was a bit bubbly. The overall residual flavors are a bit spicy and a bit yeasty with some more of the green apple sticking around.

Drink- Its flavorful but just found something a bit off. Maybe the apple, maybe a bit too bubbly. Still a good beer. Thanks Mike.

Hazy dark yellow. Thick, fluffy head. About 1.5 inches In a wine glass

Belgian yeast in the aroma. Slightly sour.

Nice flavor. Highly yeasty. Slightly tart.

Highly carbonated. Medium light bodied with a dry finish

Really decent beer. A great representation of a good saison.

Pours a bright hazy gold, with an ebullient white head, followed by respectable lacing.

Light fruits such as bananas and pears comprise a pleasant, spicy aroma and flavor underscored by a distinctly Belgian yeast, coupled with hints of vanilla and light, flakey croissant.

Taste is further enhanced by sour notes that roll across the middle of the tongue, and a blend of pepper, sweetgrass and bitter hops.

Mouthfeel is as clean and crisp as this style allows. A good balance and light body help make this an exceptionally refreshing summer ale.

Think I'll have another :)

Picked up bottle at GBX and poured into a Mikkeller redneck glass (thanks Zack)!

A: Pours a light, slightly cloudy straw color with a massive, foamy white head that almost refuses to dissipate, even a little. Tons of lacing left on the edges of the glass as it begins to settle and after each sip. Really nice looking!

S: Good balance between fruitiness and spiciness. Slightly earthy and slightly hoppy, but the spiciness really comes through most of all. Somewhat muted aroma, and pretty typical for the style, but pleasant and inviting.

T: The taste follows the aroma well. Fruitiness is comprised by apple, pear, and banana. Spiciness/pepperiness is amped up quite a bit and really vies for dominance with the fruit. A very subtle earthiness is in the background, along with some floral hops. Slightly dynamic, however, nothing is really attention grabbing or surprising.

M: Lighter side of medium-bodied with a good bit of carbonation. Smooth and crisp, yet somewhat prickly on the tongue. Starts out sweeter and then ends spicy and slightly hoppy. Just a tiny bit of a drying effect.

D/O: Kind of a "cookie-cutter" example of the style, with nothing really unexpected or unique, but a nice example nonetheless. It looked great, was tasty, and went down easily. I finished almost the entire bottle myself over the course of the Orange Bowl, and would have like to have another to share after the first. Really nice effort by Westbrook. Will probably go back for more!

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured golden yellow with a two finger white head that subsided to one finger slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, dark fruit, subtle spice, earth, and subtle fruit hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, earth, earthy hop, fruit hop, and a subtle floral note. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a really decent brew. The look on this one was quite nice to say the least. The aroma was very complex and intriguing as I never knew for sure what I was smelling throughout the glass. The flavor was pretty nice as well but not as complex as the aroma. A very nice brew that I would have again. I suggest you have it too if you get the chance.

Growler filled at CBX, poured into a Pint Glass.

Pours a clear gold with a fluffy white head that settles to a nice cap, leaving behind some spotty lacing. Lovely aromas of crisp malt, banana, ripe pear, white pepper, coriander, and bubblegum. Taste follows the nose nicely, but the coriander and spices are the main factor, and they linger on the palate for some time. Mouthfeel is nice and crisp, very refreshing, with a medium body and good carbonation. Overall a very sessionable Saison, excellent after the long day I just had!

a: This was a clear, bright golden color. It poured with a large, airy, lumpy, and exceptionally sticky head.

s: Very nice fruit aromas of peaches, apricots and pears; plus mineral water, peppery yeast, and something softly wild.

t: Lightly tart apricots and pears, faintly sweet sugar cookies, and a very dry, strongly peppery finish. Something about the yeasty apricot reminds me of most things I've tried from De Proef.

m: Light and crisp.

o: Top notch saison, at a great price too!

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a bright yellow color and a cloudy consistency. There was a big, creamy, long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: Had a surprisingly fruity aroma, along with that typical barnyard funk.

T: Tasted of coriander, malt, light hops, banana, bubblegum, and the barnyard funk. This is not a classic saison flavor - the fruit presence makes sure of that, but it is very tasty.

M: A well carbonated beer with a clean finish. Light- to medium-bodied.

O: A unique, drinkable version of a saison.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color; the head looked like whipped egg whites and curtained the tulip

Smell: Fresh mown hay; bready, with hints of coriander, white pepper and minerals

Taste: Pears and apricots, up front, with a growing sense of coriander, minerals and white pepper as the yeast takes over at mid-palate; dry and herbal, after the swallow with plenty of flavor lingering into the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: I thought I was drinking a Dupont clone; this is one of the best domestic Saisons I have encountered and at $5.99 for the 750, ridiculously low-priced
