Vanilla Tree is a Belgian-style dubbel brewed with a variety of dark crystal malts and dark Belgian candi syrup. After fermentation, the beer is aged on whole vanilla beans and toasted oak chips. The result is a wonderfully smooth, malty ale with notes of dark fruit, spice, and (naturally) vanilla and oak!

Bottle courtesy of beerbyrd. Served in a SAVOR wine glass.

Pours a light-medium brown color with a decent off-white head. Not too much lacing on the way down.

The nose carries some really strange notes from the start. There's some fruity malt plus some odd spices. I can't really pick out any vanilla anywhere. Honestly, the whole thing is a muddled mess, and that carries over through the flavor. You could maybe say there's a dubbel somewhere in the background, but I really don't get much out of this besides some odd malt and some spice.

Body is medium and oddly spice. Really, I just don't know what was wrong with this one. It was like some prune juice with spice. Beyond that, I had difficulty describing just what it was that was going on.

This beer is a complete disaster. Gross beyond belief.

Beer is brown and hazy with a lazy off white head of small bubbles, decent retention, no lacing moderate carbonation, looks fine.

Aroma is a mixture between yeast and trash.

Beer is undrinkable, it has this late tobacco-ish roastiness to it, strong but gross. Never again.

From 03/30/12 notes. Bottle shared by Thorpe429 to start off our mini-Westbrook tasting. Poured into a tulip. Bottled on 02/23/12.

a - Pours a very dark brown color with one inch of white head and low carbonation evident.

s - Smells of dark fruits, fruity malts, lightly musty, light roasted notes, light vanilla, some oak, and some spice. Interesting, but a little bit of a weird mix; doesn't seem to mesh well together.

t - Tastes of sweet dark fruits, roasted malts, fruity malts, metallic, light vanilla, spices, pepper, light wood and toasted malts. Like the nose, doesn't mesh well together, and has something of a metallic taste to it. A step down.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. No real heat.

o - Overall a disappointing beer after trying their berliner. Just doesn't mesh well together and the taste is a bit off. Far and away the worst of the four Westbrook beers we tried.

Served this Dubbel on tap, at the brewery, in a pint glass. Poured dark brown color, produced a small tan head, poor retention and left little lacing on the glass. The aroma consisted of some roasted malt, raisin, chocolate and a slight touch of vanilla. Medium in body, this ale featured roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, vanilla bean and some spice...Ginger perhaps? Overall, this ale was ordinary, not a traditional Dubbel and not different enough to make me want to order a second.

A - Pours a dark cloudy brown body with a little fizzy head or not much at all.

S - vanilla, oak & dark fruits. I was thinking subdued vanilla with a dubbel backbone.

T - Very metallic to me. The taste follows the smell.

B - Light bodied carb on all accounts. Seems undercarbed to me.

O - I like what this brewery does. But, this beer isn't dialed in at all.
