Notes/Commercial Description:
This is our interpretation of Gose (pronounced “Gose-uh”), a traditional German-style sour wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback.

I’ve been truly excited to get ahold of this beer, especially after making my way through a case of Anderson Valley’s recent canned Gose. I poured this into a chalice hazed light yellow peach color going on with a highly carbonated white head which dissipates almost as quickly as it forms.

Aroma is super tart, breathe of sea salt, spices are mild but evident coriander additions, the can art is great and Sour-Salty-Delicious is a great three word summary of this beer. Vibrant bright summer beer that I could approach anytime.

Flavor I’m glad there is a revival for this style, a few years ago local brewer Scott Smith at East End Brewing put out “Here it Gose Again”…I recall being blown away by the salty sweet tart wheat base with the spiced coriander notes. I’m glad to see more brewers doing it now this version is simply put, excellent. Strong tart refreshing qualities, almost biting in to a lemon tart…flash of salt comes across with the spicy coriander notes it’s a simple yet refreshing new combination of flavors that will bring most wheat beer haters toward the light. Especially if you already graduated into sour ales, this is sour light compared to some of the wild ales, but it’s unique and fun to drink.

Mouthfeel bone dry finish tart lingering notes with coriander lightly sprinkled in for some bitterness, there might be 5 IBUs total. The salty brine flavor really adds to the dryness of the mouthfeel, the mineral notes clean the palate up a good bit. Carbonation is light enough to let the tartness/salt combo due it’s thing on the palate.

Overall, I hope to see wider distribution of Westbrook even though I understand they are producing enough beer to satisfy their home state and limited distribution in their area. I’m excited to get to travel back to the Carolinas, to gain more access to their beers. Plus some of their contracted dark beers that I get on a limited basis in Ohio from Evil Twin.

No date stamped on bottom of can at 40 degrees into standard pint glass
Aroma of spice and salt
Head small (3 cm), white, fizzy, rapidly diminishing to irregular ring and layer
Lacing poor – a few medium islands with varying sized bubbles
Body light yellow, cloudy
Flavor tart and salty with an odd spicyness and a little citrus. No malt, no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl.
Palate light, watery, lively carbonation.

I was surprised to see coriander as an ingredient. I’m most familiar with this in various Belgium-styled ales but the flavor and aroma here are very different. This is a very refreshing and tasty brew.
