This is our interpretation of Gose (pronounced “Gose-uh”), a traditional German-style sour wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback.

A - Cloudy pineapple juice, small head leaves fast to ring, no lace. Lots of chunky stuff at the bottom third of glass.

S - Funky and tart. Nice aroma.

T - Nice mix. A little saltier than I would normally like, but the sour and the funk are nice. Some champagne quality to it too. Nice interpretation.

M - Good carb, sharp tartness, light bodied.

D - I like one, but I don't think it is something I would session, despite the low ABV.

a great can of gose here, i wish this was available out here all summer long. one of the better american incarnations ive seen, a little higher in salt than most, it really works. some cloudiness to the light copper colored beer, and a solid inch of long lasting white foam on top. it smells great, lots of sourness, and lots of coriander giving it an herbal element that jives nicely with the mineral content of the salt. the salt also gives it a lot of body for a low alcohol wheat based brew, its frothy and sudsy and robust in feel. the taste is balanced really, with a flavorful wheat malt and a nice coriander presence, but i dont get such an herbal hit as i do from the smell. the salt rounds out the finish, i mean, its not salty at all, but its earthy and clean, quick finishing and refreshing. it somehow feels nutritious, good for me, i dont know, one can was not nearly enough. i may have enjoyed the citrus hit of the the gozu more, but this is downright awesome with just enough lactic tartness to make it unique. lovely.

"This is our interpretation of Gose (pronounced 'goes-uh'), a traditional German-style wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback." Brewed in the style of a Gose. At one time a limited release, Westbrook's Gose has made a return to 6 packs in cans on a rotating schedule.

Poured from a 12 oz. can to a pint glass. Served above 56º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a gold-tinged white head of a crisp fizz, slightly frothy consistency over a mild amber, moderately hazy body. Carbonation is light and varied. Retention is low and lacing does not stick. 3

(Smell) Pale malts with a light drizzle of honey esters amongst a fluffy wheat body. A fairly mellow sourness in the aroma creates some balance where balance may not have been expected. Slightly bitter and salty, slightly vinegar-like, the sourness both confounds the aroma and compliments it. Potency is medium. 3.5

(Taste) The aroma significantly understates the presence of salty and sour in this beer. Up front, very tart and sour overtones amidst a pale wheat malt base, finishing with a noticeable contrast to a touch of mildly sweet syrup and bready body on the finish, almost graham-cracker like. Balance is largely in favor of sour over sweet over bitter. Despite the aforementioned differences between this beer and most other light beer styles, it is incredibly tasty and very highly sessionable. I haven't had a Gose quite hit the mark like this one does. 4.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly chewy, tart. Carbonation adds some fluffiness and compliments the bite of the flavor. Body is medium for the style, light/medium overall. Alcohol presence is very low to none. There is great balance to behold in this beer. The combination of salt and coriander makes for a perky contrast with the malt, but doesn't dry out the flavor nor hinder drinkability. The texture overall is lively but not upsettingly so. 4.5

(Overall) Gose beer makes a great summer alternative beer to more common styles, but I can find good reason to seek this beer out regardless of the season. In my opinion, it's a fantastic representative of the style, as there is no shortage of sourness and tartness in the flavor and texture, and the malt flavor provides enough substance to round it out and keep things interesting, yet drinkable. I hope that this beer finds status as a year-round amongst Westbrook's lineup, as it rivals even well-known German recipes of this style. 4.25

A: Very murky yellow golden. Little to no head. Minimal lacing

S: Tart funky lac to sourness. Slight sour citrus notes. Salty.

T: Very tart. A little more tart than I like for the style but still bearable. Salt definitely comes through with a hint of malt and sour citrus.

M: Medium mouth feel. Medium-high carbonation.

O: Enjoying this in Jan. I could see myself enjoying it more on a hot summer day. Nonetheless very enjoyable.
