Notes/Commercial Description:
This is our interpretation of Gose (pronounced “Gose-uh”), a traditional German-style sour wheat beer brewed with coriander and salt. Once nearly extinct, this very refreshing style is making a comeback.

Poured from a can into a Chimay goblet

A- pours a gross looking yellow, very cloudy, with no head at all but some wisps of white on the top. Well, it IS a sour...

S- lemon, funk, a little bit of a saltwater aroma, socks. Love it.

T- light lemon, large funk. The salt aspect of the beer also comes through and adds a savory component to it, quenching my thirst yet making me want more...

M- light bodied, refreshing, and keeps me wanting more.

O- holy crap is this a phenomenal beer. A canned, refreshing sour? Sign me up!

Despite the bright yellow/orange display the body was beautifully hazy. The he as d poured thick and foamy.

The aromas here are a touch offensive but then interesting and fruity. A salty, almost sweaty scent comes a touch before the orchard pear and Apple.

The flavor is absent the salty and full of juicy orchard fruits. Apple wine, pear, smidge of vinegar and barnyard air pass the tongue.

The feel is sour and tangy, light and thin but with a lot of carbonation air to fill the mouth.

My first review - as well as my first Gose. Received in a trade as a last minute replacement for a local IPA

A - completely to style, a swampy and murky, but vibrant yellow

S - Yikes, gym socks rinsed with squeezed limes

T - The tartness hits first, a soured lemon/lime, almost like one of those sweet tart candies. Mid taste is drying, and very lemony almost like a shandy and salty. Completely weird, but not offputting at all. Finished with a mouth watering saltiness, but still tart...

M - The tartness just puckers your palate, and leaves your mouth watering...for another drink of this. Just awesome.

O - I gave it a 3.75 - I'm warming to the style.

12oz can, dated 8/20/2013 on the bottom. Says drink within 90 days. Since I'm drinking this today, 10/10/2013, that makes it almost exactly 90 days. Oops. Poured into an unlabeled snifter.

Review #230.

Pours a very, very hazy golden-straw body. Comes with a very fluffy 2cm white head that dissipates into pretty much nothing.. leaving what looks like unfiltered orange juice. No lacing. Not a very pretty beer by any means.

Smells quite weird to be honest. It smells like grapefruit juice but with a little bit of earthy funk. Not quite full-blown horse blanket or gym socks like in Bruxelles sours, but there is definitely a funk presence there. And more than just a bit of apple cider vinegar acidity in the smell. I am really digging it but it is not a full blown intense etc nose... it's rather mild yet intriguing.

Now this is what I'm talkin' about. Pretty complex beer. Initial grapefruit sweetness transitions into a funky, acerbic acidity that is fairly sour, but not über mouthpuckeringly so. I would say this acidity is like sea water in that I'm thinking there is a little bit of salt but its somewhat subtle. I actually just took out a shaker of sea salt to compare and it tastes quite similar to this aspect of the palate. Finishes with a nice mixture of salt and funk.

Mouthfeel is light bodied, smooth and extremely easy to drink. Not heavy on the palate, leaves just a trace of earthiness and salt. Very sessionable at 4% ABV.

I wish I had a case of this. While its kind of ugly looking, its very easy to drink, super flavourful and leaves me feeling quite satisfied even though this is a 4% session beer. This is putting the Gose style on the list for me and I am looking forward to seeking out more examples of this bygone style.
