Our single-hop rye pale ales are created to showcase the flavor and aroma characteristics of individual hop varieties. The grain recipe is kept the same and only the type of hop is changed from batch to batch. Amarillo is an American hop with a distinct floral citrus aroma reminiscent of oranges.

22-ounce bomber from Charleston Beer Exchange. Pours golden. The nose has some faint Amarillo, but overall it’s quite tame. Some bitterness and a bit too much yeast character.

Served only about 2 hours after dispensing (Green's in Greenville, SC), but clearly under-carbonated. This may be a problem with the vendor rather than brewer, so I won't deduct much for this.
A hazy yellow color with hardly any head. The nose (which seems to deteriorate with warming) is a mix of bready light malt, some light fruit (mainly citrus), a bit of funk, and a barely detectable touch of hops. The hops come forward on tasting, however, where they are slightly dominate the malt by the finish. Some yeast/earthiness here too, along with enough orange to suggest a juice component (although there is none, I assume). {T = 3.75}
M: the light body is too thin and watery; as noted above, rather flat. Actual sensory rating would be below 3 but I am allowing for the possibility of an improperly dispensed
O: a bit unrefined (think homebrew) and under-carbonated, but modestly drinkable and a nicely juicy APA.

Thanks to kkipple for another interesting Westbrook beer. Single hop beers can be interested, although usually not great since it's hard to get all the right flavors from one hop variety, but still very interesting to see how it comes out. Bottled on June 13th, 2012, snot even a couple months old...
it makes a really loud psssttt when opened, and pours a huge fizzy overcarbonated 4 finger head that is 5 times the size of the beer itself poured, fades fairly quickly with pot marked lacing, over murky wheat/wit orange beer.
Nose has the same aroma as the last single hop one from them, a yeasty aroma that at first seems like infection but isn't, just yeast gone crazy. A light bready malt base, with hints of spicy rye and toasty reddish malts, just a hint of the fruity citrusy hop swimming somewhere below.
Taste starts with loads of foam as it seems to just explode into foam as it hits my mouth, and quickly turns to yeast flavors, again over crazy yeast that went wild on itself, and bready malts. Some spicy rye again, light reddish malts. The hops are very background, just a light bitterness, with hint of citrus and rind, and a light earthy hop flavor, but not much otherwise. Finish is drier, yeasty, and not much else. With a fairly fresh bottle that is definitely a problem with the beer itself, how about a little quality control?!
Mouth is med bodied, way too much over carbonation.
Overall bah!!! It's pretty much all yeast, carbonation, and light malt flavors, with barely any hop left. just like the last one, big quality control issues, with overcarbonation, yeast going wild, hops disappearing, malts barely able to do anything. The last I thought may have been a fluke, but this seals it as bad. Its even pretty much a drain pour as all I get is yeast, carbonation, and just a touch of malts, It's not drinkable.

Appearance: A foamy pour with a head that eventually settles atop the hazy goldenstraw liquid; lots of clumpage as one would expect
Smell: Bready with a nice floral citrus aroma
Taste: Bready and citrusy, up front but the flavors really fade, after the swallow
Mouthfeel: Light bodied and moderately carbonated; rather aqueous
Overall: Quite a few flaws here, from the watery mouthfeel to the overcarbonation; not up to the high standards I have for beers from this brewery
