Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

This year’s version (in our opinion) blows the first batch out of the water. The malt bill is simplified, resulting in a lighter, drier beer – which allows the massive hop additions to shine through. A mix of fresh grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges was added to the boil, and this batch also features a blend of several different American and New Zealand hop varieties, instead of just Cascade. At 9.5% ABV, this beer means business.

Thanks to dogdoc for this one. Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a TCCB pint glass.

A: Pours a cloudy deep gold with a one-finger white head and moderate visible carbonation.

S: Big caramel notes from malt, a citrus background with some grassy hop notes in there too.

T: Sweet caramel, then pine resin and some orange rind from the hops. This is coming across overly sweet and underly complex.

M: A bit heavy bodied, sticky sweet mouthfeel, decent carbonation sensation, alcohol fairly well hidden.

O: Did i say sweet? Almost like an orange dreamsicle sweetness. It isn't a bad beer, but I went into it with hopes of being blown away. More citrus in the nose than the palate, but not huge amounts in either. I'm just not a huge fan of this beer, but it's not bad.

Poured the murky, orange-amber beer from a 22 oz bottle dated 19 June 2012 into a snifter with nary a head. Nonetheless, some lacing was left on the glass,

The fruity nose foreshadows a flavor [3.75] in which grapefruit, lemon and other vague citrus fruit flavors dominate, with a bit of pine resin too. Plenty bitter, as expected, but the bitterness and harshness of a high ABV DIPA are both tempered by a detectable sweetness and light maltiness.

O: Certainly not a bad beer, but disappointing overall, excepting mouthfeel where it does relatively well for a high ABV DIPA. Also, overpriced; this local (same state: SC) beer cost ($8-$9) as much or more than fine beers coming all the way from the West coast (e.g., many from Stone and Rogue).

Served from bottle into a RJ Rockers shaker. Poured a slightly hazy golden yellow-orange with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, lemon, lime, citrus, citrus hop, and grapefruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus, lemon, citrus hop, grapefruit, and lime. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. The citrus aspect going on here was definitely the dominate aroma and flavor. However I was really expecting to be completely blown away by the hops on this one due to a recipe tweek that lightened the malt bill on this one to make the hops dominate it. It really in my opinion ended up being really well balanced with a ton of various citrus aspects going on. Definitely a well done brew that I would suggest any IPA fan try at least once.

Another great beer from Msquared2! Thank you!

Appearance. Pours a hazy honey-amber with a thin white head.

Smell. Big grapefruits, oranges, lime, some soda crackers and cedar.

Taste. Sweet and tangy citrus fruits, floral hops, some toasty, crackery malts. Alcohol is really well hidden.

Mouthfeel. Not quite full bodied, low and smooth carbonation. Just a little warmth.

Overall. A really nice, big, and as promised, very citrusy dipa. Yum.

Cask at the brewery.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown with no head. Amazingly juicy aromas, just loaded with orange, grapefruit, and lime, resinous hops, and a perfectly ample sweet malt backbone. Taste is similarly juicy and just as amazing as the nose, loaded with citrus oils and more sticky hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a medium mouthfeel and low carbonation. A really great take on an already amazing DIPA, I'm glad I happened to be there for the cask!

Bomber poured into a snifter
Bottled on: July 19, 2012

A: Pours a translucent golden amber with just under a finders width of off white colored head, which quickly dissipates down  to a thin film and bubbly outer ring.  Leaves a fair amount of lacing in streaky patches, along with some alcohol legs down the sides of the glass.

S:Huge citrus aroma, most notably grapefruit and freshly peeled oranges. There are significant resiny hop aromas as well.  A solid malt backbone brings some sweetness to the nose.  The faintest hint of booze.  Excellent aroma, this flat out just smells great.

T: More malt presence than I anticipated, but also lots of grapefruit. This is definitely sweeter than I expected, reminiscent of a grapefruit slice dipped in sugar,  like when I was a kid.  Resiny hop characters again on the tongue, hints of lemon zest and some piney bitterness on the finish.  Honestly, not as citrus prominent as I anticipated, but still damn good.  Alcohol makes itself know throughout the drink.  For the most part  it's a welcomed complexity in my eyes and adds to, rather than detracts, from the palate profile.  However, it does get a touch strong towards the end of the second glass from the bomber.

M/D:  Such a great smoothness to this beer.  Medium bodied, with a subdued but appropriate carbonation, and a light slightly drying finish.  ABV is noticeable but restrained, and the drinkability is just scary good.  This was flirting with perfect until it got a touchy boozy towards the end.  Still great in this department though.

O: Overall, a really great beer.  Westbrook seems to hit a home run with every beer of theirs that I try, so big props to them.  Also, a job well done to the guys at The Charleston Beer Exchange who collaborated on this one.  Well done.
