when I heard this was coming to town, how could I not snag one? enjoyed from an evil twin wine glass. super tasty toasty stout without being over roasted. the chocolate balances out the roastiness. well worth the pickup and hunt.

look: Dark brown, nearly opaque. Full mocha head. Looks like an imp stout should.
smell: Roasty vanilla smoke. Very nice smoke on top of a creamy Imp stout nose.
taste: Even better than the nose. Semi-sweet vanilla. cocoa milkshake with roasty, smoky notes.

22 ounce bottle, "date filled" on label is 2/17/16. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that stayed around for a really long time. There's a decent amount of lacing. I like the aroma, the brew smells like burnt/charred malt, chocolate, coffee, dark fruit and molasses. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some licorice and earthiness noticeable. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and creamy with moderate carbonation. I think it's a good imperial stout, I liked it. However it's pricey at $15.99 a bomber.

Massive pitch black roast of coffee, edged with bitter char, sweetened as if with blackstrap molasses. Sweet up front with ample wet char; dries with more dark bitterness. Stays smooth throughout, with a soft, foamy feel on the lips. Roasty, slightly toasty, full of rich chocolate, sinuous vanilla, and dark roasted espresso. A beautiful Russian imperial stout.

large shared 2012 bottle.
Pours thick and dark with a decent head.

Aroma - excellent and moderately strong. The dark roasted grains are not as pronounced as they are upon tasting, but the alcohol and dark fruit notes are more evident.

Flavor: Rich and moderately complex, with strong notes of very dark roasted malts. Slightly more sweet than bitter until the aftertaste. Hint of licorice. Well hidden ABV!

Overall: one of the best Evil Twin beers I've had.

3 years aging in the bunker

Smokiness and mild char dominate. No alcohol burn. Residual sweetness balances the char.

Very good. Not epic , but another great variant of the 12% stout that spawns Lil B and Biscotti Break. Ages very well. No oxidation detected and could have gone another year, but I doubt it would have improved.

A viscous black pour floating a solid chocolate milk colored head, amazing retention, with thick lacing in my glass from start to finish. Aroma of dark chocolate, tobacco, leather, a bit of smoke in there too. Big flavors of tobacco up front, giving way to bitter dark chocolate, figs, berries and burnt wood - the high ABV is hidden well - especially after 2 years of sitting under my house. The body is big and warming from the high ABV, with a dry mouthfeel and finish. Overall amazing sipper and a solid representation of the style.

Beer #999 for me. Poured from a bomber into an enlarged snifter. This was bottled November 6, 2012 so almost 2 years ago.

Appearance: Pours thick and black and leaves a finger of brown head that fades relatively quickly to a brown rim around the glass. (4.5)

Smell: Roasted malts, dark chocolate, licorice, char, some must, hint of figs and plums. (4.25)

Taste: Big roasted malts, dark/milk chocolate, licorice, charred malts, some smoke. Big charry, slightly ashy finish. (4)

Mouth-feel: Low carbonation (but definitely present) with a medium to thick, creamy body. Nice feel. (4.5)

Overall: Big roasty flavors and aromas along with a bit of ashyness which is interesting. Nice full body and the alcohol is masked well at 12%. (4)

a - poured a one finger thick creamy tan head into a tulip glass that settled into a thin ring. the body was dark black.
s - chocolate, some coffee with a slight alcohol burn.
t - roasted coffee, chocolate, some dark fruits, alcohol burn.
m - kind of flat and thin.
o - i had high hopes for this but the carbonation level really took away from a promising beer. the heat went well with the beer.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. Stains the glass. Small head. Doesn't last.

Smell - A little smokey. Boozy as hell. Strong roasted malt. Licorice.

Taste - Sweet caramel. Licorice. Deep caramel. Smoke is more muted, but present. Sweet.

Mouthfeel - Thick. Low carbonation. Viscous and a little sweet.

Overall - Tasty stout. Tastes like it's smoked, but I can't find any info that it is.

Appearance: Pours a motor oil black with a half inch of mocha foam that gets quite bubbly like a pancake indicating it is ready to be turned; leggy and lacy, leaving dots and squiggles of lacing behind

Smell: Fudge, black licorice and hints of smoke and espresso

Taste: Fudge and black licorice, up front, with a growing smoke influence; bitter espresso elements, in the mid-palate; after the swallow, the meaty smoke tones impact the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied, with low to moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: An interesting stout, more like an American Double Stout than a RIS but still quite good; I like the smoke and licorice elements very much

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass. Filled November 6th 2012.

Out of the bottle pours, quite dark walnut black and leaves a same opaque and quite dark body color also. Head doesn't make much, but there's some coffee brown like color, and it manages to keep a 3mm collar while drinking and not looking filmy.

Really nice bouquet on this beer. Slightly fruity, mixing of nice charring roast. A little bit of tobacco too, and all nicely balanced and complimenting each other, quite solid and impressive.

There's a good chewy texture to this, with a ripping grain. Slightly hot, with a very noticeable hop bitterness on the finish that makes the heat more tolerable. Matches well with some pine like heat and toasty roast character complimenting each other nicely. Diversity is not as common in comparison with the nose, not much tobacco, and virtually no fruit character. Nice bitter cocoa finish on the swallow also.

Quite a nice solid Russian Imperial either way.

Black as can be. Thick, heavy, and rich in appearance. Creamy brown head. Leaves an oily, sticky sheen. A perfectly gorgeous imperial stout.

Huge roast, espresso, and fudge notes erupt from the glass. Incredibly expressive aroma. There's some dark fruits and licorice emerging as well, especially as the beer warms.

A hugely flavorful stout--it's almost flooring how flavorful this is. Huge amounts of bitter roast and espresso notes, perhaps along with a touch of smoke. Dark fruits, licorice, and raisin fudge brownie make up the majority of the flavor profile. This is like nothing I've had before.

Full in body. Creamy. Luscious. Coating. Perfect.

There's just so much flavor here. It's shocking. While impressive, it certainly hurts it's drinkability.

Pour is jet black, viscous, with a dark brown head, thick, and a few bubbles on top. The nose is ashy, light roast, olive, touch of herbal hop. Taste is same, roast, ash, coffee bean, faint chocolate. Finish has some citrus hop and light herbal note, the roast lingers. Body is full, carbonation is nicely rounded. Flavors are well integrated but not of my favorite blend.

An extremely nice Imperial Stout. Pours pitch black, but with average viscosity and a tan head that disappears very quickly. Very well integrated (rather than "watered down"), and silky smooth, but with quite deep flavors of licorice, roasted notes, bitter chocolate, and coffee notes. Surprisingly well hidden 12% abv.

Bomber at Torst. Watered down imperial stout. A little nauseating tailpipe smel. Some lace. Mostly toasted but also burnt toast taste. Dry finish. Maybe this was better very fresh, but did not age at all, an issue I have with several Westbrook beers.I had to share this out with anyone who would help me not waste a bottle.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter at cellar temperature.

L – Jet black color with a thick, 1.5-finger, creamy, brown head. Great retention and some initial patchy lacing. The consistency of this thing is as thick as motor oil. Awesome look for an imperial stout.

S – Mostly rich dark chocolate and roasted coffee aromas. There are touches of molasses and plums here, as well. Nicely layered and decently complex.

T – It starts off sweet with rich dark chocolate, molasses, caramel, and a touch of vanilla. As the taste progresses, dark fruits like plums come into the mix. Toward the finish, there’s a big blast of bitter and dry roasted coffee and some tobacco. Very tasty.

F – Full-bodied with average carbonation, a viscous, velvety, and creamy mouthfeel, and a bittersweet and very dry finish. Bittersweet dark chocolate and bitter roasted coffee flavors linger for a nice bit. There’s also a touch of warmth from the alcohol.

O – This is an awesome imperial stout. It’s not as complex in the aroma and taste as some examples that I’ve had, but it’s crazy thick and very drinkable for 12% ABV. Once again, another big hit from Westbrook. I’m sure Evil Twin did its part here, as well.

Bottle pour at the bottle share held at Chloe's inside Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.

Filled 11/6/12.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, vanilla, and smoke. Taste is much the same with a smoke flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

This is a smexy lookin' stout. Strong coffee and cocoa tones. Molasses is showing a good bit too. It's fairly boozy as well. Too much so, I'd have to say. The feel seems to be a bit thin on the liquid as well. Overall, a pretty nice ris. Could use some smoothing out really. And, the price is quite high (and for what?).

Thanks to foofaa aka Dan for sharing this growler shared with me and Kristen, enjoyed chilled in a tulip.

The color is opaque black with a good sized medium tan head with very tight bead that falls to a ring with wispy spotty lace. The smell is good with a decent amount of dark chocolate and subtle spice with gentle aroma of alcohol and mild toast. The feel is very good, lots of malt with clean yeast profile and moderate carbonation making it feel light for a 12% ale with mild alcohol as it warms with mostly dry finish.

This is a tasty stout -you get a lot of dark grain character with subtle chocolate elements and a light smokiness in the back with subtle briny hop aspect near the finish with only a smidge of alcohol flavor and somewhat biscuit element as it finishes dry. Overall I was pleased with the drinkability but it certainly is a sipper, I was glad I was able to split this with friends since the abv comes out a bit after the chill wears off.

32oz growler into an oversized tulip glass. Pours a jet black in the glass, topped with a think head of milk chocolate colored foam. This maintains a rich ½ finger cap, soaping the sides of the glass with sticky lacing. The aroma has a lot of roast smokiness going on with it, almost like burnt coffee, with tangier notes of ripe citrus, chocolate and caramel all working themselves in as well. This is flavorful but seems like it could be a bit more robust in the nose. The taste is VERY burnt and roasty feeling, leaving a good bit of smoky char lingering on the tongue. Bitter green citrus is present, as is some mostly balancing chocolate sweetness but it’s that roast that really sets this off. The feel is full bodied and chewy with a bit of sharpness on the tongue. That 12% is just ridiculously well hid here and probably elevates this beer a bit above what it normally should be based on the flavors. This beer is very aggressive though, especially with the roast, and while it definitely packs a punch, I wish that there had been an overall greater complexity and depth to the flavors. Definitely not quite worth what I paid for this fill.

Big thanks to Kegatron for sharing this brute with me. 1-liter swingtop growler into a snifter. The brew appears black in color with the most faint edging of lighter brown showing around the edges when it is held up to the light. A rich finger of silky smooth brown head rests atop fading slowly leaving some finger-like strings of lacing effect sticking to the glass.

The aroma is bold and roasty. Very aggressive with a combination of burnt to ashy charred grain with an ample amount of herbal hops also included. Earthen, with a hint of anise and leathery tobacco. Some solvent alcohol starts to emerge as the brew warms up and is swirled more.

The flavor of this brew is again, quite aggressive with a hearty amount of burnt grain flavoring. Suggestions of strong bitter coffee couple with earthen flavors that are somewhat ashy and tobacco-like to leathery. A strong aftertaste of bitter cacao lingers after each sip. As this brew warms up, the 12% abv comes out with a solvent burn across the back of the throat. The hops are readily evident in this brew with an herbal to almost vegetative component.

This is a medium to fuller bodied brew with a moderate amount of carbonation. No jokes here folks, this is a big aggressive brew. You need to put your big boy pants on here and brace yourself for one of the most balanced brews when it comes to strong bitter roasted grain, solvent alcohol and ample hops. The bitterness in this is quite forward from seemingly a combination of both hops and highly kilned malts. At times, I almost get the feel of this being a strange hybrid between a RIS and super strong black ipa. Many thanks agan Heath for sharing this with me, I can't imagine I would have otherwise had the opportunity to try this.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours pitch black with a fine medium brown head with good retention and lacing. Robust aroma of dark toasted malt, chocolate, light vanilla and coffee. Flavor is dominated by dark toasted malt and charred coffee with light hints of vanilla anc cocoa. Hot. Finishes with a pleasant hop bite, but the other flavors drop off abruptly. A long aftertaste of light char and grassy hops. Medium bodied with nice creaminess. A very nicely made stout on the roasted / charred end of the spectrum. I greatly enjoyed this and feel fortunate that I got one of the few bottles to arrive in our area (right place at the right time!). I doubt if I will see another one, but I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Appearance: black sludge, small mocha head, non-retentive.

Aroma: high roast, chocolate, fudge, smoke, char.

Taste: dark fudge, woodsy char, smokey oak, roasted malts, dark fruits.

***Definitely chewy and thick. No real booziness, but a definite bottle to share with its heft. Undeniably good though.
