Pours a pitch black, opaque, very dark, rich brown head. Dissipates to a ring, with lots of lacing. The aroma is heavy on the roast, with dark fruits, bitterness, coffee, and cocoa. Taste leads with dark fruits, earthy yeast, bitter cacao, light coffee, big roast finish. Full bodied, chewy, and thick. Alcohol is well hidden and it drinks quite easy.
While Mexican Cake may have tastes better initially, it can get a bit spicy as it warms...this stays quite consistent, if not better as it warms. A great beer overall.

This Baltic stout pours a thick, creamy, motor-oil black with minimal head, but there is definitely some stickiness to the lacing. Aromas I am noticing are chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and a hint of smoke. There is also surprisingly a slight touch of some booze, which almost reminds me of a bourbon barrel aged brew (which this is not). The beer tastes great. It is a chocolate and roasted malt bomb. There is a wonderful sea saltiness that I generally associate with Baltic Porters, but to have this in a stout is quite interesting and appealing. A good amount of smokiness can be detected as well. My bottle is about 6 months old, and there is still a substantial amount of alcohol heat. It would be a neat experiment to try aging this one. Super thick and creamy, dare I say "chewy" mouth feel. Texture and flavor are top notch. I can almost imagine this being barrel aged. It would be a great brew to throw in bourbon barrels for a few months. But then again, it is great the way it is. I am just a barrel-aged junkie.
Overall, I highly recommend this one. My first stout from Westbrook and I hope to try more. Mexican Cake is definitely next on the list!
