Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

For our Second Anniversary beer, we tapped into the legendary fictional adventures of the mythical Cap'n Skoon to bring you this monster Baltic Stout. It's big and roasty like an imperial stout but fermented with a German lager yeast. Ideal for sipping now, or be like the Cap'n and stash some away in your cargo hold for the years to come. Cheers!

A - Pours a very dark brown with a fine dark brown head that fades fast.

S - Chocolate, malty, subtle roast.

T - Bitter chocolate and coffee, roasted - toasted malts.

D - Good carbonation with a medium body.

O - Bitter, but decent flavors. Middle of the road to me.

22 oz. bomber poured into a Duvel Tulip style glass. While pouring the glass it's a hard fudgy brown color, but blackness fills the glass and clings to the edges as it rises in the glass, even when held up to the light. Deep red and brown thick frothy looking head, a couple of medium sized bubbles but mostly small. Really good lacing, coats the glass and there's a strong film skimmed across the top the whole way through.

Smell is good, most of the classic aromas you'd expect from a good heavy stout, but on the sweeter end. Kind of like there's a slight hint of bakers chocolate sprinkled in with a heavy amount of milk chocolate. Slight charred and smokey aromas as well.

Taste is really good. Again with nice aromas with chocolate and hints of coffee. Lots of dark and deep roasted grains, good malt bill. I mentioned a charred aroma in the nose, it's not as strong here, more like a hearty roasted, like if you were put some peanuts or some other shelled nut in the oven or over a fire, so I guess slightly nutty is a fair description in the flavor profile as well.

Mouthfeel is extremely interesting. I think I have a love/hate relationship with it. At first the flavor doesn't seem to linger, but the more you drink it, the beer flavor tends to linger more and more. Might have trailed off a little since it's a year old, but still nice. Strong flavor that is a pretty otter chocolaty, but full flavored all the way and has an earthy bitter finish. Overall I really can't believe how light the beer is. It doesn't sit heavy AT ALL even though it's so full flavored. According to the label it's brewed with German lager yeast which is probably a main reason why. Alcohol is well masked, this is one that should be a slow sipper, but DANGEROUSLY drinkable. Bottle is a lot, but is great and could be consumed by any stout lover, if you have more of this lying around and haven't drank it yet, it's something that can be consumed individually, but wouldn't share it with more than 2 people. I felt guilty cracking this on my own, but this is one that 12+ ounces really does the beer so much more justice.

Great beer, love that they went for this for the second anniversary. Thanks EasyReader for sending this bottle, it's phenomenal!

Thanks to AtlCarl for sending me one more bottle of southern goodness, near to a place I hope to be visiting during the depths of this MN winter that's almost upon us. 22 oz. bottle dated 12/18/12, split with my wife.

My 11 year old pour expertly & the brew is dark black with carbonation that's close to invisible to the naked eye. Nose sits down in first class: lovely fudge wafting from the kitchen when the brownies are cooking, & the coffee pot churning away right next to the stove. So good I don't even want to put it in my mouth & ruin the illusion of greatness. Or is it illusion? Hmmm.

Cap'n Skoon's Ballistic Stout is no sleight of hand. The seductive nose slides into a sublime taste experience that starts out strong just as the nose does, with restive chocolate & a sharp dose of roast that veers towards coffee. Beneath that hot mess is a touch of hop bittering, hint of a distant bonfire, & a deep balancing sweetness. Drinkable enough that Westbrook should be slapped with a felony if this is sold on tap.

This is an unexpected 'wow' beer. Too many middle-of-the-road stouts have bored my palate lately, & this brew hits all the right notes, hard. Westbrook? Do more like this & the gose. An excellent beer.

A - Pours pitch black, brown espresso one finger head with great lacing/retention.

S - Heavy roasted malts, cocoa powder, licorice and bitter coffee.

T - Again with the big roasted malts all throughout. Also getting molasses, dark fruits, bitter coffee and cocoa powder.

M - Full bodied, low carbonation. Creamy, smooth and chewy. Too drinkable.

O - Such a treat! Haven't had a beer this roasty that wasn't smoked on purpose in a while. Just a great beer through and through.
