Thanks to dogdoc for sending this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into a TBBC pint glass.
A: Deep brownish-orange, quite hazy, with a thin white head and just a few bubbles of visible carbonation.
S: Caramel malts, brown sugar, and some pine and fruity hops lurking about in the background. Not a bad aroma, but this smells more like a barleywine.
T: Sweet malt, brown sugar, grassy & pine hops, and malty sweet into the finish. This is clearly a barleywine.
M: Heavy sticky body, noticeable alcohol heat, and carbonation on the low side.
O: The bottle I had was exactly three months old - not the freshest, but if this started as a hop-forward DIPA it was the fastest-deteriorating hop profile I've even experienced. I've cellared other DIPAs for over a year (some accidentally, some on purpose), and found them to have significantly less barleywine character than this does. It's not a bad barleywine at that...but completely wrong for the style on the label. I've scored this as an American Barleywine. For style, I would have given it a 2.9 or so.
