Notes/Commercial Description:
Thomas is the third installment in our "Bearded Farmer" series of saisons. In keeping with the farmhouse brewing tradition, each successive beer is brewed a little (or a lot) differently than the ones before it. Thomas is brewed with pilsner and Munich malts, hopped with New Zealand Wakatu, Motueka, and Pacific Gem hops, and fermented with a single French saison yeast strain.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Hazy medium amber color with a huge 5-finger rocky, bubbly, cream-colored head. Really nice retention and some nice patchy lacing.

S – Pale bready and cereal malt, black pepper and coriander yeast, and a generous helping of grapefruit, orange, and tropical fruit hop notes. Much hoppier than the other Bearded Farmers and no Brett funk to be found – not to say that that’s a bad thing. It’s just different.

T – Follows the nose pretty well with a few added flavors. It starts off with sweet bready, cereal malt and orange ester flavors. As the taste continues, the peppery yeast appears, followed by smooth hoppy bitterness with grapefruit, orange, mango, and somewhat woody and herbal notes that weren’t apparent in the nose.

F – Light-to-medium-bodied with great carbonation, a creamy but crisp mouthfeel, and a bittersweet, earthy, slightly spicy, and dry finish. Herbal and woody bitterness and earthiness lingers the longest along with a hint of orange rind.

O – This is a really nice saison. I would say that I probably prefer this to the other two Bearded Farmers. I wish there was some Brett in here, though. If a little bit of musty funk was added to all of this sweet, spicy, and hoppy goodness, the end result would be magnificent. Still, it’s a very drinkable and tasty beer from Westbrook.

Thanks to AtlCarl, who I now know is as suave in person as he is in the boxes of beer that he dispenses across the country. 750ML bot-tel split with my saison-questioning wife.

The pour is a shade of orange that would make a mixologist proud: unnatural. Nose is a preview of ripes oranges, farmer's market flowers, bit of freeze-dried banana. I've eaten freeze dreid bananas in the back-country. Once. Won't do that again.

Bearded Thomas is a weird, fizzy, flaky mess. Oranges try to compete with the saison yeasts, fail. Yeastiness gets the upper hand & flips off the palate, nose, throat, & thigh bone, just for good measure. Citrus, banana, orange flit in & out of the yeast, but they're pretty much drowned. Overly carbonated, per my wife, & I agree, tingles like champagne going down. Half a bomber? Too much.

This doesn't have much in the way of redeeming qualities. Flavor profile is too yeasty, not enough beery, hard to drink, too much carbonation. Not much to admire here, & not going to bother to finish about half of this. Not a good effort by a good brewery.
