Served in an Ohio State shaker pint glass.

What is this, a beer commemorating the unification of the German Empire? Anyway, this stuff pours a dark garnet-tinged sienna topped by a finger of light khaki foam. The nose comprises dark chocolate (straight bakers' style, yo), odd pine resin, a hint of wintergreen, and a touch of treacle. The taste brings in more of the same, with the inherent bitterness of the constituent parts really trashing the place, fighting with each other as much as my tongue. Luckily, though, things disappear after a short while, keeping me from having to taste this for very long. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, were it not for the lack of lingering flavor, this would be pretty awful. Still, it ain't very good at all, my general bias against the style notwithstanding. Weak and clashy.

A: Pours black with a thin tree bark-brown head that fades to form a ring around the glass and some splotches in the middle. Any lacing quickly recedes. Surprisingly fluid looking and little head retention for such a dark beer.

S: Moderately dark chocolate, roasted malt, some faint pine hops in the background. Occasional sour smell, sometimes mixed with a dash of alcohol.

T: Never had this combo before. Bitter dark malt and chocolate, again the faint hops in the background, decidedly a pine resin showing. Finish is surprisingly quick; almost goes down like water, leaving only a slight bitter effect (can't quite call it a flavor by itself) in my mouth. Initial taste is very favorable, pretty well balanced, but ultimately comes up a bit short in character.

M: Again, like water- this time a good thing. Not at all following its stout-like appearance, this leans towards the IPA family, with present carbonation. Were it not for the heavy flavors it would be a quenching beer.

O: Another fair product by the Chicago Beer Company, this beer has malts so dark you'd think they were toasted in the Great Chicago Fire itself. Solid in just about every category, but the super quick exit of the flavors was a bit disappointing, and the lingering bitterness was a little off-putting. I do have to applaud them for trying their hand at an uncommon beer style (I haven't noticed many others), and the artwork featuring an ominous silhouette of a city skyline sets the tone of this dark brew very well.

Appearance: Pitch black, beige head, OK lacing (4.00)

Aroma: Roast that borders on burnt coffee with a hint of soy sauce. Faint piney hops (3.5)

Flavor: Luckily not quite so bracing on the palate. Smoother roast and chocolate, but again the hop flavor is pretty muted. You can get a touch of citrus and pine though. Almost more of a robust porter. (3.75)

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and carbonated. Dissipating finish (3.8)

Overall: 3.75

For a BLACK IPA - I love this beer. It is so easy drinking. I thought it looked like a porter but drank like a lager and felt like an IPA.

It is Smokey, creamy, and has a slight after taste of coffee. It is one of the very few Black IPA's out there that are good.

I love this beer. This is a great after dinner beer to relax too.
