Frothy! Quite a good head for a barley wine, light tan and lacy, topping a clear, maple syrup amber-colored body. Smells like: light brown sugar and grappa. With a hint of cheese? (Old hops? Lactic acid?)
Flavor is also really heavy on the brown sugar. Like drinking a brown sugar Pop-Tart. With a splash of rum! And honey! It's sweet – to style, right? It's nice, right? I'm not so sure. There's no balance and nothing to really sink your teeth into. The booze is too forward, and so is the sweetness; no bitterness, nor depth, nor body, is there to carry or contrast them.
Pretty disappointing, really. I hate to say it, but this tastes an awful lot like Special Brew mixed with Scottish tablet.
