Pours nearly pitch black except for a deep reddish brown tinge when held up to the light,a half finger beige colored head atop.Milk chocolate notes jump out in the nose with light nuttiness, although I don't get any smoky chipotle the aromas really stand out for me.Lightly carbonated wich is good just a tad thin but it doesn't take away from the flavor profile in any way.Mildly sweet chocolate at the onset of the palate with that hint of nuttiness, the chipotle comes in the finish and lingers in the back of the throat nicely. What a cool beer from a "new to my area" Yorkshire brewer,I will be trying other stuff from Ilkley in the future.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2014. Acquired some time back from Trembling Madness in York. Described on the label as a chocolate chipotle stout brewed with chocolate malt, real chocolate and chipotles. Montezuma's revenge awaits the unwary....

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A deep reddish-brown hue that appears black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of sweet chocolate - not unlike a milk chocolate bar. Underpinned by hints of sugar and roasted malt. Surprisingly one-dimensional but pleasant enough.

Tastes of roasted malt with a spicy chocolate character and a bitter finish. Notes of roasted grain, subtle burnt notes, chocolate, chilli spice, mild smoke, a hint of molasses, faint dried fruit and earthy yeast. Slightly sweet, with a warming spiciness and a slight hop kick in the background. A balanced, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body for the strength. Spice notes stimulate the palate. Mildly astringent, followed by an aftertaste of chocolate, chillies and roasted malt.

Rather nice - Ilkley have taken a challenging style and made a good fist of it. Looks the part, while the aroma is deceptively sweet and chocolate-laden. The flavour is a superb blend of roasted malt, chocolate and chipotles that delivers a dark, spicy twang. Body is OK but could stand to be thicker and creamier. Overall this is a treat for the senses. If you like chillies and chocolate then this is the brew for you.

500 ml bottle with a BB date of April 2015 served cool in a goblet.

Pours clear, near opaque, dark red-brown. Limited head and retention.

Aroma:chocolate; chocolate malts and a hint of coffee.

Flavor: intense and delicious dark chocolate; hints of coffee, toast, smoke and dark fruits. Light but fairly obvious chiptole pepper. Lingering, mildly bitter and smoky aftertaste of dark roasted grains and chipotle peppers with hints of coffee and hops.

Feel: smooth, full body with mildly lively carbonation. Very mild heat (pepper).

O: highly reccommended, especially for chocolate lovers.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only slight traces of red are visible near the corner of the glass when it is held up to the light. It poured with a short tan head that quickly died down, leaving delicate lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of dark chocolate are present in the nose.
T: As in the smell, the taste starts off with rich flavors of chocolate and has a light amount of associated bitterness. Notes of chipotle become noticeable towards the finish and linger through the aftertaste.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The chipotle lends a little heat to the finish.
O:The taste of this beer is rather interesting as it transitions to rich flavors of dark chocolate to spicy flavors of chipotle.

A: Pours a clear and opaque jet black in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and moderate amounts of cola brown highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a medium sized patch of mottled extremely thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of milk chocolate with lighter notes of cocoa and vanilla.

T: Upfront there is a light flavor of roasted malts which is followed by a moderate to strong flavor of rich milk chocolate and just a touch of cocoa powder with just a hint of sweetness. There are hints of vanilla and a light to moderate flavor of chipotle pepper spice that seems to intensify slightly as the beer warms up. Hints of bitterness in the finish which fades quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Really a very good authentic take on Mayan/Mexican Chocolate in a beer - easy to drink and enjoyable with a really nice but subtle presence of chipotle peppers. Definitely one I would grab again.
