First had: on tap at their brewpub

Nice clear pour, somewhere between copper and amber in color, with a nice white head that retained and laced well. Nose has a decent malt base, but is markedly hop-forward, with a aroma similar to what you get when you squeeze a freshly steeped hop bag. Very nice taste, bordering somewhere between an APA and an AIPA, and could probably pass off as either; fresh hops, and lots of them, with a solid bready malt base, some caramel sweetness, crisp and drying finish. Medium body, and easily drinkable.

Easily the best beer GM had to offer.

Had on-tap at the Microbrewery

Appearance - A moderate golden color with a decent retaining head. Larger carbonation bubbles clung to the sides of the glass.

Smell – A very good citrus hop aroma first meets the nose, with an ever so slight sweet caramel aroma present. This caramel aroma however is quickly lost as it is pushed aside at the end by more citrus aroma.

Taste – A nice malty sweetness first hits the tongue. With some caramel and toffee notes. These are soon subdued by some nice citrusy and grapefruit hop flavors. Some floral notes come through in the end rounding out the taste quite nicely.

Mouthfeel –Lighter in body then I had anticipated. While lighter than expected there was a subtle creaminess about it, which soothed the palete. This combined with a moderate level of carbonation made it very drinkable and enjoyable.

Overall – A very nice “Sweeter IPA”. More soothing and less biting then the traditional IPA. If you have the chance give it a try.

A growler filled at the Hopshop in State College. Nice to see locals getting prime exposure for growler fills. Opened yesterday; reviewed today.

A: The IPA has the yellow-brown look of the trees we saw on the way home. A spectacular look. The growler opened with a hiss today but the carbonation on the glass is lackluster. Yesterday it was much more, over a finger on several pouts.

S: Crisply assertive hops, citrusy, ring out of the glass. Those hops are assertive but not numbing. Caramel supports nicely. Grapefruit and orange rind are prominent.

T: The hops jump out, resiny with plenty of citrus bite. Grapefruit and orange rind drive the flavor. When carbonated, the hops disappear quickly. This glass, much lower carbonation-wise, leaves the hops to linger. Very fresh, those hops pump out a great deal of flavor. To the ale's credit, it remains balanced, with biscuit and caramel evening things out without flair. A bit of peppery heat follows, as do more oily hops. That defines the finish.

M: A serious hop profile makes the ale zing. I was pleasantly surprised/reminded on my first sip from the growler. Possibly Gamble Mill's best offering.

On Tap from the new microbrewery at Gamble Mill

A - Clear copper orange color with about one finger white head. Decent retention and minimal lacing.

S - Strong pine resin nose with hint of grapefruit in the background. Light malt undertones.

T&M - A nice flavor combination of pine, grapefruit and citrus peel, and light floral undertones. Malt, and possibly some other hop variety, seem to add a nice earthiness to this medium bodied brew. Hop oils are on the lighter side with a piney finish.

D - At a bit shy of 7% ABV, this is a drinking man's IPA with nice flavor combos; not a palate shredder by any stretch, and paired well with the Ricotta Gnocchi I ordered.
