Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer was served a deep brown color, nearly black with a tiny tan head floating on the top of the surface. The head faded very fast, leaving only a light level of lacing behind.

Smell- The aroma of the beer is a mix of roasted malt and spices. The roast is dark and has hints of chocolate and coffee, with the mix of spices being heaviest of Christmas aromas, with hints of allspice cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

Taste – the taste begins with a roasted flavor with a more subtle spice flavor at first. The spices however soon get quite strong with flavors of nutmeg, allspice and ginger becoming quite potent. While the spices increase, subtle chocolate and coffee flavors comes to the tongue. In the end some light orange peel flavors mix with the rest to produce a quite spiced roast flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The carbonation of the brew was rather on the low side with a body that is on the thicker and creamier side. Both are quite nice for the spiced and roasted flavors of the brew.

Overall –A pretty decent brew with a nice blend of spice of roast.

On tap from the new microbrewery at Gamble Mill

A - Arrives at the table with virtually no head. Lacing is present, but minimal. Dark mahogany-brown pour.

S - Aroma is a little different from most stouts I encounter. This one is a tad spicier in the nose...more akin to a winter warmer then a stout, but with a solid malt backbone and a bit of earthiness more in tune with a stout.

T&M - Fuller bodied with a soft feel. There is a bountiful amount of spicing here, but nothing really stands out as predominant. I'm getting a little nutmeg, vanilla, ginger and some citrus. Higher hop content then typical, but not out of balance. Seems to be belgian yeast influence with some of the fruitier and sweet ester flavors. Very complex...lot's to keep you guessing what you're tasting. The carbonation seems a little light.

D - Lot's going on in the flavor department, with a reasonable ABV. I don't want to say that this one pushes the boundaries, but it is certainly on the fringe of a stout IMHO. Not entirely sure that it's interesting enough for me to come back for more.
