I love Good Beer- definitely my favorite bottle shop in manhattan. I live at 181st and regularly travel down to alphabet city to get my Citr Dog fix and to try new beers and find beers for food pairing. They have an incredible selection of American beers, particularly from the east coast, northeast areas and a good representation of Colorado and some west coast too. They also have a very nice selection of Belgian, German and Norwegian/Danish stuff. What's best about them is the fact they keep it ALL REFRIDGERATED!! I get so upset seeing great IPAs languish on display counters in whole foods it's such a relief to know you can get a fresh bottled IPA somewhere in the city.

They guys who run this place and work here are awesome, friendly dudes, and know a lot about what they're selling. The owner in particular has a vast knowledge and is very friendly (he's a thirty something with a beard and shaved head). If you're in need of something rare or just a good fresh beer, check this place out.

GF came across this place on Yelp when we were in NY this past week. We were looking for a bottle shop that carried legit east coast brews and Good Beer fit the bill perfectly. Good Beer also has 4-5 taps in the store so you can knock back a brew while shopping for more brews. You don't really see that in the west coast so I thought that was pretty cool. There's 2-3 small tables in the back with a small snack menu for those looking to get away from the loud and crowded brew pubs in Manhattan.

Great selection of bottles, good rotating taps and munchies at standard prices, knowledgeable owner. All-in-all, I definitely recommend anyone in the NYC area to come check this place out.

i think this was my favorite shop I visited. Down a few steps on a slightly quiter street but very close to Tompkins Sq park. simple clean place, larger line of coolers on one side, small shelf space and counter on the opposite.

Stopped here early on but after visiting quite a few other places and felt as if i could have saved my self the trouble and just stopped here. They had almost everything plus more that I had seen at the other places, great selection. Also they clearly put up by the register what new releases have come in, nice touch.

Have 6-8 taps for growler fills, pints or tasters. Allow you to do individual tasters (bonus).

Stopped in at least 3 times, very friendly staff. Have a few tables in the back. If I could only pick one bottle shop this would be it (neck and neck with Top Hops).

Only draw back is they close a little early, even on the weekends.

Vibe: This is a store that is more frequented by locals from the East Village as it's hidden in the basement level on a crosstown street between First Avenue and Avenue A. It's more of a store than a bar/eatery as there are only a few seats and tables.

Quality: Given the small size of this store, there is a high amount of turnover and beer is kept out of sunlight.

Service: The staff behind the counter is friendly and very knowledgeable about the beer selection.

Selection: Good Beer's selection isn't nearly as diverse as nearby Whole Foods Bowery or New Beer Distributors but is pretty good considering its small size. Most of the beers are available as singles in a long cooler that runs for the full length of one side of the store; about a quarter of the remaining bottles are stored warm, some of which are six packs. About a dozen beers are available on-tap for growler fills or drinking inside the store.

Food: I've never tried the food before but they have a couple of different types of snacks on the menu such as hot dogs, pretzels and sausages.

Value: Prices are rather reasonable for Manhattan and you will get a discount if you buy beers in quantity.

I like the vibe of this place, real laid back and located in the East Village somewhat off the beaten path. There is a bottle shop area along with some table for sitting and enjoying a beer - not too dark but not so well light as to have a negative effect on the beers for sale.

I have to admit that I have only purchased growlers to go and bottles/can so I have not drank any draft beers at the location. The beers that I have purchased have been fresh, correctly filled in the growler, and I have never had an issue with anything I purchased at this store. One of these days I am going to have the time to stop and have a beer when I'm in the area.

The staff at this store have always been helpful and chatty - letting me know what things are coming in soon and anything special that is going, including at other places in the East Village. They definitely know their beer and I have heard them give some really good recommendations for not as beer savvy customers.

The can and bottle selection is fairly extensive with quite a few beers that I do not see other places in NYC - they have a decent amount of the selection available cold as well. They usually have a decent range of styles on draft, so overall a pretty decent selection.

I'm not sure if they serve any food but I have never tried any if they do.

Prices are in line with other places in the East Village which in general is a little higher than some other locations in NYC.

Tough to review this, because unlike Top Hops, which I feel straddles the line between bar and bottle shop very well, Good Beer is very much tilted towards the bottle shop. And it is my favorite bottle shop in NYC.

Excellent selection of American craft, from year round offerings to limited releases. Limited releases are announced and handled well. International selection is perfect for me, large but not overwhelmingly so.

Service is great, the owner is super friendly and knowledgable.

I've not eaten here but the food looks excellent.

Pricing is in line with NYC pricing. Often some of the best prices on single 12 ozers.

My only issue, and in all honesty, it's probably what the owner intended, is that I wouldn't feel comfortable bringing a group of friends for a drink here, the atmosphere is very un-bar like. I only compare to Top Hops because they tow the line so well, IMO. That being said, I often will get a pint when I am shopping and browse or sit in the limited seating. I think it's very comfortable for that.

So overall, my favorite bottle shop in NYC, just not the place to actually come for extended sessions on premises.

If you weren't looking hard enough, you might miss the old-school wooden sign hung out front this garden level shop underneath an East Village brownstone. The store owner and the majority of the employees are very knowledgeable about all things craft beer. They don't just stock product because they can - they can actually offer good advice when it comes to most everything on the shelves. Their events are planned in advance and promoted via Facebook/Twitter and their own website which is much appreciated, but the store is small and can easily be overcrowded if something unusual or rare makes its way to the city (i.e. Bruery and DFH tastings with rarities).

It's a bit on the pricey side for everyday 4- and 6-packs, but are pretty much spot on for limited releases and rarities. They also do a great job alerting their customers of rare beers coming in as well as specific dates and times when they will be distributed. Beyond that, the everyday selections are what make this one of my go-to bottle shops in NYC.

Cozy and small craft beer store. People can come into this place and enjoy fresh tap or bottled beers in the back with seated area. Nice selection but didn't find anything good. However, they had Nugget Nectar on tap and thoroughly enjoyed that! Would stop by again next time I'm in NYC.

Had very limited free time on an all-too-short trip to NYC, so this was one of the few stops I was able to make.

Nice use of space in a typical East Village type of building. Long and slightly narrow. The selection could have had more rarities, but I have a feeling that the big stuff comes in and it isn't long before someone is hauling it out the door. What are there, 10 taps? I would have been happy to see some more rare stuff available, but they did have Radiant Pig's Junior IPA, and Peekskill's Eastern Standard IPA and Simple Sour available. Those are three super local beers that anyone should be at least trying, if not putting in their regular rotation.

Walked out of here with a lot of stuff and was pleased with my purchases.

This is pretty much what a craft beer store should look like. They have a high quality, comprehensive selection, so you should have no problem finding what you are looking for, or finding something new to try. I believe all or most of their bottles were made available on shelves and in the fridge too. The bottle prices were reasonable for NYC, especially considering the relative scarcity of good craft beer stores. The growler prices were reasonable, and as mentioned below, the selection is thoughtful and varied, and you can try a flight for 8 bucks. I didnt try the food, but thought it was a good idea to serve food, so patrons can spend some time with their flights and buy great beer at a relaxed pace. Definitely worth coming back.
