12.7 ounce bottle. Served in a Great Lakes Brewing chalice, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch and a half tan head that sticked around for a long time. There's also a lot of lacing. The brew smells like vanilla, brown sugar, bourbon, coffee, dark fruit, and chocolate. It tastes like vanilla, dark fruit, coffee, dark chocolate, bourbon, caramel, dark bread, roasted malt, and some earthy woodiness. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's slick and creamy with medium/high carbonation. I liked this brew, although it is pricey at $10.49 a bottle.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours pitch black with thin dark brown head that maintains a thin ring around the glass that still leaves moderate lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, grain alcohol, hints of char and coffee. Flavor of dry, lightly charred and toasted malt, high cocoa chocolate, light day old charred coffee, fresh cut wood, hints of nuts; finishes with a woody, non-herbal hop bitterness. Medium to heavy bodied. An interesting but quite dry take on an imperial stout. This is the first time I have tasted chocolate notes like those found in 90% cocoa chocolate bars; intense and dry and an aquired taste. The coffee flavors seem subsumed into charred malt taste, with little fresh coffee taste. The alcohol is well covered, unlike in the aroma, but there is little bourbon flavor associated with it either. An unusual and complex imerial stout, but one that may be a bit more dry and woody than I prefer. Certainly interesting enough that I would like to try the base stout, which was clearly a nice toasty, charred one.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter.

A- Pours a fully opaque reddish black color with a 1/2 inch light brown head that retains quite well before steadily making its way down to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a large center patch of surface foam. Not-so-resilient lacing leaves a thick bubbly ring behind.

S- Strong aroma of oak and dark roast and a considerable amount of booze fume.

T- The oak comes in assertively but not overly so since it makes for a nice accompaniment to the charry dark roast. The only problem is pretty much all I get is the barrel and the malt, though certainly smooth. Alcohol is decently concealed and there's a moderate hop bitterness. No coffee to speak of. Lots of oak in the aftertaste once a few back-to-back sips are taken.

M- Slightly creamy and slick with medium carbonation and the fullest of bodies.

O- Pretty drinkable for a barrel-aged beer but is certainly lacking in the alleged coffee presence. Also a bit one-sided as all I could sense was the wood (however lovely) and dark roasted malt.

Shared by my one of my best beer buddies some time back. Notes taken at the time and reviewed now.

A- Pitch black pour to a small chalice flute. Mocha brown head to a half finger and it falls pretty quickly to a frothy ring and some islands on top. Creamy bubbly ring leaves nice spots of lace.

S- Super 70% bitterness dark cocoa and dark cherries up front combine to make a dessert like feel. Dark roast grains but mostly just a ton do chocolate, tiniest oak hint.

T- Changes quite a bit from the nose but retains that main cocoa dominance. It seems like hops open up here with some piney and earthy flavors, red fruits and almost spicy dry fruits get pretty big as well as a toasted nutty oatmeal feel. Slight oak whiskey and peppery bourbon.

MF- Pretty dry and medium thickness with a lower to moderate carbonation. Fairly oily and somewhat silky, nice alcohol warming to finish it off.

Has a somewhat Belgian fruit feel with a massive unsweetened cocoa force. Bourbon barrels not too strong but overall quite a nice drink.

I was really excited to pop open this beer a few nights ago with a friend. I've realized I have quite a few beers in the cellar that need to be tasted so this was the second one of the night. As I popped the cap... rust. Underneath the cap. The very tip of the bottle underneath the cap was completed rusted. Still decided hey why not try it still, it could just be on the tip. Well fortunately the beer wasn't completed screwed but, it really wasn't all that great.

A - dark black with a little bit of head. Poured into a small snifter.

S - as expected, smells like a big bourbon beer. vanilla, coffee, alcohol, roasted malt.

T - lackluster. The bourbon was a little much, not enough of the rest of the flavors. It fell pretty flat compared to other beers in this style. I think this bottle may have been screwed from the beginning. Hoping to try it again.

375ml shared with Cam and Kim.

Black body, small brown head. Head is a thin ring and partial cap for most of the duration.

Smells like very dark, unsweetened chocolate fudge, some licorice, coffee, roast. Some light bourbon shows up with warmth. Not quite as intense as expected but the unique dark choc. is very good.

Taste brings on more bourbon and oak, chocolate, roast+coffee finish. Some dark fruits, hops, odd tartness and bitterness. A little jumbled overall with none of these flavors really going the extra mile, but good.

Feels kinda thin on the mouthfeel considering the style, a bit on the boozy side as well. Decent carbonation.

Pretty good overall, though disjointed-feeling. Felt a little weak after the nose. Would like to try the original sometime.
