Formerly "Jule Mælk".

In Denmark we are very fond of Christmas beers. In fact, most of December goes with drinking Christmas beers while chewing on fat duck, pork roast, red cabbage and herrings left in vinegar for months.

Jule Mælk. Our so far strongest beer, bumped up to 15% ABV and loaded and loaded and loaded with lactose, just until it couldn’t get any more heavy. You could say this is the Foie Gras force-feeding edition of a beer. But then again, it is Christmas after all…

Style: Imperial Sweet Stout
Malts: Pale, Special B, Melanoidin, Chocolate, Smoked, Dark Crystal, Roasted Barley, Cassonade Sugar, Lactose
Hops: Tettnanger, Tomohawk, Sorachi Ace

Obviously a unique and complex milk stout. Dig the fruity cherry - like tartness balanced in with the chocolatey stout characters. Really rich, creamy body, and how drinkable it is for the amount of abv works too. BUT... the sweetness!! Damn, the overly sweet kick you get right out the gate kinda kills it, and loses points with me personally.

Why isn't this beer better-rated? I guess it's not very orthodox for stout-lovers, but for a heretic like me, this was heaven.

The Yule Maelk pours dark with a thin brown head, which is usually a good sign for stouts as far as I'm concerned. A heady aroma of fruit and spice that promises booziness, and the flavor honors that contract. Some people don't seem to like that, but I love a boozy beer as long as the flavor is complimentary.

And the Yule Maelk fits that bill. The fruitiness reminds me of nothing so much as dates. This beer is as sweet as any I've tasted, but it wasn't cloying. That sweetness is counterbalanced by rich bass notes of dark chocolate, as well as the aforementioned alcohol. This is an expensive brew, but I consider it to be a Christmas present for my mouth. Merry Christmas, mouth!

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a small, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt and chocolate, with just a hint of coffee and licorice as well. Taste is a good balance of lightly roasted, quite caramelly malt, very light bitter and spicy hops, distinct milk chocolate, lactose and lighter dark fruit, with notes of raisin and figs, licorice and just a hint of leather. Finishes bittersweet, with a medium/strong sweetness, light bitterness and some caramel malt, chocolate, lactose and licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Full, thick mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.

While this is a bit too sweet and boozy for my personal taste, there is a good overall balance of sweet, bitter and slightly roasted and spicy notes to this, with some quite rich caramel malt, milk chocolate and lactose notes dominating and lighter dark fruit and licorice, while the lactose isn't quite overdone, thankfully. Overall this makes for a rather rich and boozy Imperial Milk Stout that is quite sweet without feeling cloying though, being kept in check nicely by some bitter, roasted and spicy accents, with a particularly great body and mouthfeel.

“Christmas milk”. Man a little on the expensive side at $10.99 a bottle but what do you expect for 15%? Pours off dark brown with head that looks like it’s been dipped in cinnamon and sugar. Aromas of chocolates, figs, dates, raisin, other dark fruits. Taste is very raisiny and like a date with heavy sugary taste on the tail end. Smooth going down. Creamy and rich. Very light effervescence and it almost drinks like a syrup. Heavy in lactose according to the description. Overall a delicious beer and doesn’t taste as high in alcohol as it is. Masks it quite well. My lips are sticky with sugars after sipping.

To Øl Jule Mælk Imperial Pastry Milk Stout, 15% ABV. Pours black with a four-finger brown head that left lots of foamy lacing. Nose is chocolate, lactose, and leather (belt, not shoe). Taste is quite sweet, tons of lactose, dark fruit, and chocolate. Strong liquorice in the aftertaste (alternate spelling). Outstanding mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Some wimps may find this too sweet. Dangerously void of alcohol taste, but the 15% kick is still there. This beer would have been world-class if it weren't for the liquorice/licorice taste, which killed it for me.

L: The darkest mahogany black brew with a forever dense head of tall espresso-milk froth. Left the widest band of foam at the tip top of the glass, and a lacy pattern below.

S:Dark roasted malts, hot cocoa, and a note of leather. This had that European dark ale vibe in the background which worked out rather nicely. Cherry liquor and licorice became more and more prominent as it warmed.

T: I was worried from other posts that this would be sickly sweet without balance, but I was pleasantly surprised.

F: Luscious silk and velvet sweetness, right carbonation and a real delicious sipper.

O: A fine evil Christmas milk or whatever they we’re going for. Well planned and equally well executed.

Recommended by the guy at my favorite bottle shop (the most important person for expanding my horizons). Very different to other stouts I typically enjoy. It is quite sweet but is well balanced and has very little alcohol burn for the ABV. The first tequila barrel aged beer I've tried and it works well. It is a beer to sit a savor on a cold(ish) evening. It will never be a go to style or beer for me but I enjoyed it very much.

16oz can. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a large, tan head of foam. It smelled of chocolate, cream and toffee. Sticky sweet with chocolate, toffee and creaminess.

A: The beer is absolutely jet black in color. It poured with a finger high frothy tan head that died down a bit but consistently left a short head covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of dark and chocolate malts and lactose are present in the nose along with hints of licorice.
T: The taste is very chocolatey and has strong notes of lactose with faint hints of licorice and spices as well as a light amount of bitterness. No alcohol is perceptible.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and very smooth and thick on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this to be a very unique beer that seems to be like a milk stout with notes of a Russian Imperial Stout. It is exceptionally drinkable considering its strength.
