Amber color with a thin head with short retention.
Very citrusy aroma with notes of lemon, oranges, mild pine and some mango.
Hoppy flavor with notes of pine, lager yeast, lemon, mango, papaya, grass, perfume and spicy tobacco. Dry and relatively bitter aftertaste.
Light body with appropriate carbonation.
Crispy and hoppy Pils, super sessionable as proposed. It mixes traditional noble hops characteristics with new world.

BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Unbranded white pry-off crown cap. Simple elegant white label with green text. Best before: 13/05/16. Purchased at a Prisma hypermarket for ~3 euro.

4.50% ABV. Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are above average on account of the brewery.

HEAD: ~4 inches wide. Off-white colour. Nice thickness and creaminess. Fair frothiness. Great (~6-8 minute) retention.

BODY: Translucent transparent albeit murky copper colour. Not the clean appearance you'd want in a good pilsner. Needs more filtration and/or decoction.

Looks decent for a pilsner. I can't say it's unique or special.

AROMA: It's definitely hop-forward, but importantly it doesn't seem imbalanced; the hop bitterness isn't noticeable. Hop character is deep and varied, with notes of floral hops, grassy hops and even herbal hops. Hints of vague tropical fruit on the periphery. Malt base seems more pale than pilsner, though that could just be my incompetence...

Aromatic intensity is average. A remarkably deep aroma for a pilsner, but I hope the balance in the taste holds up to the promises of the aroma. The fruity notes are the standout.

TASTE: The hoppy notes from the aroma all manifest in the taste, to the extent that I'd be completely unable to discern that this wasn't a pale lager in a blind tasting. The malt backbone seems more pale malt-y than pilsner malt-y, and the fruitiness of the hops eclipses the usual grassiness you'd find in a Saaz or Noble hopped pilsner (i.e. 99% of pilsners).

Balanced, with notable complexity for a pilsner. I'm impressed with how well they executed this premise, but the fundamentals of a good pilsner kind of get lost in the process. Lacks the subtlety and nuance of the best Czech pilsners, but compensates with substantially more complexity than you'd normally find in the style.

Well-built, with a cohesive structure and flavour profile.

TEXTURE: More medium-bodied than would be ideal. Smooth, wet, and somewhat refreshing. Most pilsners are lighter, crisper, and more refreshing. Overcarbonation is only slight.

This mouthfeel complements the taste nicely, but doesn't accentuate specific notes or elevate the beer as a whole.

OVERALL: Highly drinkable and enjoyable. The brewery took a big risk and it paid off; I'd definitely recommend trying this. A sessionable brew with an intriguing hop profile and notable balance, Hop Love Pils is completely untraditional - and definitely worth trying if you chance across it.

A really great ale. Low on the alcohol but plenty of taste and lots of hops. A great hybrid between IPA and lager

Bottled beer served in a pint glass.

Appearance -
Cloudy orange in colour and a precipitation swirl is visible in the glass. Forms a thick head that dissipates to a thin foam after a few minutes. The lacing paints the walls of the glass. Little effervescence can be observed.

Smell -
A strong aroma like any good beer. Lots of hops, pepper, tobacco, citrus and eucalyptus leaves. Expecting a lot of flavour out of this one.

Taste-
Fresh hops, mild bitterness and soda water body with lemon peel, leafy and earthy tones. Typical of the pilsner style and a fine example of one.

Mouthfeel-
A creamy, medium body which is crisp and refreshing on the way down. Leaves plenty of lacing on the walls of my mouth. Very mild effervescence as evident from the appearance.

Overall -
A strong example of a pilsner, with the earthy, hoppy flavour being centre stage. The bitterness is nicely balanced making for a refreshing, thist quenching beer which would go well on a hot summer's day.

330ml brown bottle purchased from Leura Cellars. Freshness date on the top says 08/01/16. I'm sincerely doubtful it would last that long, but the fact that the date is so far in the future gives me confident it's quite fresh right now.

Pours a deepish golden colour, quite clear, with a big, frothy, eggy head that stays persistent and rocky throughout. Lacing is intricate and excellent. Light body. The colour is a little darker than I'd expect, but otherwise it looks excellent.

Nose has very crisp green hop characters, vegetative and sharp. I get some kiwifruit, a little grassiness, tending towards something a little metallic or even skunky, which aromatically can genuinely be a pleasant character in a pils. Very clean otherwise, bright and very pleasant.

Taste is great. Clean entry, with a sharp hop character that stays bright through the front and middle of the palate. Just a hint of nuttiness towards the back, which is pleasant, if unnecessary—with the bitterness on the back it lends a slight tobacco note to the palate. Feel is beautifully crisp and clean, with a sharpness to the carbonation that helps accentuate the refreshing quality of the beer.

Overall, this is a genuinely cracking pilsner. Hops are front-and-centre, but used absolutely in the way they should in a pilsner—this is neither a dull pale lager, nor is it a beer that could easily be confused for a hoppy pale ale. It's all crisp and bright, clean and refreshing—phenomenally drinkable.
