12.7 fl oz green glass (ugh...) bottle with black foil-ed over unbranded black pry-off pressure cap and straightforward label acquired at my local bottle shop and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given its current 93 rating. Brewed at De Proef. Imported by the Shelton Bastards. Reviewed as an imperial stout because the description on the label identifies it as such. 10.1% ABV confirmed.

Served cold - straight from the fridge - and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of gorgeous tan colour. Good creaminess and thickness. Has a nice supple complexion and a smooth even consistency. Nice even lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Head retention is pretty good for the high ABV - about 4 minutes.

Body colour is an opaque solid black. Appears adequately carbonated. No yeast particles/sediment is visible. I'd guess it was filtered.

Overall, it's well within style conventions and looks pretty good. Not a unique or special appearance, but I'm looking forward to the first sip. There are no obvious flaws.

Sm: Has a nice coffee aroma, though it isn't real roasty and doesn't have a whole lot of depth. The coffee character works well with the cream and really develops as the beer comes to temperature. Dark malts. Chocolate malts. A hint of burnt sugars/ash/char. Chocolate syrup.

Coffee steals the show. I'm looking forward to trying it.

No hop character, yeast character, or overt alcohol is detectable.

A pleasant aroma of above average strength. Not the intimidating beast you might expect at 10.1% ABV.

T: Has some nice coffee notes - though the depth of flavour is quite limited. Some hints of chocolate syrup. Chocolate malts. Dark malts. Subtle creaminess. I don't find any roasted barley or coffee roast, much to the beer's detriment. Marshmallow.

I find it a bit too sweet overall. It's not that well balanced, but it does have a definite cohesion. It's not a gestalt build, and it's not very subtle, complex, intricate, or nuanced (especially for a beer in this style) but I like it generally. Below average depth and intensity of flavour. Average duration of flavour.

No hop profile is noticeable. I don't find any yeast character. There's some minimal alcohol warmth.

Mf: Sticky, syrupy, and a bit too thick. It's actually a bit too coarse and dry, which lends it an unbecoming rough feel on the palate. Has plenty of weight and body. Overall, the texture doesn't suit the taste particularly well.

Not oily, astringent, gushed, hot, boozy, or harsh.

Dr: Drinkable, sure, but the 10.1% is still noticeable. It's a sipper, but mostly because of the troublesome mouthfeel. I do like it, but I wouldn't get it again (in large part due to the Shelton Bastards' unreasonable price point). Not To Ol's strongest work, and far from a great coffee stout. I hoped for better.

High C+

This was absolutely fantastic. My expectations were high, and it surpassed them in grand form.

Poured this one in a Jester King glass and the appearance was jet black with a small mocha head.

The nose was very nice with mostly cocoa and roasted coffee taking front seat.

Wow. The taste was truly amazing. It started with a sweet toffee and chocolate, but before becoming too sweet, the roasted coffee flavors appeared to bring a very nice balance. The finish was a sweet roasted mocha that lingered with a hint of bitterness.

The mouth feel was on the thicker side, but still allowed for a slick coating which really made for a creamy, silk feel. Carbonation was moderate.

Overall, the balance of this beer was very impressive. Everything hit on all cylinders and was truly one of the best beers I've tasted. I will definitely be buying this again.

Truly amazing beer. By far the best Imperial Stout I've tasted. Gonna get me another bottle for aging. Goliat was a mighty warrior (defeated, but still), and this is a mighty beer.

Appearance: before opening the bottle I was almost certain it was painted black. Really, even the texture of the glass seemed like painted. Beer itself is pitch black with a thick tan / dark tan head. Great lacing.

Aroma: dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts and some nice alcohol notes in the back. A perfect combination considering the time of year.

Taste: coffee and roasted malts with the first few sips, later comes dark chocolate with alcohol again. Flavours are intense and "in your face", except the alcohol notes, those are still very pleasant and warming, but doesn't feel like a 10,1% ABV.

Mouthfeel: very low carbonation, but not flat. Medium to full bodied.

Overall: Outstanding Imperial Stout, a beer you have to try.

Got this one at the De Molen beer shop in Bodegraven.

From a 37,5cl bottle into a snifter
Best Before 10 January 2017

APPEARANCE: A dark brown pour yields a 1+ finger, thinner looking, bubbly, dark tan head with good retention. Black body with lower levels of carbonation evident. Head fades to a bubbly wisp and clings to the sides of the glass a bit. A ring remains until the end and leaves a few dot of falling lace down the glass.

SMELL: A big nose of roasted grain, dark chocolate, coffee, sweet cream and caramel. Some oats as well. Big oatmeal stout nose.

TASTE: Roasted notes, coffee and oats up front. Lots of flavor for sure. Big finish of roasted grain, roasted coffee beans, oats, sweet cream and bitter dark chocolate. Good oats and roasted bitterness here, with coffee and dark chocolate rounding it out. Nice.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, enough weight, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Enough heft and very creamy as well.

OVERALL: This is really good. Oats on top of a good roasted base, with lots of nice chocolate and coffee flavor and a good feel to boot. Sort Maelk was perhaps more impressive, but so far, I've been very happy with these guys and their stout beer. Well worth checking out. Recommended.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a rather large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of medium sweet chocolates notes with light roasted malt notes. Taste is also dominated some black chocolates notes with light roasted malt, light coffee notes with light residual sugars. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no clear apparent alcohol. Enjoyable but a bit short in terms of complexity.

Bottle poured into a Duvel tulip. Nice 3 finger dark mocha head that has good retention and a decent bit of lacing for the abv. Dark black body with no light penetration.

Solid aroma for an Imperial Stout. Starts off with dark fruit, and as it warms, chocolate and a small amount of coffee.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, but the sweet, chocolate flavor is more dominant. The roasted malt flavor comes through and combines with light nut flavor, coffee, and raisin/dates. Pretty good blend of flavors overall.

Thick texture in the mouthfeel and very little notice of the alcohol. Will use the world "solid" again to describe this one overall. Hard category to compete in for scores, but I did enjoy it.
