Appearance - It pours a deep orange/ light brown color with light head retention.

Aroma- Interesting earthy hops aromas, pine, citrus and the added roasted coffee notes really make it unique.

Taste- The taste is like somebody hopped the hell out of my coffee. It has some real nice bitterness, a little bit of sweetness up front and some umami.

Mouthfeel- It is medium to full bodied and has some warmth to it as well from the high ABV.

Overall- Very good and interesting beer. It’s more like a black IPA than a regular but a beer this unique couldn’t fit neatly into any category.

Done in a horizontal tasting with Koppi Coffee IPA from Mikkeller and Bed and Breakfast from Brouwerij De Molen.

Eye: Starts off with a nice creamy one finger head that eventually falls down to a sheet over the beer. Lacing looks nice as well. Color is pretty much the same as the Mikkeller Koppi Coffee IPA, murky tan/light brown.

Nose: Strong blend of hops and coffee in the aroma here. Earthy hops take the lead and coffee struggles to get through but is there in the background creating an interesting backdrop.

Tongue: Less intense coffee flavor in this one, hops are the much more dominant flavor. The aroma suggests that they'd be nicely balanced but Mikkeller's Koppi Coffee IPA is a much more what I expected from an IPA with coffee in it. Unlike the Mikkeller, this one gets bitterness from hops, very little coffee flavor making its way through, its much more subdued. Pretty green hop flavor, real fresh, real earthy. Alcohol is detectable. Coffee flavor is there, but it supports the hops instead of; like the Mikkeller, taking the stage from the hops and then bringing them back for an encore performed together. This beer has more depth of flavor and isn't as single minded. The more I drink of it the better I like it, its a completely different beast, more complex. Medium body with appropriate levels of carbonation. Definitely an IIPA though.

Drinkability: This one is definitely worth checking out. Different than the Mikkeller because it isn't as single minded and its much more complex. Two very different beers here, can't really choose a favorite because they are so different. Both are better than the Bed and Breakfast though. Depending on what I want I'd have to say go for this one over the Mikkeller just because its a little more complex, but if I want something straight forward and single minded then I'd go for the Mikkeller.

11.2 ounce bottle - $5.99 at Lucky's in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a clouded, dark orange body with a sea foam spray-type, lightly yellowed head.

Smell: Resinous, citrus oils commingled with wafting, stinging alcohol and brewed (and subsequently chilled) coffee ahead of the sweetish malt notes failing to make much of an impression.

Taste: A toffee and caramel syrup maltiness with a quick pop of sugary sweetness. This upfront sweetness is swiftly knocked aside by a full rush of pithy citrus, resinous hops and a bold bitterness, as well as the coffee flavor and peppery, punchy alcohol qualities. Drying, bitter finish that's a bit hot. Lingering astringency and alcoholic harshness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: I didn't really like it. Not that I have a beef with the concept, as I quite enjoyed BHB's recent Wrong Em Boyo. Now c'mere and give me a hug!

Appearance is a nice orangey-deep tan body with full cream colored head that smells great and has decent retention. Aroma is of floral hoppiness and light sweet coffee, I also get some caramel type sweetness. The taste hides the 10.5% extremely well. I had to look at the bottle again to check the ABV. Again with the caramel/coffee sweetness alongside the great malt balance, and great earthy/floral hop character. Mouthfeel is creamier than most IPAs and it doesn't dance on the tongue like IPAs do. I was worried about this beer being out of date, and I almost cellared this for a year to push it towards a coffee barley wine. The bottle top had a date of 8-2-14, which is over a year away, so I doubt that's a best by date. Anywho, my first Mikkeller offering and I wasn't disappointed. Not a stellar as the Dayman coffee IPA, but still extremely enjoyable. I look forward to coffee IPAs being a standard.

A - Hazy amber-brown with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades fairly slowly.

S - Sweet caramel malts, grapefruit, citrus, and pine hops, roasted coffee, brown sugar, and some booze.

T - Sweet caramel malts, grapefruit, citrus, and pine hops, some resiny bitterness, roasted coffee, brown sugar, and some booze.

M - Medium-plus bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with a bitter, sweet, warming finish.

D - Nice balance, could have had a bit more punch.

12oz bottle poured into a To Øl Teku glass.

The beer pours a super murky brown caramel color, hues of burgundy and tan with a bone colored head, very billowy and soft, nearly 2 fingers high that has nice retention and leaves behind a massive web of lace. The aroma is heavy on fruit forward coffee, citrus hop with a touch of pine and sweet, rich caramel malt with just a touch of subtle roast. On the tongue, the coffee is integrated so nicely with the fruity hops, nice roast, pine, citrus and rich malt that is balanced well and transitions very nicely from coffee roast, to fruity hop to smooth malt. The body is nice, very lively, with crisp carbonation that dances on the tongue nicely with a nice dry finish.

Verdict: A very unusual beer, but quite successful in it's mission to blend coffee and hops. The beans used perfectly compliments the hop profile and aren't overly harsh or roasty, but rather smooth and highlight the fruit flavors in both the beans and the hops.

Very complex, amazing beer. On first smell I thought sawdust that turned into espresso... a dusty espresso? The color is a light caramel that caught me off-guard, being that it’s an espresso beer. I really loved this beer, it reminded me of reading a really old book (in the smell) and sipping an espresso. The flavor of the beer hung-out with you for a while, but flavors got more complex the longer it hung out in the back of your mouth. I noticed some notes of dried plum through the complex flavors. The body and mouth feel were perfectly matched with the flavor tones. This beer felt like an 8.6% to me. Loved this beer!
