Had on tap at Monk's Cafe.

A - Pretty dark at the back bar, but seemed like a dark orange. Little bit of head. Better than average appearance, but nothing too special.

S - My favorite part of the beer. Get some hop aromas, but I can't recall specific hop qualities due to the yeast strain. Made it nice and funky. I believe citrus was the main hop component. Definitely a strong malt component.

T - Way too bready. So much malt it detracts from the awesome yeast strain and mutes the hops. I feel like this could be really delicious if they lowered the malt presence and let the hops interact with the yeast more at the forefront.

M - Really smooth, just a hint of booze. Well done mouthfeel.

O - Disappointing considering the awesome expectations I had since I love DIPAs and I really enjoy Orval. If you enjoy bready DIPAs and Orval you'd probably enjoy it a lot.

A murky,opaque brown contrasts with a well-trimmed, polished-white, two-fingers of foam. It looks menacingly attractive. The smell is like WTF-deep hops with an herb bouquet of old strong-man ale. It's like a cologne...I've always been a little conflicted about say the smell of Brut on a carpenter....

Hops are there, but what is that WTF-bit of pungent lemon rind with a bitter orange peel feel attached to it? Definitely medicinally bitter. Oddly characteristic of a DFH 120?!? Subsequent smells give me a Nelson Sauvignon hop/grape smell, and there's a Chardonnay-style dryness here from the Belgian yeast. One of the rarities that sorta feels better than it tastes: the alcohol is warming and mouth-pooling provides a bitter numbing reminiscent of liquid xylocaine! It's tough while sophisticated: a beer a girl wants to fuck. Mikkeller does so much; it's mostly so good; this is yet another neat and powerful production from toolbrew.com!

Lemony tart funky barnyard nose with some fruit notes over bready malt
Pours hazy amber under a rich, moussey 2" light tan tinted foam cap that slowly descends to a thick film. lacy.
Palate: Has the gold, rich Imperial/Double IPA malt and the big Belgian style wild yeasts – tastes mostly like lacto with the Brett just starting up. The hops are not big for an Imperial IPA but they are big fro a Belgian and they provide an interesting bitter accent on the end that balances the lemony tartness Some butter-toffee notes in the background.
A rich finely bubbled soft carbonation only possible with wild yeasts and bacterial supports a lusciously creamy medium body. A big, bold, tart and refreshing beer.

To Øl is danish for two bothers (which is a sick name btw), and was induced from conversations with Mikkeller (note this is not a Mikkeler beer, as I thought it was - the similar packaging and mikkeller imprint distracted me). Ov-Ral is the breweries first release (co-brewed with Mikkeller).

Like Mikkeller and Evil Twin, To Øl is a gypsy brewery. Ov-Ral was brewed at De Proef Brouwerli, Belgium, and is appropriately a Belgium IPA of high quality. The nose is strong malt and the taste is complex but resinous sweet in flavor.

Overall, this beer is excellent, though at $6.0, I could opt for a cheaper DIIPA with similar flavors (sixpoint's resin). Should I want strong malt character and complex flavors with strong body, I would consult Ov-Ral.

Quite a bit of fluffy long lasting head. Orangish in color.

Pretty hoppy nose. Cirtus fruits and pine.

Lot's of barnyard flavors. Hay straw and horseblanket. Lot's of hop flavor too.
All Brett and funk no sourness. Quite a bit of heat from the high ABV. A bit of candish finish too.

This was a real good beer. Exactly what I am looking for. Almost like a an Orval on steroids or an imperial heavily hopped Orval. A real style busting beer.

Highly recomended for those who like the funk.

Picked this up at the COOP last night... Paid $5ish. Pours with a 2 finger meringue like head... thick and foamy looks like shaving cream... the brew is hazed orange... beautiful sheets of lace for the entire glass.

Nose is very interesting... hoppy and phenolic.... some mild yet wild plastic notes... something that reminds me of apricots... and spicy coriander.

Candied grapefruit zest on the palate... dry dusty basement and somehow still something that seems to be sweetness, but I know this is bone dry... Hops (I think so) are sorta resinous piney notes.

Body is fairly big... even with the bigger carbonation the mouthfeel is still surprisingly creamy.

Pretty interesting beer... I would like to see some American breweries give this a try so I could hopefully try it a lot fresher.... Still a pretty cool experiment.

On-tap at Beer Street, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is crystal clear amber in color and has a slight amount of visible carbonation. It poured with delicate lacing on the surface that eventually completely faded away and left a thin ring around the edge of the glass.
S: There are aromas of caramel malts in the nose along with some hints of citrusy hops; the smell becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of caramel hops, a moderate to strong amount of bitterness and a slight amount of sourness. Some citrusy flavors become apparent as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation and a bit of alcohol warming.
O: This is a very solid Double IPA. It feels strong but the alcohol is mostly well masked from the taste.

330ml bottle. ½ Pint glass. Enjoyed on jul´12. Bright orangish amber color. Crystal clear appearance. White in color, close froth. Crown shows good retention & leaves a thin layer on top. Smelling is such an hallucination that takes you into a farm: horsestable, barnyard, leather, fermented cheese & intense burnt bacon. Helpfully underlying crystal & caramel malt aromas brings us back in front of a beer. Refreshing at first sip. Sweet toasted malt, subtle increasing hoppiness & brett flavors. Medium body. Soft to moderate carbonation. Oily texture & gentle bitterness. Long finish shows roasted bacon & smoky notes. ABV is well hidden in mouth but your head will feel it up. Probably the most complex beer I´ve ever tried.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Clear amber-orange pour with a one finger head with decent retention and nice lacing. Initially the nose is perfumey, citrusy, and tropical. But early on the wild yeast and brett really take over. The same is true with the taste. Lots of pine, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, and caramel, fighting for supremacy over a solid level of yeasty, spicy funkiness. There's also a battle of subtle sweetness trying to overpower a dry and earthy farmhouse character. Very complex and very unique! The mouthfeel is oily and syrupy with a mouth puckering bitter hop bite. The finish is tangy and funky with gentle warming from the alcohol. I had no idea what this was when I bought it, but I'm glad I did. I typically don't like funky beers whatsoever, but this one really stands out. Truly one of a kind. Highly recommend!

Wow, very good beer. It has been a while since I've had something like this and I was not diasappointed. Definitely some beautiful piney hoppines with a significant caramel malt. Some underlying citrus fruitiness. Good head on pour, great color, great nose, smoothe.

Thanks to Golden Crust for having it in the bottle shop.

Served on tap at Beer Street Brooklyn in New York, NY

A: Pours a very lightly hazy amber in color with heavy amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a finger tall light tan head that reduces to a thick ring at the edges of the glass and a moderately thick film covering the entire surface of the beer. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: There is a slightly sweet aromas to this beer from the caramel malts and some fruitiness - there is also a tropical hop presence and some light amounts of spice.

T: Moderate amounts of caramel malts in the body with quite a bit of hops present as well - I detected notes of tropical fruit and slight spiciness from the yeast.

M: On the heavier side of medium bodied with a heavy amount of carbonation. Sharp/crisp.

O: Very enjoyable though a little too strong to really be an easy drinking beer (and definitely not a session beer). Nice interpretation of a classic Belgian beer with a slight twist to it. Alcohol is extremely well hidden.

First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA

Served in a stem glass, a hazy reddish-amber color with a small, dense cap of off-white head. This was listed as an imperial IPA at the bar, but Belgian IPA makes much more sense for this tribute to Orval. I went in expected a typical IIPA, but was given a bit of surprise. No nostril-burning hops on the nose, but more fruit esters and Belgian yeast, closer to a dubbel or Belgian ale (aka Orval). Taste was bready and yeasty, almost in sour territory, with flavors of cherry and red wine coming through, a bit of citrus, leather, grassy funk, with herbal and earthy hops almost as an afterthought. Definitely not what I expected, but still very tasty. Medium body, chewy but smooth, alcohol taste definitely hidden well, but the burn was felt a bit. Good one.

Pours golden amber with orangeish tint capped by a finger of beige head creating short-lived
lacing on the sides.

Aroma reveals sour notes and funk with barnyard character while hops advertised on the label remain completely pushed into the background, apart from some apricot & mild orange-like fruitiness. A touch of caramel&biscuity malt adds to complexity and enhances the fruity aspects.

When it comes to the flavor the expected apricot, citrus, sweet orange-like and woodsy-piney
character contributed by mix of Simcoe, Centennial and Amarillo hops is far more evident than
the nose suggested. The supposed brett characteristics i.e. pie cherry, mushroom-like bitterness and tartness are entirely overshadowed by hops. The palate is surprisingly sweet - I'd expect the brettanomyces to ferment most of the remaining sugars - yet the brett-action still provides high carbonation and slightly tart, quite dry finish. However, as stated before the overall palate remains on the sweet side probably on account of unfermentable sugars in caramel or similar malt.

Quite airy and mouth filling with creamy sensation yielded by oats used.

In short, a bit schizophrenous brew with aroma of significantly different nature than flavor. Yet, it's a fantastic Orval clone, a merger of Gueuze and IIPA qualities worth seeking out (330 ml, best by 04-05-2014, into tulip).

A: Poured from a bottle to a goblet. Had an amber color and a hazy consistency. There was a massive, foamy long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: An extremely sweet and enticing aroma of light fruit, hops and yeast.

T: Tasted of hops (an average amount), light, tropical fruit, malt, and a decent shot of yeast. A very straightforward, light, tasty flavor. Booze isn't very evident, even at 10.5%.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a sharp, almost harsh finish. Medium-bodied.

O: A well done, drinkable Belgian IPA that's very drinkable.

I had this on tap at Alewife, in LIC, NY.

The beer comes in a hazy ruby grapefruit color.

The aroma has huge perfumey floral hop aroma, citrus, tropical fruit, and some Brett.

The flavor has big caramel malt right in the front and then it becomes pine, resin, and citrus. It then finishes with a very spicy flavor. It's almost like there is rye in the malt bill. I don't get too much definition in this because of the fruity hops and the spicy malt.

This beer truly blew me away. Quite sweet from the malt, but tons of hops and interesting hints of funk. It does remind me slightly of Orval, but this is as what it is, a huge Double IPA.

One of those beers that stands out as super interesting for me. If it means anything, I was at a bar that had Heady Topper cans and I ordered this instead after trying a sip from my friend's. Then again, I have two cans in my fridge...

Without understanding how to pronounce the combination of letters and symbols in the beer's name or beer, I probably sound more like a mechanic than a beer reviewer saying "tool overhaul", but enough about symatics- this beer is what's worth discussing.

Hazy orange with underlying rusty hues, the beer gives dense impressions to the eye. The creamy ale slowly releases a dainty layer of capped foam. Off white and short statured, the beer defiantly retains well and speckles the glass with lace. Many of the newer Scandinavian microbrewed beers carry this unfiltered yeasty haze, so I'm expecting it's full flavor and textures to come with it.

Strong phenolic character shapes first impressions with an almost-sour and pungent scent of dried limes, plastic, and sharp peppercorn. Underneath the earthy brine lies the unmistakable fruitiness of Belgian-esque esters that give impressions of apples, oranges, apricots, and a mix of berries. Hunting for the hop aromatics are a bit tougher then usual for the larger-than-life IPA because the hop varieties are fruity and tropical and only offer the slightest whiff of grass or pine. It all blends into the esters and spicy character remarkably well.

I'm taken back by the beer's flavor because the spices and earthen pungencies are all down played and the fusion of malt, hops, and esters steal the show. Candied flavors of marmalade, honey, and thinly sweet caramel sooth the mouth with sly sweetness. Not to be outdone, the counterparts of hops arrive with citrusy and tropical notes that vary between ruby red grapefruit, pineapple, mangoes, papaya, apricots- all in a bitter Fruit Rollup kinda way. The malt and hop complexities are further bridged with the berry-like twang, apple, spiced pear, and peach flavor from yeast esters... The beer's melange crosses the palate with a Hawaiian Fruit Punch taste that's meant for hop heads!

Full bodied from the sound of the gun until the finish line, the beer doesn't play around with lightness or finesse. It's full malt textures keep the beer rounded and balanced as the fruit and alcohol penetrate the mouth's surfaces with no appologies. A late finish of resiny dryness, semi-dry development, and alcohol warmth- the beer shows no signs of letting up as the taste lingers well into the next sip.

Ov-ral is a talented and complex taste without confussion. Only its briny earthen aroma provides slight distraction in aroma. Other than that, the taste of the beer is highly unique and delicious. I don't think I can sing its praises higher.

AROMA/SCENT - Sweet, piney, hops.

TASTE - Well-balanced. Sweet, piney, hops. ABV well-hidden.


MOUTHFEEL/PALATE/TEXTURE - Not gooey. Reasonable carbonation.

VALUE - A bit high.

OVERALL/DRINKABILITY - Excellent mix of Imperial IPA and Belgian themes. Quaffable.

Bright tangerine with thin off white film.
Sour Brett hairspray fusels with loads of citrus and barnyard and oil - a crazy, fascinating bouquet.
Apricot, bread, tangerine and resin hops.
Sour malt vinegar and orange jam finish and long, catty linger. Medium, fine fizz, clingy, hot.

Sour orange brandy? Honeyed cider vinegar? I struggle to come up with comparisons to suggest how weird and wonderful this beer is. The orange oil and musk nose is something I want to dab behind my ears. Piles of oily hops balance anything I don't like about Brett. Simcoe is there in the cattiness (Amarillo and Centennial, too.) And this was with some time on the bottle.

An inspired, unhinged beer.

Didn't realize what the ABV was when I bought this.

Pours a mild golden amber with a thin head into my glass. Colors are middle of road but with IPAs, it's all about flavor.

Spicy, funky and not quite what I was expecting. Hops upstaged by funk? What the?

My suspicions were correct. Tart, funky, spicy with just a touch of buttery malt and hops. The lack of hop prowess proves the accuracy of the style on the label (imperial american pale ale), even if the concept is absurd.

Lingering funk and spice dominate the mouthfeel along with alcohol warmth. Funk-y aftertaste too.

An interesting take on the style. Not sure that I'd buy it again but it's always good to experiment, no?

Pours a cloudy amber-orange color; yeast floaters; thick, white head. Hoppy aroma; citrus; orange and grapefruit; pine resin. Strong, boozy flavors; hints of orange; light caramel malts; phenolic. Medium body; semi-dry.

A big, boozy beer that goes over-the-top with alcohol and phenol flavors. Too much of a band-aid-like flavor to really enjoy this one.

Got this one at Geers in Ghent. I wish I had bought more. This is a collaboration DIPA with Mikkeller and is brewed with brett.

From a bottle into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a medium sized, thicker looking, bright white head with good retention. Slightly hazy gamboge orange in body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a half wisp and ring that remain until the end of the glass but leave no real lacing. Good looking.

SMELL: Pale malts, floral hops, grapefruit and some definite brett notes. Bolder nose and very well balanced and unique. Good stuff.

TASTE: Pale malts, melon and piney hop notes. Some decent brett tartness there and a bit of alcohol spice at the swallow. Bold but somewhat dry aftertaste of piney hop bitterness, brett tartness and spicy alcohol. Very balanced and flavorful. Just cool.

PALATE: Medium-full body, oily, and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly dry. A hint of alcohol lingers.

OVERALL: This was really, really good. A very unique take on the style, and the brett was extremely well integrated. I wish I had bought more of this stuff when I had the chance. A beer definitely worth checking out if you have the opportunity. Highly recommended.

Appearance: Ov-ral is a great looking IIPA - the body is lightly hazed and deep peachy orange in colour. A rough pour yields a massive off white head that displays great retention and leaves thick rings of lace as it slowly recedes.

Smell: I know this is not the freshest bottle, but I did not expect the brett to dominate the hops so much! The initial nose is almost all brett with musty notes and a distinct horse character. After a few minutes, some of the other notes begin to become apparent, these include: overripe/rotting peaches, sweet orange, tinned pineapple, orange peel and a little grapefruit. Sweet alcohol is quite well noted and seems to clash with the horsey brett.

Taste: The flavour is quite a bit better than the nose, there is not quite as much alcohol and hence the brett is much more pleasant. Notes include: Sweet caramel, honey, tinned pineapple, tangerine, overripe peaches, a light herbal note, musty basement, old hay and again distinct horsey notes.
The bitterness is very restrained and the finish is very dry.

Mouthfeel: Medium (or just over) bodied and quite oily, with a medium level of smooth carbonation.

Overall: An interesting experiment, but there is something about the combination of sweet alcohol and brett in the nose that doesn't seem to quite work. I would try this again if it was either a super fresh bottle.

Pours medium amber with a cream fizzy head. Some lace.

Funny nose. Tart notes, barnyard, fruit, and big tacky hop oil.

Hop forward, with tons of resinous notes, caramel, fruit, some barnyard and spice. Fruit is a bit tropical, and the hops are not fond of retaining a level of bitterness. Finishes with a malty and resinous note.

Medium full bodied, nice carbonation.

Nice one to try. Different and adventurous in the mix of style. Loved the nose and the aggressive restraint of the happiness.
