375ml poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy maroon color with a thick beige head. Good retention as a thin cap and thick ring, bits of lace left.

Smell - Dark caramel, toffee malts, raisin, some chocolate; light citrus hoppage and some alcohol come out more with warmth. Good, okay strength.

Taste - Pretty nice and balanced, not overly sweet or hoppy whatsoever. Dark caramel/molasses/dark fruit/chocolate malt combo. A little more hop presence (citrus/pine) than the scent but still on the lighter side. Not too much alcohol here either.

Mouthfeel - Great mouthfeel, hefty but well-carbonated, nicely hidden alcohol for 12.5%, hop bitterness at a nice level.

Overall - Kind of a run-of-the-mill barleywine flavor-wise, but definitely solid and way more drinkable and balanced than expected. Drank it solo without much trouble.

Bottle poured into a large snifter. Deep hazy amber brown with about an inch and a half of cream-tan head. Head held well and formed a nice thin layer on top and a hick collar. Phenomenal lacing. Aroma is really toasty/bready, some good sweet caramel, and earthy/woody hop. Taste is somehow inverted from the aroma, British hops, caramel and then the toast at the end; but the aftertaste turns back into the caramel sweetness. Good body: medium to almost full. Medium-low carbonation.

375 ml bottle. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours an orange/brown color with about an inch light tan head that sticks around a little while. There's also a decent amount of lacing. The brew smells like caramel malt, brown sugar, candied/dried fruit, and some light citrusy and grassy hops. The taste is similar to the aroma, it tastes like caramel malt, brown sugar, candied fruit, grapes, toffee, and a bit of grassy hops. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a little syrupy with moderate carbonation. I think this is a good brew, I liked it. It's pricey at $10.99 a bottle, but still worth a try at that price.

Copper-colored body, very thick, creamy, light tan head; some yeast sediment bouncing around with the carbonation. Malt and molasses nose; caramel; faint esters. Bold caramel flavor with just a pinch of alcohol heat in the background; moderately bitter finish. Thick, chewy mouthfeel; smooth with a heavy creaminess.

Oh, yeah! A very big, mouth-pleasing beer. Powerful malt foreground, well-balanced, with just the right amount of hop bitterness and keeping the alcohol factor well-tamed without completely hiding its presence.

375ml bottle 12,5% Abv.
Served chilled in a snifter
Reviewed from rather old notes.

Appearance: The beer appears a medium red-brown in the glass, with a back light revealing a fantastic bright amber-red colour. A rough pour yields a massive, creamy off-white head that lasts fantastically well for the Abv. and leaves rings of thick lacing as it recedes.

Smell: Wow, the nose is far hoppier than I expected - notes of candied citrus peel, grapefruit, sweet orange, orange blossom honey and ripe pineapple indicate that the hopping levels are certainly that of an American barleywine. Other notes include: Caramel, toasted malt, golden raisins, golden syrup and a little brown sugar.

Taste: The flavour is quite sweet upfront, with notes of caramel, toffee, toasted malt and orange blossom honey, but begins to shift towards hoppier notes (candied citrus peel, a hint of resin and a light tropical fruity note) in the middle of the mouth. The finish is quite dry and fairly bitter for a barleywine. There is very little trace of the 12,5% in the flavour and hence dangerously drinkable.

Mouthfeel: The body is just shy of full and slightly sticky and the carbonation is of a medium level and fantastically smooth – this is ridiculously drinkable for 12,5%.

Overall: Mine is bigger than yours is a pretty solid barley wine and one I would love to have again, however I have some trouble with this being listed as an English Barleywine! The malt and citric hop profile are far more in line with the American version of the style than the English.

Served in a snifter at Beer Market - Vernon Hills.

What better way to follow a beef barleywine than an even beefier barleywine? This stuff pours a hazy amber topped by a half-finger of glowing wan khaki foam. The nose comprises Italian bread, candied orange peel, light mandarin orange, and honey. The taste brings in more of the same, with a light twinge of booze, thick caramel, and a more rye-leaning bread component. The body is a hefty medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a solid barleywine, but one that's more cudgel than rapier, unfortunately.

not about to call a beer of this magnitude easy drinking, but as monsterous English style barleywines go, this is about is drinkable as they come. it pours a rich burnt caramel color, with some yeast in suspension and a tall reddish tan head with good retention. I smell sweet toffee heavy English malts and a lot of alcohol. the flavor flashes sweet for awhile, like, white sugar sweet, but it dies back at the finish and lets some interesting bitterness come in. lots of dessert bread and cakey flavors, very holiday. this is an English style barleywine exactly, not one of those big hoppy heathens from the usa. I appreciate its use of restraint and subtlety, despite being so big. the alcohol sting is strong, and the buzz is intense. a good bottle to share no doubt. it has good carbonation for the style, and a predictably full body. finishes relatively clean for how sweet it starts. overall not my favorite offering from these guys, but their craftsmanship is confirmed. probably a must have for the barleywine fiend, a maybe for the rest of us.

Bottle shared at GRG1313’s tasting.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, citrus fruit, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with brown sugar and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.

I hope this is the right place for this review as at least on smell this isn't matching others even closely.

Pours a massive full sniffer of head with just a light pour. Dense opaque yet no floaters with a huge cap of cream head.

The nose is funky as hell. Horse blankets, hay, skunked hops....I'm thinking a crazy sasison farm house ale. A lot of alcohol here too.

Really sweet with some hints of medicinal alcohol notes that dry it out a bit. Hops are present with some rum dried hops perahaps?

Sharp and alcoholic without being good. This beer is dry when it should be creamy, sharp when it should be...it just isn't right here. More paint thinner than great barely win.

Mine is Bigger than yours is an interesting mix of elements. It smells really interesting, it has some hints of horse blanket and the flavor but mostly I get hops and over the top sugar with alcohol paint thinner effect. This isn't a bad beer but for us americans at 11 bucks for about a 12 oz pour...more is needed.
