Had this one a while back, and will definitely buy a bottle (or 5) again. Aroma was of coffee, hops, dark chocolate and a hint of resin. Same goes for taste. Basically this is an Imperial Stout on hoppy steroids and with more carbonation. Yet again a beer from To Øl that one has to try.

Served from a bottle into a dogfish head IPA glass.

Poured a nice dark chocolate color with a tan head. I got a significant amount of head, but that might have been a combination of a bad pour and the glass. The head settled leaving some lacing.

Dark scents of coffee chocolate alcohol and citrus notes

Taste of malt and chocolate with hints of IPA flavors and sweet flavors at the end. Starts of like a stout but finishes like a subtle IPA.

The beer flows freely across the tongue with respectable carbonation. Leaves an alcohol sweetness at the back of the pallet and sides of the mouth.

An enjoyable drink that cuts across styles.

Pours a deep black with a short, creamy tan head that’s just barely covering the body, like a stout. Lots of lacing.

The aroma is hops balancing with coffee and dark malts, adding up to a piney nose with supporting tones of toasted marshmallow, creamy butterscotch, and an interesting berry tone (blueberry, juniper).

This palate isn’t coffee on top of hops, it’s hops, coffee, and residual sugars that have been sewn together like a chocolate-covered pine cone. It’s quite thin for its ABV, bringing in more of the IPA versus the stout character. Bring it all together, though, and you get berry tea, cinnamon, caramel, whipped cream, and peanut all in the same sip – what? Yeah, it’s tough to put a finger on, and it’s unlike any other black ale I’ve ever had. The aftertaste is smoky and piney (dry, in other words), a fitting tribute to the burnt hop this beer seems to be focusing on.

When I picked this up, I pictured something like Sleep Over Coffee IPA, which is my favorite To Øl brew. Instead, I got a very unexpected blend of imperial stout, fruity American ale, and tea. Interesting, sure, but I doubt I’ll be seeking this one out again.

Glass Used: Teku

Appearance: Midnight black, ink like. Head was a creamy, fluffy chocolate milk color. While the majority of the head disappeared quickly, a thick cap has stuck around near the end.

Smell: Sweet milk chocolate, cooled black coffee, some dark berry scents ,rich stout notes, and just a smidge of hoppy resin. There is an undistinguished aroma here that I can't place. This offering is definitely leaning toward a stout than IPA.

Taste: Roasted coffee bean, malty, dark berries (rasp, black and blue), chocolatey flavors are all front and mid palate. Hoppy resiny, slight grapefruit notes and bitters on the backend. What a tasty black ale.

Mouthfeel: I was expecting this one to be heavy like a stout but it's surprisingly medium bodied; more IPA like here. Carbonation is higher than I thought it would be.

Overall: First To Ol brew and I'm not disappointed. The 9% ABV is extremely well hidden making this an easy drinking black ale. If you have access to it, get it and try it.
