Had this one a while back, and will definitely buy a bottle (or 5) again. Aroma was of coffee, hops, dark chocolate and a hint of resin. Same goes for taste. Basically this is an Imperial Stout on hoppy steroids and with more carbonation. Yet again a beer from To Øl that one has to try.

This one pours a black that is impenetrable to light with a very lively dark tan head that is very long lived and leaves an exceptionally consistent lacing down the glass.

The nose is somewhat weak with hints of bread, coffee, chocolate and fruity malt.

The taste is a dry malt that subsides to strong hops and a bitter finish but is somewhat lacking is overall satisfaction. The coffee is notable but really doesn't help.

The moutfeel is a bit watery and less rich than I would have expected from such a rich long lived head.

Overall it is drinkable but not exceptional. This Danish interpretation of an American Black Ale is a fail. Maybe if they had left the word American off I wouldn't be so harsh. But, I have to reflect what is advertised on the label. While this is a very drinkable ale it is not an American ale it is extremely danish it its signature hops and reminds me more of a dark Carlsburg with coffee notes.

Pours a deep black with a short, creamy tan head that’s just barely covering the body, like a stout. Lots of lacing.

The aroma is hops balancing with coffee and dark malts, adding up to a piney nose with supporting tones of toasted marshmallow, creamy butterscotch, and an interesting berry tone (blueberry, juniper).

This palate isn’t coffee on top of hops, it’s hops, coffee, and residual sugars that have been sewn together like a chocolate-covered pine cone. It’s quite thin for its ABV, bringing in more of the IPA versus the stout character. Bring it all together, though, and you get berry tea, cinnamon, caramel, whipped cream, and peanut all in the same sip – what? Yeah, it’s tough to put a finger on, and it’s unlike any other black ale I’ve ever had. The aftertaste is smoky and piney (dry, in other words), a fitting tribute to the burnt hop this beer seems to be focusing on.

When I picked this up, I pictured something like Sleep Over Coffee IPA, which is my favorite To Øl brew. Instead, I got a very unexpected blend of imperial stout, fruity American ale, and tea. Interesting, sure, but I doubt I’ll be seeking this one out again.
