Served on draught at Ma Che Siete Venuti in Rome, Italy.

A: Pours a two finger head of lovely beautiful tan cream lacing, amazing thickness, and perfect retention. Solid black colour. Very appealing.

Sm: Coffee, roast, chocolate, toffee, and cream. Delightfully complex. A moderately strong aroma all in all.

T: All of the notes on the nose combine magnificently in the body. The finish is strong chocolate, and the aftertaste is one of the most pronounced, longest aftertastes I've ever had the delight of experiencing. The coffee and roast are restrained so as to not affect the mouthfeel too much. It's built to be a smooth complex beer. Very high quality. The climax is almost overshadowed by the finish, which slightly upsets the balance. Overall, it's divine.

Mf: Smooth and wet, and quite thick and filling as well. Perhaps a bit too thick.

Dr: It's a late evening conversational sipper, not a summer afternoon beer. I love it and would definitely seek it out. The price was fair in Rome (6 euro per pint) for how high quality this brew is.

01/10/14: Truncated notes for a 2 year old bottle.

A: Pours a one finger wide head of creamy khaki-tan colour. Sinful thickness. Good retention.

Body colour is an opaque solid black. No yeast particles are visible.

Good appearance for an imperial stout overall.

Sm: Luscious dark malts, creamy notes, milky notes, and chocolate malt. Cocoa. Marshmallow. A decadent, appealing aroma of mild strength.

No alcohol or other off-notes are detectable. There's not much in terms of hops or yeast. Certainly on the sweeter side.

T: Has a lovely dark and chocolate malt body. Yeast and hops are nowhere to be found here; it's all the malts. It's nicely chocolatey. The creaminess is a highlight. Unfortunately, there is some harsher burnt character and even some hints of peat that aren't very pleasant. It's a balanced albeit simple flavour profile. Build is cohesive but not gestalt. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour.

Mf: Smooth, wet, and creamy. Full-bodied and thick. Well-carbonated. Not quite as soft or comforting as would be ideal.

Texture does not feel ideal or custom-tailored to the taste.

Dr: Highly drinkable for the high ABV. I'm glad I aged some bottles, but I think this is best fresh. It isn't a world-class imperial stout, but it's mighty tasty. Evil Twin has superior work.

Poured into a snifter a deep deep dark chocolate brown with a thin deep beige head atop.Dark fruit dipped inalcohol, bitter chocolate, and faint wood smoke in the nose, the alcohol is big and sweet. The alcohol is a bit more restrained on the palate with dark fruit and chocolate being the main flavoring, again faint smokiness in the finish. After awhile it gets a little sticky but it's a solid imperial stout.

Best by 2015 on the label.
In a snifter the beer was a black color with a brownish tan head. There was a little bit of lacing.
Strong roasted malt aroma, almost burned. Sweet chocolate.
What I thought was sweet chocolate in the aroma turned out to be more of a bittersweet chocolate taste. Lots of espresso coffee, again almost burned (but not in a bad way).
Medium-bodied, alcohol not noticeable.
I liked both the Yin and the Yang. Will have to try the Black and Tan.

Poured dark brown from bottle into tulip glass.
Nice aroma with coffee and chocolate notes. Mildly smooth taste firm but not overpowering. Taste lingers nicely on the palate making for a very good sipping beer.
A good Imperial Stout worth seeking out.

12 oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a medium creamy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is a little subdued - roasted chocolate malts and some black licorice and a little smoke.

The flavor is some sweetness up front with heavily roasted chocolate malts and some dark fruit and black licorice. There's lots of charred bitterness in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, but a bit watery.

Overall, it's got too much charred bitter roast.

A really good, really simple, true imperial stout. Enjoyed at Tørst in NY from a tap into a wine glass.

A - Near-black, but it was a dimly-lit bar. A finger of unbroken tan-colored head. Decent lacing

S - Minerals/dirt, and that wake-up-to-fresh-pot-of-coffee smell. Hint of molasses and dark, ripe fruit. That typical stout/porter smell. Almost no creamy or vanilla smell to it.

T - REALLLY black coffee. Almost makes your face curl with the strong coffee taste. It settles nicely into a smooth baker's chocolate/cacao. Lacks any smooth vanilla or milk chocolate - almost 0 sweetness.

M - Stung a little at first, but finished nicely toward the back of the mouth. Leaves a slight coat.

O - This is a great benchmark stout. A truly simple, imperial, strong stout. No fancy flavoring, just a damn tasty beer that is just beer.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Nearly black in color with a small light brown head that leaves dots and irregular lines of lacing down the glass. Pretty and appropriate.

The aroma is a big combination of roasted malt, espresso, mild chocolate, and a hint of booze.

The flavor follows the aroma similarly, with big notes of roasted malt and espresso leading the way along with a tiny bit of smoke and char.

Medium to full mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

A nice, roasty, flavorful imperial stout, though there are certainly better and less expensive options available from closer to home.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of tan head which slowly settle into a thin creamy layer. Leaves some good lacing.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt driven aroma with big hints of chocolate, coffee, and toast. Dark roasted barley malt with upfront hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee beans, burnt toast, biscuit, nuts, milk, smoke, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and syrup. Hints of anise spice and leather. Dark fruit hints of raisin, dark cherry, prune, and fig. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely dark and roasty malt forward taste with good notes of chocolate, coffee, smoke, and toast. Big presence of dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, milk, vanilla, smoke, nuts, and yeast. Sweet notes of molasses and some syrup. Also some notes of leather, tobacco, and anise licorice. Dark fruit undertones with notes of cherry, raisin, prune, and fig. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and pretty drying on the finish. Some alcohol heat is felt.

Overall: A pretty good Imperial Stout. Good dark malt notes with a nice presence of smoke.
