Poured from a bottle into pint glass in March 2015.

Appearance: Very dark with nice brown head.

Smell: Pleasant, and can smell roasted coffee and malts. There is some hops aroma, but it is dominated by the coffee.

Taste: Excellent taste. There is both a strong hop and malt flavor, but it is not too bitter, nor too sweet. I like the hint of coffee in the flavor as well. The balance between the flavors is great.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied.

This is the first time I have drank this, but feel it is one of the best imperial stouts I've tasted. You will enjoy it if you like a bold stout. It is complex, and every time I drink it, I get something new. Definitely a beer to drink again.

I Love this beer. Got this with the Yang so that I could make a badass black and tan. Lots of dark chocolate, caramel, and dark fruits. It has a nice sweetness to it as well but the hops are pretty noticeable in this beer. Head retention was awesome and poured a light coffee color which notched all down the glass. Its a very impressive beer and its totally worth the 7.50 I paid for it.

a well balanced and aggressive IPA

A - clear, pale, good head that does not fade quickly, and a small amount of lacing down the glass.

S - hop forward, but not sharp or biting. subtle malty background.

T - Wow, what an IPA. This has so much hop flavor, but it isn't overly bitter at all. I was loving the hops so much that I had a hard time concentrating on the malts. However, the malts where there in undertones for sure and balanced the beer nicely. wish i had more than a tasting poor of this one.

M - smooth and refreshing. This was an IPA that could be swished around a few times and it would continue to develop. The carbonation was perfect. it was definitely present, but not overpowering.

D - I would drink several of these at once if they weren't so darned expensive. $6.99 for a single 12oz. bottle. If they come down in price, I will buy some. a fantastic IPA that i am happy i had the chance to try!

Light on the nose, but perfect on the taste. Very toasty and even slightly smoky. Typical vanilla and cocoa nib notes.

No heat for a 10.0%abv noticed. As it warms up, the same. Only more smoke comes out of it.

Mouthfeel is a perfect stout.

Should've got yang too to see what kind of concoction would've been created.

I'm reviewing the Black and Tan, Yin and Yang. It's awesome. You should get both and do it because it's incredible. You can smell more hops than you could possibly hope for in a stout and more barley than you could ever wish for in an IPA. It's amazing- I highly recommend you get both and do it.

Re-reviewed on 8/25/14.

Bottled on 5/19/14. Poured into a chalice.

A wonderful no adjuncts (i.e. chocolate, coffee, etc.) imperial stout with a sharp/sweet finish. Hides its 10% ABV well. Very pleased with this beer. Definitely opens up as it warms for better aromas and tastes. Not enough stouts like this and the beer gets bonus points for it. Becoming a big Evil Twin fan. Need to side-by-side this with the Fultons. 4.75

A - Pours slightly viscous, black, opaque, with a three-finger light brown/red tinged mousey head. Head dies down to a sustaining layer in a few minutes. 4.5

S – Some coffee, but not too strong, roasted malts, vanilla and a tinch of raisins. 4.25

T – Roasted malts, licorice, some minor sweetness, a tiny bit of smoke (but not off-putting to those who don’t like smoky beers), with accompanying dark chocolate bitterness. 5

MF – Medium bodied with a medium dry finish. Smooth with a nippy bitter finish. 4.75

A – Pours an opaque black/reddish brown with a half-finger brown head that dissipates quickly, but retains a thin film. Average lacing. 4.25

S – Roasted malts, faint chocolate, some flora sweetness and a bit of alcohol. 4.5

T – Burnt/charred is up front, but not in a bad way. Roasted malts, coffee, licorice, bitterness but not overwhelming. 4.5

MF – Smooth start with a dry finish. Medium bodied. 4

Pours midnight black with a slowly receding caramel foamy head. Aroma is dark espresso, coconut, coffee. Taste is following the nose..full bodied dark chocolate, Colombian coffee and sweet cacao. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with heat. Overall a thick and creamy boozy stout with a lot of body..wouldn't normally drink this in summer but highly recommended for time to come

Appearance – Pitch black with a dark chocolate colored, rich foamy head. The head sticks around longer than their other stouts and leaves good lacing on the glass.

Smell – A solid scent of malt, chocolate, coffee, with a touch of brownie.

Taste – Roasted malts, Chocolate, coffee. Kind of similar to my all time favorite “Aún Más A Jesús”, but with less alcohol and flavor.

Mouthfeel – Creamy, lightly carbonated, and very smooth for 10%abv. Maybe even a bit on the light side; could use a little more alcohol or carbonation. No lingering aftertaste which is nice.

Drinkability – This one really took me by surprise based on the relatively low BA score of only 3.9. It’s FAR better than that in my opinion, although I really tend to like all Evil Twin stouts.

12oz bottle poured into my duvel glass

A- pours a nearly pitch black color... starts off deep brown, once the bottle is fully poured you get a combination of complete black... little to no head, minimal lacing

S- dark roasted chocolate, sweet smelling fruit? Cherries? Strawberry? Pumpernickel bread

T- sweet dark fruits covered in dark chocolate. Pumpernickel bread in the back

M- slick, oily mouthfeel. Oily thick body. Mild hop bite...

O- very interesting take on this stout... I get sweet fruit, bread and malt in one complete
Layer of beer.... very complex for the style.... kudos evil twin

From a 3 month old 12 oz. bottle.
A: the 2” quickly dissipating head is deep tan, the body is pitch black.
S: roast, coffee
T: exceptionally creamy, a range of malt flavors from caramelly vanilla to roast coffee. The roast especially comes forward in the aftertaste. There is some dried fruit but the main thing here is the malt action.
F: the body is medium full, the carbonation is very fine and soft suggestive of Guinness style nitro carbonation.
O: The creamy texture of this beer is outstanding.

Found this at the local liquor store, and I've heard awesome things about Evil Twin so I had to give it a try.
Pours a very dark black color with a delightful mocha/tannish head. Smell is sweet with a little bit of hops, black liquorice, coffee, and dark chocolate. Taste is sweet ending with a hoppy, bitter aftertaste. Chocolate, coffee, Coca-Cola, and dried figs.
Definitely a delicious stout, just a little overpriced ($3.99) in my opinion.

Had this on draught at a local pub.

Looked great; It was almost pitch black with a light-tan head and lacing. The smell was incredible. Strong smell of coffee, roasted malt, and (what I believe to be) cocoa. The taste was incredible. Coffee, roasted malt, and cocoa were present in the taste as well. There was some bitterness, but it was also very sweet. The really smooth, creamy mouth feel really brought it all together. I'd recommend this to anyone that likes imperial stouts. It's one of my favorites so far.

22 oz bottle, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color with a quarter of a finger of chocolate-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin lacing of foam that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very aromatic! Tons of rich, earthy, roasted malt up front, imparting aromas of freshly toasted dark bread and freshly roasted coffee beans. There’s a hint of smoke, as well as lots of caramel and brown sugar and dark chocolate. Inviting and delicious!

Taste: Wow! Strong flavors of roasted malt up front, imparting notes of coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, a touch of smoke, licorice and star anise. There’s quite a bit of caramel-like sweetness to balance out that smoke and licorice, and finally, the beer finishes with just a hint of slightly bitter hops. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Chewy and extremely smooth, as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 10%, there is a pleasant alcohol warmth on the palate.

Overall: This is another excellent imperial stout and another excellent beer from Evil Twin. Highly recommended

12 oz

Pours jet black light tan film for a head retains indefinitely.

Smells of cocoa, roasted coffee, and toast. Very rich.

Tastes of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, brown sugar, oak, and licorice.

Medium to full body with velvety carbonation on the tongue.

An exceptionally good stout, so much flavor and aroma here. Definitely worth trying, among the best I've had.

A: pitch black, dark cocoa head, good retention, no light passage

S: huge dry bitter chocolate, some mellow sweetness shows up against the roast, very nice

T: sweet malts , chocolate, tons of bitter roast all the way through, notes of coffee as well. This imperial stout leans more to the roasted side than sweet which I like

Mf: nice big body, mellow carbonation, smooth texture

O: very nice imperial stout, lots of flavor, worth a try

Poured into 13 oz tulip glass. Pours a midnight black, with a nice inch of thin mocha head, little lacing. Smell is of roasted malts, Expresso, some smoke, and bakers chocolate. Taste all of that with a touch of alcohol in the finish. Body is thinner then my favorites, but doesn't hold it back much. Plenty of life, with a fairly easy drinkability for it's ABV. I really love the flavor on this beer, wish it was a little chewier. Nice stout.

Pours a black color. 1/2 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and good lacing. Smells of sweet malt, alcohol, slight liquor, roasted malt, hint of hops, slight bready yeast, hint of dark citrus, and a hint of wood. Fits the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of roasted malt, sweet malt, alcohol, liquor, slight hops, hint of wood, hint of dark citrus, and a hint of bready yeast. Overall, decent appearance, good aroma, great body, and great blend.

Pours an entirely opaque, very dark brown. This is as dark brown as it gets before becoming black. A gorgeous, foamy mocha colored head forms and lingers. Mild aromas of coffee with emerging light notes of both cherry and chocolate. It has a viscous, nearly chewy mouthfeel with some carbonation scrubbing mid to late. Flavors of toffee and dark chocolate balanced with some grassy hop that emerges in the middle. It finishes strong with coffee. No alcohol warmth. Weird for a 10 ABV. This is a nicely balanced stout and is quite drinkable. A very well crafted brew.

Strong, oily aroma is smoky with nutty and roast coffee tones, very tempting. It pours black as midnight with a thick, fine-bubbled, dark tan head - most appetizing. Smoky flavor fills the mouth with roast coffee, licorice, unsweet chocolate, nuts and a hint of oak. Texture is silky smooth, on the thick side, and subtly fizzy, but the tingle that it leaves behind on the lips and tongue persists for a while. Recommended!

Reviewed from notes. Had at the Independent. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into an oversized tulip glass.

A: Extremely dark brown, opaque, with a good-sized mocha brown head that fades slowly. Low visible carbonation.

S: Chocolate and coffee, booze and some oak in the background.

T: Sweet chocolate, some coffee, strong but not unpleasant booze, with tobacco, leather, and dark fruit in the background. Booze flavor at the hang.

M: Thick body, low carbonation sensation but average for the style. Alcohol noticeable but seems an integral part of the beer.

O: This is a pleasant, tasty beer. Thoroughly enjoyable, and I'll likely have another if I find it around.

I bought the Yin and Yang to try together. I tried the Yang, and now the Yin. I prefer the Yin. Next I will mix them.

The Yin is a deep rich stout so it's black and not terribly aromatic (especially after the Yang). It has a ton of flavors going on. This is the kind of stout I usually like to age, but it is good now. Lots of roasty flavors In the malt. Not much hops showing through. The aftertaste is sublime. I prefer this to the Yang, but both are very good.

So now together - they seem to have lost quite a bit of edge but gained complexity. The aroma is great, but the taste is bewilderingly complex. I like it and would recommend this big time. I was skeptical, but it proved to be a first rate blend.

Keep in mind, drinking these is like doing shots. Very strong stuff.

S - Chocolate, olive, smoked malt, oats, earthy hops, tobacco, alcohol.

T - Black malt, dark chocolate, bitter hops, brown sugar, hint of ash, grains, alcohol.

M - Medium-full bodied, medium-low carbonation.

O - Very tasty, I love trying Evil Twin's stouts and darker beers, always interesting.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of tan head which slowly settle into a thin creamy layer. Leaves some good lacing.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt driven aroma with big hints of chocolate, coffee, and toast. Dark roasted barley malt with upfront hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee beans, burnt toast, biscuit, nuts, milk, smoke, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and syrup. Hints of anise spice and leather. Dark fruit hints of raisin, dark cherry, prune, and fig. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely dark and roasty malt forward taste with good notes of chocolate, coffee, smoke, and toast. Big presence of dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, milk, vanilla, smoke, nuts, and yeast. Sweet notes of molasses and some syrup. Also some notes of leather, tobacco, and anise licorice. Dark fruit undertones with notes of cherry, raisin, prune, and fig. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and pretty drying on the finish. Some alcohol heat is felt.

Overall: A pretty good Imperial Stout. Good dark malt notes with a nice presence of smoke.
