Bottled 11/23/13 and poured 2/15/14. $4 single.

Appearance: Pours black, black, black. Finger of a brown head. Basically no lacing. Definitely looks like an Imperial Stout. I always hope for some good head retention and/or lacing though, even at the 10%. (3.5/5)

Smell: Interesting for an RIS. There's an obvious hoppiness, but it's not overbearing. Then there's the usual culprits of chocolate, dark fruits, and coffee, also with almost a tobacco sort of thing going on. I like it. (4.25/5)

Taste/feel: Medium/heavy body with about a medium carbonation. Was bitter for the first few sips, but really this is a pretty sweet RIS. Dark fruit flavors strangely seem to dominate the taste, as the chocolate/roast flavors take a back seat. The traditional RIS flavors seem to meld best at the very first moment Yin hits the tongue, and that's about it. Enjoyable RIS, but I'm actually disappointed in the flavor a bit after smelling all that I did. The aftertaste is super dry, slightly ashy/smokey and tobacco-esque, which is nice to get after having what, to me, is almost a wallop of dried dark fruit flavors. Depth of flavor improves as it warms, with some more tobacco and roasty tastes coming through. (4/5, 4/5)

Yin is a very nice brew. $4 isn't an insane price to ask for this beer, but I think I'd tag it at $3 a single for a fair price. I'd have this one again as I enjoy it quite a lot, but there are better options available at a lower price, which seems to be the case with any Evil Twin beer.

Poured into a shaker pint glass.

Look: Dirty motor oil black. A cookie dough colored head stays foamy for a good while. Random spots of foam lacing.

Aroma: Dark chocolate, slightly smokey with a bit of an earthy kick in the end.

Taste: A very sharp, bitter start. A lot of earthy, smokey peat moss. Really bitter chocolate in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Very dry. Very bitter aftertaste.

Overall: I think I set my expectations a bit too high for this one. Certainly looked good. I think I was looking for a few more coffee notes and other decadent features that I didn't find.

Bought at the proper pour a small business within the source. I've either like or really liked the stuff that eviltwin has put out so I decide to take a shot on this one. Bought for around 3 bucks, poured into a snifter. Side note: bottle is really full, potential for it not to have much carbonation due to lack of headspace.

A&S: Upfront lots of dark chocolate with some spices in the background. In the glass it is more sugary milk chocolate than dark. Some background tones include roasty coffee, cherries, and bourbon. Jet black colored beer. Head is caramel brown and pours about a finger and retains in a ring.

T&M: The taste is primarily roasty. A touch of bourbon and vanilla in it as well. Getting some spice presence midway though. More more bitter than it smelt. Alcohol is well hidden, but felt as it warms the body. A bit too smokey in the finish. Body and thick and syrupy, carbonation is present but low.

Overall: Nothing mind blowing, but pretty good. I'm glad I tried it. It is especially good considering the price and the ABV. Would probably buy again depending on the circumstances.

today (a freezing cold snowy gray day in colorado), is the perfect day for yin. a very very well made imperial stout, rather familiar honestly, nothing too distinct, but its an excellent example of the style, one of the best going in fact. inky black with some radiance in color, a few inches of heady brown fluff as well. not boozy or sweet, but full of aromas and flavors from coffee to bakers chocolate, burnt barley without the bitter, milk sugars, even brown sugar or raw sugar, again, without the sweetness. the finish and the feel are what makes this memorable. velvety smooth, soft as they come, with a long accelerating flavor crescendo of cocoa and super dark barley. a little tannic, lots of fun. enough carbonation, but this one is about body, and my is it full. robust enough for the coldest days of winter, i like this a fair bit more than the imperial ipa that is supposed to accompany it.
