330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.0%. Amber colour, large off-white head. Aroma of piney and fruity American hops, notes of orange marmalade. The flavour is medium sweet with loads of American hops, bitter of course, but not quite as extreme as expected. Mixing with imperial stout Yin is recommended.

I am rather inCANredulous at how many CANs of Evil Twin Brewing's beer I have acCANumulated for inclusion in The CANQuest (tm)! I had begun running through them at the end of New Beer Sunday (Week 677) & CANtinued my efforts yesterday during NBS (Week 678) so now I am simply finishing up. I have a couple/few days' worth left, but since my 53rd birthday is next Sunday (Week 679) & I have plans that may curtail my involvement that day, I am getting them in while I CAN.

From the CAN: "This is one half of a Black and Tan drink. Not just any Black and Tan but the one where a toasted smug and hoppy fella get together to make a sublime Taiji style balance. Mix the Yin & Yang together (or enjoy this profoundly evil Imperial Stout solo)."

I am sticking with each one solo, especailly since it now seems that Yin & Yang exists as a separate beer. I would prefer to allow the brewery to mix the version that they envision.

I realized upon CANducting the Crack! that it was a brimful craft CAN since I got a spritz across my fingers, followed by some foaming through the vent. I then CANmenced a slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. Unbidden, it formed just under two fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with good retention that left nice lacing in its wake. Color was Amber to Deep Amber/Light Copper (SRM = > 9, < 13) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was Evil with a pungent pine dankness and wafting alcohol fumes to tickle my sinuses! OMFG, if I needed any reminder to go slow with this one after last night's Yin, this provided it. Mouthfeel was big, full & thick, like a dollop scooped onto my tongue where it instantly went to work, burning & jackhammering at the old, weak taste buds that were no match for its intensity. While this onslaught was happening, my sinuses filled with an unrelenting pine resin & dankness that seemed to spontaneously CANbust, burning my nose hairs & making my eyes sweat. Following that, my heart decided to begin beating unCANtrollably, as though it wanted to jump out of my chest & run off. Phew! And that was just the first sip ... What blend of Yin & Yang would be suitable for human CANsumption?!? I am VERY curious to try theirs as a result. In solemn CANtemplation, I licked my lips & really set off another wave of unrelenting pine. 8=O This ain't for real! Even as a self-avowed, self-described hophead, I began to do the Scooby Doo & shake & shiver. Phew. Okay, I was NOT expecting this! As a general euphoria slowly overtook me, followed by a nice mellowness, I took my time with the remainder of the CAN. Finish was CANtinued hot & dry, but just soooo gooood! I am soooo tired of tropical hops AIPAs & don't even get me started on NEIPAs. This CAN of pine resin was just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe he ordered me to come in because of it. I CAN never keep this stuff straight.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) can into a conical pint glass; batch 2 is the only production information.
A: Pours a cloudy amber color with a robust more than one inch, foamy off-white head, strong, fluffy retention and modest, disorganized lacing.
S: Aromas of caramel, lemon, and spice.
T: Taste follow the nose, which an occasional tropical fruit flavor breaking through. Bitterness understated and balancing well with other flavors.
M: Medium bodied with medium to strong carbonation.
O: A relatively light, refreshing DIPA. Construction does appear designed to be blended into Black and Tan. Cannot wait to see how that comes out.

It pours amber with about a finger's worth of foam. The aroma is very malty with hardly any hops. Not sure how fresh it was as the only info at the bottom of the can was the word "batch". Not helpful. The taste was once again dominated primarily by malts with some late bitterness. Again no hops to be detected. Mildly carbonated.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter at Hair of the Dog, Bangkok.

Very deep amber orange color, it tops with relatively thin frothy off-white head that stands for a while before sinking to some bubble atop and leaving some lacing patch and spot on the glass-side.

In a nose, it is rich of malt with its toasted bread, biscuit, dough, caramel, toffee, honey, and sweet molasses. Hop also provides notes of fruity citrus, pine, intense peppery spice, and grass. Alcohol is there too with subtle pungent touch.

Hop and malt is quite balance through the palate sensation, it is led by fruity hop with its citrus, pine, resin, pepper, spice, and grass while malt with its bread, biscuit, toasted husk, roasted, caramel, honey, and toffee together with some warming and sweet alcohol. The end and aftertaste is quite lasting with bitterness mostly from hop and partially from roasted and toasted flavor.

Bold and full body with rather smooth mouthfeel and moderate carbonation that is enough to carry all the things well, the finish is dry.

Bold and intense with lots of malt and hop character to make it deep and strong, alcohol is not much hidden here but to your face with real pleasure.

Batch #2. 12oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a hazy glowing copper with a big chunky off-white head that slowly falls leaving great thick retention and very sticky lacing. The aromas have lots of malts along with some citrus. Lots of orange along with some caramel. The flavors follow the nose. Lots of orange along with some hints of lemon and grapefruit. A nice amount of pine resin. Subtle hints of black pepper. Strong malt backbone with an equally solid bitterness. It's not that sweet at all. It finishes slightly spicy with a mild warmth. Mouthfeel is nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and dangerously drinkable.

This is a solid DIPA. It's malty and bitter. The craftsmanship is on point. It's fun to drink.

Pours a burnt orange with a large foamy off-white head. Nose is faintly dank, but biscuity (the malts come through strongly on the nose). Palate opens with the same weed and fresh whole wheat bread. A touch of pine on the back of the palate. Medium mouthfeel.

A brew that will almost certainly make a great ale half of a black and tan, but on its own comes off as a dated, far-too-malty, East Coast IPA.

Brewed for Evil Twin Brewing by Dorchester Brewing Company, Boston, MA.
Poured from a 12 ounce can.
Moderate pour yields a one inch plus white head over an amber body with sticky lacing. Nose of tropical fruit, dank pine, and citrus. Taste of dank bitterness and not much else. Good feel and overall? I like the nose, but the flavor is all bitter!

12oz can into a pint glass. " smudged BAT O stamped on the bottom, so no clue as to freshness.

murky orange body, very good creamy foamy head, excellent lacing.

only getting very faint malt on the nose.

malt more powerful than the hops on taste, though both are present. so the balance here is ok in my book.

between medium and full on the mouth, bittersweet on the finish.

overall, given the unhelpful freshness dating, this one may be a bit past its prime. still, it turns out as a well balanced dipa. also of note, the 10.0 abv is dangerously well hidden.
