Pours a hazy reddish orange. Aroma of caramel, toffee and orange. Very light astringent and boozy taste, grass, caramel and strong pine dominates. Fades to a modest resin and pleasant pine on the palate. Medium body and carbonation.

L: Nice deep and bright orange color and some carbonation bubbles. It pours a decent head that turns quickly into a very thin lace. The beer is also somewhat hazy.

A: Strong grapefruit with some light resin and alcohol notes.

T: Very crisp with strong grapefruit notes up front. Some pine resin mingles with the grapefruit in the body and there are some bready malt notes to balance out the hops. The finish has a pretty strong alcohol kick. There is no date on this and it might have been sitting too long, but the boozy finish and aftertaste is rather off-putting. A solid DIPA taste until the finish.

F: Moderately thick and well balanced for a DIPA. Unfortunately the finish leaves your mouth feeling like you drank some hard liquor.

O: I really liked this beer until I swallowed it. I honestly have a feeling that it was sitting at the store for bit too long because of its high price point ($13 for a 4 pack) and the advertisement that you should buy the equally priced Yin for a black and tan. I would love to try some that I knew was fresh and see if the somewhat ruinous alcohol notes are still there (if they weren't you could send taste, feel and overall up a point). As it is I can't recommend this beer to anyone who isn't a whiskey drinker and a hop lover. I don't consider it undrinkable (in fact as both of those I kind of like it in a weird way), but it cannot compete with a good DIPA without the alcohol notes from a style perspective.

This beer was poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Blind Pig mug and enjoyed at apx. 55F.

(Side note: After submitting the initial review I attempted the black and tan recommendation of the brewer. The aroma is more strongly alcoholic, but the roasted malts of the Yin stout balance out the booze finish much better. Still too alcoholic, but it does work better. Individual Yang review to follow soon.)

From the maker of one of my favorite IPAs, Molotov Cocktail, this obviously borrows some of the key hops. Huge tropical fruit punch flavor with a mix of oranges and kumquats, this keeps a rather stiff toffee malt backbone. It doesn't have all the complexity of Molotov Cocktail but it keeps the alcohol heat tempered so that drinking it is a bit easier.

Bottled 3/6/2014. Pours very hazy chestnut brown/copper color with a thick 1 finger foamy light tan head that was full of bubbles and faded slowly, leaving minimal lacing and a layer on top.

Smells of pineapple, caramel, citrus hops, piney hops, grapefruit, roasted grains, malty sweetness, fruity candy like Razzles or Skittles, herbs and a red wine like aroma.

Tastes sweeter than it smells with a lot more malt and booze in the mix. Flavor includes graham cracker, toffee, pineapple, orange juice, red grapefruit, caramel, roasted grains, citrus hops, piney hops, a buttered biscuit, tea leaf, fruity candy, spices like pepper and cinnamon and hint of booze like rum. A lot sweeter than I expected and relatively well balanced, however the booze does get more noticeable as it warms and the malt complexities seem to get stronger in the finish. The hop bitterness is powerful but tames the ABV to a manageable level.

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy with a medium body, light carbonation and a slick feel that trails off bitter, leaving a grainy sweetness and some citrus aftertaste lingering.

I should have had this bottle sooner when it was fresher to get the most out of the hops, but besides that regret I enjoyed this beer. Not the smoothest or most sessionable DIPA, but it had a nice variety of hops balanced by a pronounced malt profile which kept the 10% ABV in check. Evil Twin always pushes the boundaries and this was another interesting brew from them.
