I picked up a bottle of Evil Twin's Ashtray Heart a couple weeks ago for $3.59 at Holiday Market. I like smoked beers, especially smoked Porters and Stouts and I'm interested to see how this one turns out, so lets see how it goes. Bottled 2/5/14. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks ok, but I think it's a little plain looking and not the most eye catching. It poured a nice black color that didn't let any light come through and it had two fingers worth of creamy light mocha colored head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some nice rings of patchy lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the smoke being the first up and it shows up a good amount while imparting a nice bonfire like smoke aroma. Up next comes a nice and bright dark fruit aroma with some nice dark cherry aromas coming through and it's followed by the malts which impart a nice dark roasted malt, chocolate and light coffee like aromas. This beer had a pretty nice aroma, there was nice balance and it seemed to have just a little complexity to it.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the smoke still being the first to show up and it imparts those same smokey aspects that it did in the aroma. Up next comes that same dark fruit aspect that I got in the aroma, with the cherry's still sticking out the most and it's followed by the malts which impart the same aspects that they did in the aroma with the roasted malts and chocolate sticking out the most. On the finish it gets slightly watery with pretty much not bitterness and a slightly alcohol flavors and there's some nice smokey and roasted malt flavors showing up in the background. This was a pretty nice tasting beer, but I wish the smoke and roasted malts showed up more with the dark fruits showing up in the background.

M- Smooth, a little creamy. a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium with a medium amount of carbonation. This beer had a pretty nice mouthfeel that worked well with it.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and a nice example of the style, giving Evil Twin's reputation and what they wrote on the label i was expecting the smokey aspect to be more intense than it was and that could be because of the age, but I have noticed age effect the smoke that much in my experience, so I'm not sure about that. This beer had a nice drinkability, it was smooth, a little creamy, a little crisp, not too filling and the taste did a nice job of holding my attention, I think one is the perfect amount for me, anymore than that and it might start to wear on me. What I like the most about this beer was the complexity, the cherry flavors added a nice layer of complexity to it. What I liked the least about this beer was that the roasted malts and smoke weren't just a little stronger, I found myself wishing those aspects were more intense. I would buy this beer again, but it isn't something I'm going to stock up on and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of smoked beers. All in all I was happy with this beer, it wasn't quite what I was expecting, but in the end I enjoyed it and i think it was a little unique for the style. This isn't my favorite Evil Twin beer or my favorite Smoked Beer, it falls above the middle in both categories. Nice job guys, this was a nice Smoked Porter, keep up the solid work.

330ml bottle bought from Lighthouse Wines, Jordanstown

Poured pretty much completely black even when held up to the light. Mocha head poured tight, thick and foamy then faded slowly to nice thickish covering... some light sticky lines of lacing around the glass...

Aroma - Strong meat smoked roasted malts, dark chocolate notes, dark sweet coffee, nice treacle / burnt sugar sweetness, leathery, toasted nuts, faint liquorice, some pepperiness...

Taste - Roasted chocolate malts to the fore mixed with some nice meaty smoke, some creamy / milky coffee traces, woody, treacle and brown sugar sweetness, some grassy / peppery traces, some oatiness, liquorice, light sweet nutty notes...

Feel - Quite smooth and creamy... medium/full bodied... very drinkable considering the 8.9% alcohol...

Overall - A very good smoked porter - sweet, smokey and roasty. I really enjoyed this... recommended

a really decadent smoked beer here, called a porter but definitely an imperial, maybe even a stout. thought it was normal abv when opened and was shocked to read the bottle at nearly 9%. one of the better evil twin brews going, a definitely the best smoked dark beer i can remember of late. chalky finished dark brown beer, silky smooth and alluring, enticing, and all dolled up with a full inch of rich dark mocha head. the nose is a mixture of sweet and bakers chocolates with a ton of smoke on it, not the lighter cherrywood type, but proper heavy german rauch stuff, fireside smelling and balanced well with lots of special dark malts. rich caramel middle in the taste is the real surprise, never expected such a robust desserty vibe to this, i dont know why i underestimated it, but i did. love the intense chocolate without the sweetness, and the way the smoke makes everything pop without crowding out the clever malt bill in any way at all. full bodied almost syrupy texture, but i find myself drinking it too quickly. its just so smooth and flavorful and im curious for more than the one bottle i have. strong but well hidden alcohol, it drinks like dessert honestly. what makes it special is the grain, one of the best smoke beers ive had, and one i need to snag more of. really worth trying.

Dark pour with very high carbonation, producing a thick lacing that lasts throughout the tasting. Smells like burnt wood, bacon and oranges (??). Medium body, made a bit rough by the high carbonation; fruit bitterness, chocolate and dark cherries, and a moderate amount of alcohol.

I am drinking a one month old 12 oz. bottle in a craft beer stout glass.
A: Pours brilliant ebony under a thick, finely bubbled, 1” light tan head that grips the side of the glass leaving ledges of lace marking each drink.
S: Roast, dark unsweetened chocolate and smoke.
T: Mild roast, grain, and dark chocolate at the beginning with caramel in the middle finishing with bitter chocolate, citrus rind hop bitterness, grain, smoke and a hint of bacon.
F: The texture is super creamy, silky smooth and full The carbonation is very fine and soft and uniform
O: Great flavors but the rich texture really makes this beer a delight to drink.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice. Bottled on date of 02/05/14.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of tan head that slowly fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A roasty and sweet dark malt forward aroma with good hints of chocolate and smoke. Dark roasted barley malts with upfront hints of dark chocolate, coffee beans, smoke, burnt toast, biscuit, dough, tobacco, leather, caramel, toffee, and yeast. Sweet scent of burnt molasses and brown sugar. Hints of anise licorice spice and slight pepper as well. Dark fruit hints of raisin, cherry, and prune. Hops are very light. A very good roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty and sweet dark malt driven taste with big notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Dark roasted barley malts with a big taste of dark chocolate, coffee beans, and smoke as well as notes of biscuit, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, tobacco, leather, dough, and yeast. Sweet taste of burnt molasses and brown sugar. Slight anise and pepper spicing. Dark fruit undertones of cherry, raisin, and prune. Subtle earthy hops. A very nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, silky, and fairly drying on the finish. Alcohol is masked well.

Overall: A very good imperial smoked porter/stout. Good roasty malt flavors with a nice kick of smoke.

Dark brown, nearly black and opaque with ruby highlights where the light gets through. Tightly bubbled head of brown foam settles out slowly, leaving frothy bubbles around the inside of the glass.

Aroma of cocoa and licorice, smoke and leather. Rich and bold flavor immediately hits the taste buds, smoke and espresso, cocoa, root beer, and a hint of cherry. Lots of flavors, lots of character, very complex. Malts are darkly toasted, no bitter roast flavor, hops are understated, but there's a good balance of sweet and bitter. Slightly ashen dark roasted malt flavor lingers, perhaps hence the name. Full mouth feel, moderate carbonation. Alcohol strength is masked by the flavors. Very good beer.
