This beer was brewed and bottled in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, right next door to Charleston. As such the Charleston Beer Exchange was chosen to be the debut location for bottles of this beer and I happened to be there when the first cases arrived in early January 2012. This is the first bottle pulled out of the first box.

I waited to enjoy it with a few friends.

The fizz potential on this beer is dangerous. This beer has more head and bubble over than any other beer I have seen. I poured just a bit into a glass carefully and it still overflowed and the bottle also started bubbling over onto the counter and continued to produce a stream of head out the top for the next 10 to 15 minutes. By the way it pours almost black.

Smells like coffee and dark chocolate covered raisins.

It tastes like sweet and sour coffee with bitterness from the coffee. It is almost sweet but past the tip of the tongue it is gone.

The texture is smooth with a medium tingle.

Bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop. Black in color with nice dark chocolaty colored head. Head dissipated fairly quickly into a thin collar. Aroma is of hazelnut and a little bit of chestnut as well. Dark roasted malt and some sweet molasses too. Taste is nice and nutty as well. Sweet for a stout without being overly sweet. Nice molasses flavor along with the nuttiness. Silty mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Nearly black pour with a very thin khaki head. Spotted and specking lacing down the glass.

Rich, full aroma of coffee and roasted malt along with some chocolate. A coffee/dessert lover's heaven.

Roasted malt, sweet and burnt chocolate, and lots and lots of rich, authentic coffee flavor along with some mild bitterness. Incredibly well balanced.

Medium to thick bodied. Feels rich and decadent--would make quite a dessert.

A delicious coffee porter I can't wait (and hope!) to have again!

32 oz growler, poured into a goblet

Appearance: Pours a gorgeous, pitch black color with a quarter of a finger of dark caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved away into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed wispy clouds that gathered in the center of the top of the beer.

Aroma: Roasted malt and tons of dark chocolate. Notes of vanilla, caramel, burnt sugar, brownies, floral hops.

Taste: Amazing! Malty up front, quickly followed by tons of chocolate, vanilla and caramel. Finally, there is no hops bitterness to speak of, which I overall prefer. Delicious!

Mouthfeel: Chewy and smoooooooth! Virtually no carbonation, but that could be because it was poured out of a growler. With an ABV of 8.4%, there is a definite presence of alcohol on the palate. A very pleasant alcohol warmth.

Overall: Damn, this is an awesome beer! Tasty as hell, and very comforting (as far as a beer can be comforting). Probably a bit too much on the sweet side for those who mind that, but I don’t so I love it! I’m definitely getting several bottles of this again!

A sweet concoction with much taste akin to a vanilla almod milk off the shelves, sugar, and coffee added. Medium mouthfeel, a little creamy. more roast at the end of the bottle,lots of coffee.Brown, with reddish tinge in the retained head. Peeno’s bottle, we both concur below expectations though very drinkable.

About a finger of light brown head, and an oily brown body. Good retention and a bit of lace initially. I noticed that this had been poured into a pitcher first because it was pouring very foamy.

Nose contains black coffee, vanilla, and some almond-- bittersweet.

Rich, full taste with bitter coffee and unctuous vanilla sliding in on the finish. Almond suggests a splash of amaretto in the coffee.

The head is foamy, but underneath, there's not a lot of body. Doesn't support the taste.

Good, but it overreaches itself and ends up too thin. Rarely do I really dock something for lame mouthfeel, but in this instance (and maybe it had something to do with the draft system), the feel could not support the flavor.

THIS is a great beer. Looked like candy sitting in the snifter on the beer bar at the DeCicco's in Brewster, NY. Gorgeous brown head floating on a black sea of goodness. Smell was complex with everything a good porter should have....and more. Coffee, vanilla, chocolate, smokiness, sweetness, booze...damn. Taste followed nose, and the smoothness was outstanding. Booze at 7.5 is not heavy, but what is there is fairly well hidden. Nice chewiness on the mouth feel, but not overdone. I would have bought a growler for an upcoming holiday party, but at $35 a pop, I decided the masses would not appreciate it enough.

sniffed the bottle after opening and got a nose full of gushing foam... sad to see good beer absorbed in a paper towel.. decanted to let carbonation to settle.

dark, dark brown, if not black, color with mocha head..

tastes and smells amazing. like a biscotti.. toasted malts and nutty coffee.. vanilla beans blended perfectly...like the icing on your beer.. smooth mouthfeel and virtually no bitter or alcohol presence.. a good breakfast beer...

Served from tap into a flared pilsner. Poured a massively dark brown with a half finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, bread, dark chocolate, and milk chocolate. The flavor was of sweet malt, bread, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. It had a heavy feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. For this one to be a porter it was actually quite enjoyable. All of the flavors were spot on as far as how they were blended together and their intensity. This made the brew quite enjoyable and easy to drink. The dark chocolate bitterness was a very nice touch here and helped out with some of the roastiness that I got on the flavor. A solid example of the style that I'm glad I got the chance to try.

Dirty oil black pour. Nice layer of fine carb tan head.

Significant roast in the aroma. Malt, espresso, dark chocolate.

Taste, nice roastiness here as well. Malt and peat and a faint cardboard that was the only negative in this one for me. Cardboard quickly disappeared to a nice dry roast with heavy dark chocolate and cocoa.

Nearly creamy but also a bit dry. Drinks very easy for the size. Up there with the Yin as my favorite from these guys so far.

Bottle picked up @ Stein's in NOLA.

When opened, it let out a violent hiss. I feared it would spew forth, but alas, it did not. A very careful pour still resulted in a 3 finger head that still grew a bit minutes later. It definitely seems as if it's got some carbonation issues.

The aroma was very roasted, with plenty of rich coffee and espresso notes. sweet vanilla, and surprisingly, you can get a bit of toasted nuttiness, presumably from the Almonds, which adds another layer to the complexity. This reminds me in a way of Vic@Sea...

You get plenty of dark, roasted coffee and an intense espresso up front. The vanilla adds a nice balancing sweetness, along with some sweet milk chocolate notes.

Despite the foaming issues, the carbonation isn't actually much of an issue. It's a hair spiked, but for the most part, it has a nice creamy, full bodied feel despite the carbonation.

Overall, I think I made the perfect choice by cracking this at 8:30 in the AM...

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Absolutely volcanoed out of bottle, I quickly tried to pour a glass and got 80% foam. Recorked the bottle to clean up and scoop foam out of my glass. Filled another glass completely with foam. Reopened the bottle which sprayed over a three foot area, left bottle to foam out in the sink. This is a Vesuvius of carbonation. If there was a category for carbonation this would get a 10 out of 5. Afterwards things got a bit better. Pours an opaque black, with massive head plus some to spare. Aroma is good and fills the room (probably because beer fills the room...); dark roasted and caramel malt dominating, toffee, hints of chocolate and coffee; I do detect some biscotti here too. Flavor follows, nice sweet roasted and caramel malt, hints of char, chocolate, dark fruit, vanilla. Delicious. Thick creamy body. How do I rate this? It's like an otherwise fabulous house guest who cooks you a gourmet meal and then trashes your house for no obvious reason. I'll knock points off from look since spatters of beer on the wall and floor are not attractive. Otherwise a really superb porter. Intensely enjoyed the aroma and taste.

Bottle at DBGB Kitchen & Bar, New York, NY

A: The beer is jet black in color and poured with a ½ finger high dense beige head that has good retention properties and never faded away.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but a little more complex with notes of vanilla and hints of almonds.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and very smooth on the palate with a moderate to high amount of carbonation. There are some warming sensations from the alcohol in the finish.
O: This beer is very flavorful and rather easy to drink considering the alcohol content. I would have no problem knocking off a 750 mL bottle of this myself.

750ml bottle. Tumbler glass. Shared with Robert & Manolo .Enjoyed on apr´12. Black color. Beige, creamy texture, lasting crown. Coffee & black cocoa to the nose. Sweet toasted malty & creamy palate. Slightly bitter. Full body, soft carbonation. Molasses & dark fruits into the finish. Hints of wood & cocoa with hoppy bitterness on the aftertaste. Flavorful. Pleasant drinkability with an ABV well masked by gentle malts.

I had this on-tap at Max's, poured into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a black color with a half finger of tan head that fades to a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Smooth coffee, roast, and dark chocolate.

Taste: Dark chocolate and roasty coffee. Not quite full enough. Nutty with a bitter finish.

Mouthfeel: Thick and smooth with very little carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: I thought this one was just alright. The mouthfeel was probably the highlight of the beer. The taste needed a little something more.

Draft at local option

A - jet black with a finger of tan head. Decent retention.

S - almond, coffee and vanilla. Literally smells like biscotti dipped in coffee

T - light caramel and coffee then a solid bitter coffee finish. Pretty solid.

M - medium carb and bodied. Very dry finish and can't taste any heat at all.

O - incredible aroma and the beer is exactly what it claims to be. Thus is the best evil twin beer to date. Very drinkable.

Pours a rich, dark brown with thin cap of khaki to brown froth. Scent brings brown sugar sweetness, lightly spiced wafers, dark chocolate and coffee, light but distinct nuttyness, some sweet cream. Taste not as bold as scent dictates, roasty with firm chocolate notes, lingering creamy sweetness, solid notes of coffee, faint dark fruit and light nuttyness. Fuller side of medium bodied, some grainyess to the texture with some smoothness. A nice beer with a good nose but a taste more subtle than expected.

Big thanks to yourefragile for picking this one up. Served in a cervoise. Pours fairly-dark brown with a short off-white head. Decent retention. The nose carries some normal porter notes of roast and chocolate with a touch of coffee in the background. Not really getting any almond or vanilla. Pretty boring; nothing stands out. Flavor is similar. This is nowhere near the imperial version. Body has too much roast. Nothing to set this apart. A good porter, but nothing too special.

First had: on tap at Broad Axe Tavern, Ambler, PA

Wow, what an unexpected treat! Served in a snifter, this beer poured a dark black color, vaguely brown around the edges, with a milk chocolate cap of head that started fizzling out but never completely dissipated; nice lacing left on the glass. Rich aroma of cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, and a mild fruit character. Taste of dark roasted malts up front, with smooth coffee notes; mid-palate brought in an obvious almond profile, with touches of peach; finished off smooth and chocolaty, with this quality coming out more as the beer approached room temperature. Also a floral, somewhat tea-like quality detected, possibly a hop contribution (Willamette?). On the fuller side of medium-bodied, and excellent to savor. I hope to see this one around more often.

A - Black beer with a tan head that faded to a little bit of a ring with nothing else going on.

S - This beer smells awesome. It really smells like a biscotti, it's like I can actually smell wafers. Nice coffee, nuts, vanilla and chocolate.

T - Taste is not quite as good as the smell, it's a little bit flatter, but still nice. Sweet chocolate, little bit of coffee, vanilla, oatmeal, touch of cinnamon maybe.

M - Medium bodied, medium carbonation, pretty smooth.

O - Really liked what this beer tried to pull off and did successfully. Smell alone makes this worth trying.

A: This one pours a dark brown, nearly black, color with a finger of tan head.

S: A big chocolate aroma as well as lots of oatmeal cookie kind of notes. This really does have some biscotti character to it. A little bit of coffee and some cocoa, too.

T: Sweet chocolate and slightly bitter cocoa. There is a very nice oatmeal cookie flavor to it with a bit of coffee and dark chocolate. Slight toffee sweetness with a hint of molasses.

M: Medium in body with a medium carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel.

O: This was a really nice beer. Excellent sweetness and balance with a really nice mouthfeel.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a solid, dark brown color with chestnut highlights and a frothy, foamy, dark beige head. Slow stream of carbonation bubbles throughout the brew. The nose is rich and creamy sweet, with a blend of coffee, biscuit, vanilla, cream, and an overall roasted quality. Flavors are amazing, with milk chocolate and rum characteristics first and foremost. Coffee mocha and creamy background flavors enhance the palate. Light cling on the glass from a smooth, creamy body. The aftertaste is roast coffee and chocolate, with a smooth, velvety finish that kicks a slight bitter coffee to clean it all up. One of the better Porters I have ever had!

This brew was served from the tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a Great Lakes snifter showing the darkest brown coloring. It held a one and a half finger head of lighter brown bubbles. Spots of lacing speckled the glass following a decent retention. No haze or sediment was noted, as the carbonation rose slowly in this this, syrupy beverage. The aroma gave big coffee malts alongside sweeter, more chocolatey ones. Red cherry added sweetness, while hints of vanilla and short bread bolstered the malty background. With warmth came massive plastic phenols, much like freshly cut PVC piping, vodka booziness, and port wine sweetness and fruitiness. Our first impression was that the flavoring was very chocolatey and very roasty. The flavoring opened with huge plastics, metallic coffee grain with heavy roast, aromatic cherry sweetness, light flashes of alcohol, and dark chocolate syrups. The middle peaked with genuine dark chocolate bite, souring metallic yeast, white sugar sweetness, and fruitiness of baked pears. Smokey char, black coffee bite, leather, and fusel booze wash came to balance any residual sweetness and finish the sip. The aftertaste breathed of chalky grain, drying chocolate malts, heavy roast, and the plastic bite of magic markers. The body was full, and the carbonation was full. There was big froth to the sip, with nice cream and pop on the back. A chalky dryness was left all around the mouth, with a lightly metallic coating, but no proper astringency was palpated. The abv was fine, and the beer was definitely more of a sipper.

Overall, what we liked best about this beer was its boldness. Some of the aromas and flavors were absolutely insane if left alone, but worked and blended nicely with the crazy roast and huge coffee flavoring. That said, the plastics were a bit overdone. The feel also lacked superior slurp or silkiness that would put this beer over the top. If you are looking for the ultimate porter turn to this guy’s older brother, the Imperial Biscotti Break.

A - Pours a dark brown with a two inch light brown head with good retention.

S - Chocolate and coffee.

T - Lots of chocolate, some coffee and light vanilla.

D - Good carbonation and a medium body.

O - Good flavors, not sure if they are biscotti, but still good.

1 pint 9.4 oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into a conical Guinness pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high given the brewery.

Served refrigerator cold. <See appearance notes for details of pour>

A: As soon as I cracked the cap it erupted out of the bottle, and I quickly had to catch it with a glass, but lost some. I side-poured what I could, but had to fetch a second glass due to the foam. I'm pretty sure it's overcarbonated, though perhaps this was in anticipation of aging. Pours a five finger beautiful head of dark tan colour, some cream, pretty good thickness, and incredibly retention (at least ten minutes). Extremely foamy. Colour is a solid black. No visible yeast particles.

Sm: Coffee, espresso, cream, vanilla, milk, hints of nuts (I suppose almonds), roast, and vague hints of chocolate. A mild to moderate strength aroma. A bit weak in strength for the appeal of the notes. It should be bolder and stronger.

T: Cream, delightful rich coffee, hints of chocolate, almond notes (only when I search for them), hints of vanilla, caramelized malt, light roasted barley, a milky note, and dark malts as the foundation. Complex, but not as subtle as I'd like. The vanilla in particular is entirely too weak, and would really help the flavour profile with more balance. Decently balanced, but not built ideally. A bit too tame. Not as rich as I'd like.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with some nice understated dryness. I do wish it was more dry. Hints of cream, but nowhere near enough. This flirts between a porter and a stout (and I've read their history). A touch too thin.

Dr: Very drinkable for the ABV - which it hides extraordinarily well. The notes are nice, but they don't flourish enough. I'd love to try this on nitro. I'd prefer this as a stout. Amp up the roasted barley for the foundation, increase the coarseness and dryness, and add some chocolate. A good beer that could be a great one. Another enjoyable brew from Evil Twin. I'm liking this brewery more and more.
