Notes/Commercial Description:
Did you like Before, During, & After Christmas? Maybe you thought it poured brilliantly, and you loved of the arrogant amounts of hops wowed you. This beer will knock your tongue off, essentially due to the obscene amount of hops that went down this explosive fella. It’s a tour de force in hoppiness and by far the craziest beer made by Evil Twin… but not the last.

Brewed at Fanø Bryghus.

L - Clear gold with a thin cream colored head.

S - Grapefruit, orange peel, diacetyls

T - Diacetyls, grapefruit, hop oils, hot alcohol

F - Sticky, oily, heavy, mild effervescence

O - This brew takes no prisoners. The alcohol is up front and unapologetic. Diacetyls rule the taste profile and never give in to grapefruit notes trying to break through. It's a sipper...perfect for a sub-zero Upstate New York winter's night.

12 oz. bottle, with bottled on date 04/18/2014 printed on the bottleneck. Another new big beer to me from Evil Twin, this one a 13.00% abv DIPA. The label calls this beer one of the craziest beers made by Evil Twin, so we'll see what that's all about.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

A - It pours a bright murky golden orange colored body with one finger of frothy off-white head. Big chunks of sediment floating in the glass. Noticeable carbonation rushing topside from the etching at the bottom of the glass. Yeah, I'd say this one looks pretty damn nice. 4

S - The aroma is, as expected, a big bitter hop bomb - piney, orange marmalade, horseradish, herbal / tea leafy, with a good dose of sweetened caramel malt in there also. 3.5

T - Taste follows the nose - big & bitter, citrusy & juicy. Herbal & sweet with a leafy tea sort of taste going on in there. Fairly balanced with good caramel malt presence.

M - The feel is smooth and clean, especially for such a high abv beer. Not as ridiculously bitter and dry on the finish as I'd anticipated. Sticky, sugary, and malty. Lower carbonation than usual. Easy to drink for the 13.00% abv.

Overall, a nice strong DIPA from Evil Twin. Not the greatest that I've had, but it has enough going on to keep things interesting. Recommended.

I'm astonished at the middling score of this brew here on BA. Perhaps my incredulity comes from drinking a cellar-aged bottle of Molotov Cocktail (about 18 months of aging). But this has got to be one of the ten best beers I've had in years.

Oh, man, the aroma is nice and fruity/florally.

Then flavor in the mouth. Holy cow. It's grapefruit gumball -- as if there were such a thing. And That's why I'm scoring this so highly. It's a one of a kind beer, for certain.

Mouthfeel is crazily syrupy, yet leavened by significant fizz.

It's just elite-quality beer. It's better than the bulk of top IIPA's, like 90 Minute, Dreadnaught, Hop Stoopid, and Lagunitas Sucks.

Had this on tap at my local Liquor Barn.

Poured a very hazy yellow orange with a rich, creamy and long lasting head. The smell is an absolute hop bomb dominated by pine and citrus. The taste is quite similar however the hop bitterness is quite well balanced by the malt. There is absolutely no indication of extreme alcohol content. If I didn't know I wouldn't have thought more than 6-7% ABV. The mouthfeel is very creamy and the finish actually quite smooth. Overall this is just a great beer for anyone who is really into big hops and even bigger ABV numbers.

Evil Twin is Denmark’s answer to “Can Denmark make awesome beers or what?”, and I’m hitting the hardest ABV of their brews that is readily available (they did produce a limited release 17.2% American Double Imperial Stout called “Bozo Beer” however good luck getting one in Australia): Molotov Cocktail. The name in itself conjures up thoughts of my mouth exploding with delight, as well as my nipples*.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Duvel Tulip.

A: Presents an orange body with a crazy amount of yeast particles floating around and a thin white lacing for a head. Doc likes yeast particles, so extra points there. 9/10.

S: Big fruity and floral hops smash my olfactory senses, also noted is a sweet caramel malt base and grapefruit lingering in the background. Smells like an absolute hop fuelled fantasy. 9/10.

T: Very much an amped up version of Bridgeport’s Hop Czar, which I noted as having characters of: Grapefruit, pine resin, and bitter orange hops - upfront, at the back and generally all over the place, these hops are tap-dancing on my tongue. There is also a cloying syrupy sweetness as well, like a tanker full of treacle. I find this a bit too intense, then I look at the label and remind myself that it is 13% ABV, and it’s not that intense for alcohol this high. At least the balance of sweetness to bitterness is even-handed. 8/10.

M: Medium bodied, with a carbonation that is hard to place due to the oiliness of the mouthfeel, it’s not distracting nonetheless. 7/10.

D: Well Evil Twin really lobbed a live grenade onto my tongue with this brew. It made me stand to ask the question “Am I really enjoying this or is it too much?”, then I would take another sip and the answer would invariably be my inner hop lover nodding “Yes to both!” frantically. A beer with caveats then. Whilst it doesn’t destroy my tongue with bitterness like Sixpoint’s Resin, and it doesn’t turn me into a diabetic like Gulden Draak, it comes quite close to doing both. 8/10.

Food match: Sharp cheese platter... or anything with bold flavours really, your tongue will be numb before you finish the glass anyhow.

*Did anyone get my obscure Monty Python “Dirty Hungarian Phrasebook” reference?
