GUSHER! For a long time after I opened my first Biscotti Break (which was a disaster of volcanic gushering), I opened all my Evil Twin (and a few other breweries like Hof Dormaal) beers in the kitchen sink. Then a long period of well behaved ale made me lower my guard. This bottle did not shoot into the air, but had a ferocity of flow that was amazing. In a quick few seconds to run to the sink, I lost 2/3s of the bottle. Eventually:
Poured into a Nostradamus flute, pouring a very hazy, almost opaque caramel amber with a large (but only 2% of the total) white head that had good retention and lacing. Pleasant aroma of bready malt, light saison yeast, stone and citrus fruit, nice. Flavor is Brett, saison yeast, much more subdued stone and citrus fruit. Finishes dry and Bretty with a long aftertaste of the wild yeast, citrus rind and light bittering hops. Light bodied with very active carbonation. A classic Brett inspired saison with an above average, moderately complex fruit component. The wild yeast influence was a bit beyond my preference, but well within the style expectations. A good deal for the price in a 22oz, bomber, perhaps not so much for 7 ounces of actual saison in the glass. My floor was sticky and drunk all night. Back to opening beer in my sink….

Straight pour from a 22oz bottle to an oversized wineglass (HF stemware); no dating or freshness from what I could see, but this was purchased a bit over a month ago and from what I gather this beer is likely 6-9 months old, give or take. Maybe? Maybe. Not worried.

Appearance (4.5): Gushes like a motherfucker. Crazy eggshell foam fills the glass, showing amazing retention (it just will not die down, for crying out loud), covering a tangerine-orange body that is PERFECTLY hazy. As the head FINALLY recedes, it leaves wide, lazy splotches of lace all over the place. Crazy-ass head.

Smell (4.5): Juices like a motherfucker. Crazy pineapple sherbet and peppery funk, showing some moist earth and hay tones mixed in with everything for that rich, sweet earthiness and odd funk that people call “the barnyard.” Fresh basil, papaya, and candied oranges flesh out the sweet, fruity dimension: straight-up tropical-ass brett. Damn.

Taste (4.25): Funks like a motherfucker. Peppery funk with some medicinal phenols. Lemon flesh and rind show their faces, along with some old pineapple upside-down cake—you know when the fruit gets overripe and the cake is a little questionable, but you eat it anyway? Like that. There’s a good, peppery, funky twang on the finish . . . moderately bready: wheat bread toast attempts to fill out some of the body amidst all that funk.

Mouthfeel (3.75): An easy, dry feel, and almost tannic, with a drying funk. Modest carbonation characterizes the feel (guess there isn’t much left after all that gushing), with a lush foaming action and a modest tingle—pretty nice. It’s got a very good feel, but somewhat off-style.

Overall (4.25): A saison? Maybe. A brett beer? Most definitely. So, so bretty, and done ridiculously well: the aroma is FANTASTIC. I would definitely purchase this again—for the $10 pricetag, you’d be hard-pressed to find such a bretty beer done so tastefully. Overall, it’s relatively light on the saison characteristics (spice? hay? hops? just brett, huh? it’s entirely possible that they just got bulldozed by the tropical funk)—but as a brett story, this is great.

Similar bubbling out of the bottle like a previous rank. Big carbonation and big white lacing got initial smells of citrus, apple, less cinnamon than the sister "beaster bunny". Has some subtle fruity, earthy yeast notes in the smell and taste but fairly thin mouthfeel that doesn't linger very long. Kind of boring without much sweetness or bitterness

gushed out of the bottle.. thankfully i had a glass handy but it kept gushing out even after i was able to fill the glass with foam. what i was able to get in the glass was a ton of yeast and an orangey pour.. obviously tons of white foam which did leave tons of lacing behind. smells of lemons, jasmine, pepper, brett. the flavor is way more subtle than its scent, but you definitely get a nice funky brett profile throughout. a wonderful tasting saison, nice earthy bitterness, sweet malty backbone, and flower petals. medium body and medium amount of carbonation (thought it'd be higher considering it was a gusher).

if it weren't for it pretty much exploding everywhere, this would've been a extremely pleasant experience. the beer itself was lovely, so i can only recommend to pick it up. after reading other peoples reviews, seems like not many others had the gusher problem. oh well

500ml bottle into a tall tulip

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden color with three fingers of fluffy white head. Great retention and lacing.

S: Lots of Brett funk upfront, musty and barnyardy. This beer remains fairly fruity, though. Stone fruits come out with some lemon peel and slight ginger. Peppercorn is very faint.

T: Pineapple and stone fruit sweetness comes out with a hint of funky Brett. Fairly straight-forward with only a hint of funk and spice.

M: A bit on the thick side with moderate carbonation.

O: The aroma is amazing, but the taste is merely average. I'd like a beer that is drier with some of the fruity and funky character from the aroma.

Poured into a Three Floyds tapered glass. Label says Best Before 2015.

A- Pours a hazy light golden color with a towering three finger cream-colored head that retains a good while before plateauing down to a 1/4 inch head. Fluffy, sudsy lacing that's non-resilient. When the bottle is emptied, white murky sediment is seen floating to the bottom of the glass.

S- Crisp barnyard aroma with noticeable Brett. Equal parts musty and citrusy with notes of lemongrass, pineapple and peach. Slightly effervescent.

T- Nice Bretty flavor with a bit of tartness and funk. Tangy and somewhat bitter. Refreshing and citrusy. Alcohol is pretty well masked. Mild spice notes.

M- Medium-high carbonation suits the wild characteristics of the flavor. Tight and snappy with a light body.

O- Though it doesn't necessarily excel, this is a classic example of a funky saison.

Bomber bottle, purchased in Peeksklill, NY $11.99. "Best Before 2015" on the label

Pours clouded lighter tangarine/amber/golden, under an intiially huge med. khaki head, that slowly fades to a thicker foam, gauzy sheets of fine lacing.

Lemon, honey and pepper on the nose.

Dry, flavorful, over loaded with citric juices, lime and loads of pepper. Carbonation on the high side. Crisp, moderatly tart and bright. Brett showing nicely, with some light funk, but mostly crisply and with more puckeringly dry/citric character.

Lovely beer, go get some

a: This was a very hazy golden straw color. It poured with a massive rocky head that kept growing for almost a full 5 minutes. It gradually faded, leaving behind large clumps of lace.

s: Nicely dominated by plenty of peppery brett. Hints of yeasty lemons and apricots along with lots of funky, wet grains.

t: Extremely dry overall. I tasted lots of fresh zesty lemon up front. The long drawn out finish is all about the brett; spicy and peppery.

m: Very active, fizzy carbonation over a medium body.

o: Very nice saison overall, reminiscent of pig nun from de Proef. It's been awhile since I've had a funky saison, this is really hitting the spot. Last thought, the label mentions honey but I couldn't find any.

Purchased in January 2013 for $11.99. Bottled had a best before 2014 date. Poured into a large wine glass. Bottle had been stored on side.

A - Huge white 3-finger head, rocky, fluffy. Almost champange carbonation. Honey colored, slightly cloudy. Head lasted throughout glass. Some nice lacing.

A - Definitely some barnyard funk.

T - Clean and bright, dry and yeasty, some bitter hops at the end.

MF - Fizzy, almost a champagne like feel

O - One of the more quaffalbe saisons. Would have rated higher if not for the excessive head.

22 ounce bomber poured into a Gouden Carolus chalice. Fluffy, white head, high retention on a clear golden body. Soapy, suddsy lacing. Aroma includes tart green apples, slight malt sweetness, some banana and some beautiful Belgian yeast. Taste follow suit with some peppery spice on the back of the tongue and a bit of earthy funk. Overall, highly drinkable and quite tasty.

On Tap at the Trestle Inn in Philadelphia. Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Poured a pale yellow with about 1/2 a finger of white head that quickly dissipated.

Smell: A bit of funk, yeast, and that sort of rustic farmhouse smell that you would expect from a saison.

Taste: The brett funk hit me first of all, but it wasn't over powering, and complemented the other flavors well. After brett, I tasted tart cherries, white pepper, banana, and lots of yeast. A very tight and lively finish.

Appearance: Very drinkable and well carbonated. Medium body.

Overall: Much better than I expected and very enjoyable. I know the price is expensive, but I would definitely get it again.

22 ounce bottle - $13.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a clouded, darkish amber body with a lofty, airy crest of whitish suds.

Smell: Honeyish, faintly toasty malts with the most prominent note additions being mint leaf, melon juice, something akin to pickled ginger, citric tropical fruit, a splash of Orangina, peppery spices, wrapped in phenols and a noted mustiness.

Taste: Some slightly sweet honey stretched over dry, day-old toasted biscuit tops. The sweetness quickly recedes. Then, the remaining flavors don't simply unfold leisurely, they come rushing in all at once: spearmint, melon juice, citrus blossoms, grapefruit, white pepper, faux ginger, sandalwood, cantaloupe, clean sweat, With each sip, gulp, whatever, the flavors just come pouring in like idiots shoppers streaming into a Wal-Mart on Black Friday -- ah, Christ, somebody just trampled the melons and kept on running to the toy aisle! Dry, phenolic finish. Gets a bit tangier, citric, and gingeresque as it warms.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. High carbonation, but it soon tapers off.

Overall: While not nearly good enough for me to change my saison allegiance, it's still a solid, brett-infused saison, albeit a bit tough on the ole wallet.

Pours a pale gold color. Cloudy. Very large white head. Hard to pour because of it. Big clumps of bubbles stick all over the glass. Aroma is lemons, funk, herbal hops and fresh pale malt. The brett is quite good. It's a medium strong, relatively clean funk that plays nicely with the malt and other flavors well. There's also a bit of an earthy Belgian yeast note in there. The taste doesn't quite come together as well. It starts mildly sweet before dying out and adding a tangy lemon flavor and a good bit of hop bitterness in the finish. Some spice. A good deal of sweet pale malt flavor. Mouthfeel is full and creamy for a saison. Very soft. Good beer but not my favorite beer from Evil Twin, though those imperial stouts make for a pretty high bar.

A - Cloudy golden-orange, finger of frothy white head. Fades normal.

S - Pilsner and grainy malts, Brett, funk, Belgian yeast, coriander, lemon zest, grapefruit, citrus, pine and floral hops.

T - Sweet pilsner and grainy malts, Belgian yeast, coriander, lemon zest, Brett, some funk, grapefruit, citrus, pine, floral hops, some mild bitterness, some tartness.

M - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a dry, tart, funky, and lightly sour finish.

D - Nicely balanced. The brett adds some great complexity to the base beer.

Picked this up at City Beer Store for 11.99. Best before date of 2015.

Pours a cloudy golden color with a thin crop of mousse-like white foam. Good retention and lacing evident. Aroma is a mix of funky/sour with leather, lemon warhead tartness, moist earth. Crusty sourbread and a dash of peppery spice. Initial tart citrus fruit flavors bleed into a quick saltine cracker in the middle followed up with an herbal rye breadiness on the finish. Beneath it all lies a definite, subtle funkiness that I'd peg as a sharp, pungent cheese. It's modest but adds a nice layer of intrigue to the beer. Carbonation and body seem appropriate for the style though I'd like to see a bit more bristle in the bubbles department.

Overall a solid beer but it is lacking in depth/complexity as far as a Saison w/ Brett goes. Perhaps it'll improve with time though it's certainly enjoyable now.

With such complexity, strength, and whimsy- this oddly compelling beer brings hops, sour, and earth together in an orgy of decadence and irresistibility.

Straw-like and lighlty golden in appearance, it's hazy appearance is testament to its unfiltered taste and strong hop content. Capped with a creamy eggshell off white head, the beer retains its head very well and laces delicately along the snifter.

Citrus and pungent scents mingle above the glass and entice the nose with grapefruit, citrus peel, fresh cut grass, leather, dried wood, limes, and sea air. The underlying dry biscuit scent is lightly crusty, thinly honey-like, and with mild starch. Similarly a peppery scent of fennel teases the nose heading into taste.

A dry malty taste opens with light caramel and honey and introduces the taste of fennel seed, just before the hop and earthen funk seeps into the middle palate. That's where the dry fruit taste of orange peel, white grapefruit, lemons and limes are less than zesty but seem dehydrated and concentrated in earthy fruit taste. Accompanying sea brine, drying woods, damp sod, and leather all add complexity to the fruity taste before heading into finish. A late dryness of sandalwood, citrus pith bitterness, and white pepper close the taste briskly and earthen.

Creamy-dry to start, there's an infussed airy quality that burrows deep in the starchy biscuit malt textures but lightens the palate and prepares the palate for a powdery, earthy, dried wood tannin mouthfeel that glided just above the taste buds and dives into a semi-clean bitterness, earthen dryness, and alcohol warmth that rewards both IPA lovers and fans of sour ales alike.

The bitter and sour interplay that both hops and wild yeast provide is a delicate and challenged taste that favors those of sophisticated palate and discerned taste. Though not for the faint of heart, there's something charming and rustic here that cannot be denied.

Surprisingly decent saison, smooth with a honey finish. Recently purchased bottle. Light coloured body, slightly spicy and in no way funky aroma. Good drinkability, does not even need the honey to be a good saison, and it would have been not as sweet.

On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a light orange with large white head. Foamy and fizzy, OK retention.

S: Definite Brett, leather, fermented orange marmalade.

T: Orange bubblegum with some Brett funk, some stone fruit, apple at times. A lot going on.

M: Lightly sour. Frothy, soft carbonation, medium-bodied. Fairly astringent.

O: A good and interesting saison, I enjoyed trying it. Price is a problem for sure, but fans of weird funky Bretty beers should like this.

Parlor City has been cycling various Evil Twins through the tap. So far, all are great.

Pours a bright cloudy yellow with a nice white head.

Nose is lemony, grainy hits of yeast.

I understand this has Brett in it. That really adds some nice twist. Tastes nice and lemony with a good spicy yeasty kick. Semi-funky. Lemon tends to the peel side and is balanced with a sweetness.

A good stickiness in the mouth feel adds a final facet to this enjoyable drink. A fine farmhouse it is.

Poured into a Stone IRS glass. Hazy, straw color with foamy white head that lasts a bit then quickly disappears, leaving a very thin layer behind. Brewed with one of my personal favorites, Brettanomyces. Nose is lemon, straw, slightly sweaty/funky, some apples and some bready yeast notes. The taste is very lemony up front. Almost more lemony than lemons. That quickly gives way to a funky barnyard taste with tropical fruits like mango. There's some bready, malty tastes in the back and a strong yeasty taste more in the foreground. Some flavors of tart green apples and even a little bit of cherry in there. Delicious. It is very carbonated but not in an overwhelming way. Its very drinkable for something so funky. I am not usually a fan of saisons but a lot of new ones seem to be growing on me. If I get the opportunity to pick up another of these I will and I'll sit on it for a bit to see where the Brett goes. It tastes like its still alive and kicking and it has a long journey ahead of it.

Pours a cloudy golden color with a nice white head. Citrusy nose with some straw, pineapple, light melon, and a pleasant dryness. A hint of spice, some bready malt, and as it sits, lemon drop candies. The flavor is a bit more bread/malt forward. Some citrus peel, straw, lemon, yeast, and light spice. A hint of tropical fruit and dry on the finish. Really nice and easy drinking.

Draft at The Farmers' Cabinet in Philadelphia, PA.

Pours a very hazy, light golden orange color with golden yellow edges and a two finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of lace left behind.

Slightly funky, earthy aroma with subtle acetic vinegar undertones along with funky barnyard yeast notes.  Musty and sweaty with a strong citrusy wheat presence. Hints of lemon, musty funk, earthy wood and peppery spice.

Full bodied with a slightly creamy mouthfeel that compliments the tart barnyard funkiness really well.  Slightly vinegary but not acetic or solvent-like.  Earthy, funky yeast with some brett and a subtle lactic presence along with zesty, peppery spice and sweet citrus.  Really well balanced and very quaffable considering the complexity.  I enjoyed this beer immensely.

Slightly hazed golden in color with a creamy white head that leaves ribbons and lots of sticky lace down the glass.

Aroma is a nice combination of grass, hay, earth, a little bit of bubble gum, yeast, and floral hops. Very nice.

The flavor is similar to the aroma, with good amounts of grass, earth, and floral characters leading the way, along with a bit of sweet bubblegum, and bread. Very nice and incredible drinkable. No alcohol presence.

Medium bodied with moderate-high carbonation, and somewhat creamy.

Very nice, incredibly drinkable saison, though probably not worth the price point.

Served in a tulip glass at the Beer Bistro in Chicago.

Served with a two finger pillowy clean white head and a hazy golden body. The unmistakable smell of Brett-induced funk, with floral and fruit notes on the nose. Opens with the taste of flora and citrus, transitions to earthy, brett funk in the midpalate,and finishes dry and just a bit tart with strong notes of pear. On the lighter side of medium bodied however still features a fairly creamy mouthfeel. A very enjoyable and well-balanced brew.

Pours a bright yet cloudy pale orange color with a short yet dense pure white head. A bit more orangey than your typical saison.

The aroma is quite sweet, has kind of an orangey candy type scent. Some subtle tart apple and farmhouse funk, mainly hay. Its a nice aroma but definitely sweet.

The taste has an earthy sourness that was not picked up in the aroma. Kind of sharp bitter unripe orange. There is a brightness from the malt and floral notes. Some hay and funk and an odd metallic note. The bitter/sour is too sharp for my liking.

The feel is light and fizzy, crisp. Good balance for the most part but does end with a rough bitterness.

A flavorful saison but the sour/bitter is a bit too striking; needs to be more mellow. Its worth a purchase but not sure a re-purchase.
