Pours motor oil pitch black color with a massive 2 finger thick foamy dark tan head that was full of tiny bubbles and faded very slowly, leaving outstanding foamy lacing coating the sides, rings as it went down and a layer on top. This head really built up fast for a stout and cascaded over the rim like a surge of expanding foam.

Smell is like ashy charred malt, coffee beans, vanilla, chocolate syrup, molasses, and burnt grains. There is a chocolatey sweetness that cuts through the roasted/burnt grains and makes this inviting like most other Evil Twin Imperial Stouts.

Taste is very similar to the nose, with coffee beans, molasses, caramel, charred/burnt malt, vanilla, ash or charcoal, chocolate syrup, toffee, dark chocolate, burnt grains, herbs like tea leaf or dry floral hops, and light booze that trails off with a bitterness and sweetness. The aftertaste is like smokey cocoa powder, black licorice, espresso and dark rum with a dash of vanilla in a thick, watery cold coffee. Nice complex flavor with a variation of all the before mentioned components that changes slightly as it warms, bringing out more chocolate and molasses/syrup as it sits and remains very tasty.

Mouthfeel is slick and watery for such a heavy, viscous brew, with mild carbonation and a slightly bitter aftertaste. A real Christmas treat, this was another very enjoyable stout from Evil Twin that I will seek out again if for no other reason then the fact that name of this beer is a good as the taste.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer. Leaves some decent lacing.

Smell: A roasty and toasty dark malt forward aroma with hints of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Roasted malt with upfront hints of dark chocolate, coffee beans, burnt toast, biscuit, grains, caramel, yeast, and smoke. Sweet hints of molasses and cream. Dark fruit hints of cherry, raisin, and fig. Subtle earthy hop hints. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely roasty and toasty dark malt driven taste with some good notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Roasted barley malt with upfront notes of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, grains, caramel, smoke, and yeast. Sweet taste of molasses along with some notes of cream. Subtle dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, and cherry. Light background notes of earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, bitter, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is fairly minimal.

Overall: A pretty good take on an Imperial Stout. Good dark roasty malt flavors with a nice drying bitterness.

Appearance - Pours blackened like a good stout should while the head is a cocoa-powder color that peaks at a finger's width and displays fair retention. The head dies down to a consistent layer of suds across the surface while sporadic spots of lace decorate the glass.

Smell - The aroma is dominated by mild notes of anise; not to say the smell is weak, but rather this anise character is of an assertive but controlled nature. Hints of chocolate and smokey roasted malt round out the bouquet.

Taste - More smokey on the tongue than the aroma led on. Charred malt that hints at campfire wood and roasted coffee, rounded out by a distant milk chocolate sweetness. Anise comes through almost without effort , delivering a near numbing experience in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Near full body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, silky start before a drying alcohol finish.

Overall - It's been a while, but reminds me a bit of Clown Shoes' Impy that has changed names twice; Vampire Slayer but now Undead Party Crasher. That's my first impression. In any event there's a bit too much campfire meets anise for my liking. Anyone who enjoys the former will absolutely love this one.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 8/19/2014. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark brown head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, licorice, raisin, toast, dark bread, leather, tobacco, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, licorice, raisin, toast, dark bread, leather, tobacco, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, licorice, raisin, toast, dark bread, leather, tobacco, light smoke/char, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, dark fruits, and earthy hop notes; with a nice roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Russian imperial stout. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt, dark fruit, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

S - Cola, carrots, and licorice.

T - Smooth and creamy. Milk chocolate, dark roast latte, molasses, light gingerbread and licorice, booze, and burnt toast. Dark fruits, booze, burnt espresso beans and bitter herbs through the finish.

M - Medium body

O - A nice AIS on the creamer side of the style.
