Poured into snifter; ruddy chestnut in color, translucent in light. Minimal off-white head that fades after a few moments into a thin ring of tiny foam and some spotty lacing.
Smells of sweet bready malt and candied fruit, booze.
Taste is very sweet, I'm glad I have some 3 year cheddar here to cut it between sips. The sweetness fades into some boozy bread flavors, finishing off with some piney hops.
Mouthfeel is medium-thick and slick.
Overall, this barleywine is a bit one-dimensional but it's drinkable and relatively tasty.

Poured out a ruddy brown color with small off white head approaching beige.

Alcohol the most noticeable aroma, a cigarette ashtray comes across as well.

Ooof, tons of alcohol noticeable on the palate. It really is the dominant aspect of the beer.
A little bit of a thicker, more syrupy mouthfeel, but it still isn't getting me to a point where I like much of this beer. Alcohol dominates any hops or malt flavors. Caramel, raisins, prunes, rubbing alcohol. Pretty bitter, but can't discern if that is from the hops or something else.

Thanks to Reno Dave for bringing this bottle to the Reno bottleshare. No thanks to Dave Hurley of the El Dorado casino (sports bar suit guy) for renigging on their word allowing our bottle share so they could purportedly keep the BMC distributor happy.

This one is a pass for me, glad I got to try it without buying. Would not recommend.

12oz bottle - this must be Batch 3, then, unless they made one that came in a 500ml serving size.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, dark bronzed amber hue, with one flabby finger of puffy, tightly foamy, and somewhat bubbly tan head, which leaves a low band of drifting snowbank lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of sweet caramel malt, hard toffee, sharp grapefruit, lemon, and orange citrus rind, dark, berry-like orchard fruit, musty pine needles, and a simmering alcohol astringency. The taste is rather bitter pine resin, serrated leaf, and stripped-down citrus oils, a backed-down grainy bready caramel malt backbone, an acrid berry fruitiness, and further earthy, floral, and well-perfumed hops.

The carbonation is fairly laid-back, but still adequately supportive in its low-fi fizziness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and not particularly smooth, that twin blast of bitterness and booze kiboshing that. It finishes off-dry, the malt and various fruit incarnations putting up the good fight, but in an eventual losing cause.

Not a lot of typical barleywine characteristics floating around this one, even for the American style, as this is all about the bitter and acrid - the musty and malty, very much less so. Interesting to try, and ultimately not that difficult to drink for the hop-inclined, after a short acclimatization period, that is. This wants recognition - I just don't know how or what to recognize it as.

I don't generally like barleywines but this one is worth getting- well balanced malt sweetness with a little dryness from the hops. Surprisingly not cloying as most barleywines are. There's some dark fruit in there but nothing overwhelming. Just a nice warming beer.

Bottled 3/12/14

Pours an effervescent orange with a finger of cream colored head. Very good lacing & head retention

S: A little bit of breadyness. leafy hops as this warms & orange peels & faint boozey notes

T: Breadyness, dryness, plumyness & a bit of toffee up front & touch of tangerine. Toffee & woody hops as this warms, a bit of pineapple as well. Finishes with pineapple, passion fruit, leafy, woody, & herbal hops & dry

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, good balance

A decent barley wine, seems as much an English Barley Wine as an American... Good, but too expensive to buy again...

Served from bottle into a Green Man snifter. Poured a murky yellowish brown with a two finger khaki colored head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, caramel, caramel hop, wood, and subtle vanilla. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus, caramel, wood, alcohol, dark chocolate, and caramel hop. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this a fairly good brew. I really hate to say it, but this one was a little too boozy on the flavor for my liking. There were lots of things going in this one, but the booze just stole the show. Really unfortunate that was the case. Still not bad, but I doubt I could drink a full 750 mL bottle myself.
