Notes/Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Poured from a 22oz. bomber into a pint glass.

A: Just like most stouts dark black with a thin ring of mocha head.

S: Could smell the malt characters and coffee

T: Sweat... very very very sweet. Over-powering to my palate. I love coffee forward but the sweetness in this was off putting.

M: Smooth but a bit thin.

O: Great to try but too sweet for my tastes.

500ml bottle served in a snifter glass.

A: Pours a deep black color. Creamy and oily. Forms a small and very creamy and thin bubbled beige to brown head. Small retention and some spotty lacings formed and left in the glass. Some brown chunks can be see floating on the bottom of the glass, mainly in the last pours

S: Traditional Imperial Stout in the nose: Strong notes of roasted malts, chocolate malts, coffee beans, licorice, brown bread, brown sugar, vanilla and oak. Some notes of alcohol in the very end. Sweet and balanced

T: Follows the notes: Sweet upfront. Strong notes of roasted malts, chocolate malts, dark chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, brown bread. Yeasts are quite bready. Hops are grassy. Good bitterness in the end (roasted and hoppy). In overall, a smooth and balanced bittersweet taste

M: Heavy, creamy and molasses body. Sweet and bready upfront. Bitter roasted aftertaste

O: Great drinkability. Excellent Imperial Stout. Smooth and pleasant. Masterpiece

Bottle. Pours black with thick head. Aromas is vanilla, coffee, caramel. Taste is heavy on the vanilla, the coffee fades to a background note. Nicely balanced sweetness (marzipan?) in a heavy stout. Balances sweetness with the bitter coffee notes just perfectly.

Can’t wait to try the BA version.

Pours opaque black with 1/4 of brown head that quickly fades to absolutely nothing.

Smell is of the darkest, most decadent chocolate, black coffee with a hint of vanilla. Like a big, chewy, sticky, black, fudge brownie.

Taste is black coffee up front with dark chocolate and some vanilla on the back end. Just a hint of alcohol bite.

Mouthfeel is thick and heavy bodied with almost no carbonation.

As advertised: a delicious chocolatey coffee break with some pop. Impressive.

22oz bottle to my FW Snifter glass – 12/07/13

Big thanks to Doppelbockulus for this one! A big want of mine.

A: Blackened brown body that is completely opaque. Looks pretty dark in the glass with an oily sheen on the surface and a few streaming bubbles present. Takes some vigor to conjure up the bubbly head of dark mocha whip. Quickly fades out to a swirl leaving light ribbons of stick strewn down the glass.

S: Barista grade coffee with blackened grains, dark chocolate, molasses, dark caramels, and brown sugar. Smells deliciously sweet with some alcohol presence on the nose. Getting a bit of vanilla spice mixed in as well. Need to let this one warm up as the nose really blossoms.

T: Fudgy brownie and vanilla pudding with brown sugar molasses. Coffee is there but significantly less intense than the nose. Oh this is delicious! Dark caramelized malts with subtle hints of anise spice mixed in. There is a moderate to high level of bitterness that just cuts through all the sweetness and really saves this from being an insulin bomb. The alcohol is warming and present but pretty tame considering the size of this brew. Has hint of smoke and an earthy mineral finish to it. Decadence in a bottle and a solid step up from the nose. My kind of dessert beer. Sweet and flavorful yet balanced by the bitterness.

M: Full bodied with a creamy texture and relatively high amount of bitterness that cuts through the density. Slight warming sensation with a slick oily coating on the finish.

D: Meets expectations. Deliciously balanced with layers of complexity. Will seek out again.
