Notes/Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Pours black with a mocha head. Aroma is waaay too alcoholic; strong alcoholic fumes on top of some caramel, wafers, milk chocolate, nutty and a little roasty coffee. Alcohol shows up in the flavor way too strongly along with some caramel, nutty, wafers, chocolate, and a little coffee. Cloyingly sweet and and alcoholic. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and dead flat. Overall, drain poured my 8 ounces of this, gave the rest of the bomber to my roommate. This one is not for me, won't drink again.

22oz bottle into a red wine glass.

Appearance: Pours black with a big frothy dark tan head. Some light brown lacing mixes with the huge legs. Looks like a big stout.

Smell: That beautiful, boozy aroma of undercooked pastry with marzipan that you sometimes get in huge RISs. Not as full of aroma or complex as some, but the booziness really amplifies that one intoxicating pastry note. I'd give it under a 4 for being simplistic if it weren't so booming and inviting. A little cocoa comes out with time.

Taste: Sweet and slick up front, with a muddled malty character to it. Long, thick caramel finish that airs out with butty roasted malt. Lingering smokey, roasted malt aftertaste. Some chest warmth, but no solvent-like flavor from the extreme ABV.

The next sip brings some cherry and cola flavor. Not quite as deep or good as the aroma. Deeper into the glass the sweetness really builds up, but it's adequately controlled by the heavy roasted malt influence (the sort of nutty, effervescent roasted malt flavor generally permeates every element).

To be honest, it's a little sweet for me, and while it's eminently complex and well put together, the total package doesn't wow me. I can't give it below a 4 because it's a complex and refined "big RIS" among a nation of unbalanced, overdone alcohol bombs, but I'd still rather drink Alesmith Speedway Stout or Stone IRS for the same kind of thing done better.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied. Slick when it should be creamy. Spot on attenuation; dry, but not very. Perfect carbonation as well (not much, but just enough; great with a big stout).

Overall: Good, even great RIS. Lacks something (a couple flavor elements, a better mouthfeel) to take it into the repeat buy category, but definitely a worthy beer.

Wouldn't recommend going out of your way to hunt this beer down, but definitely give it a try if you happen upon it and like big stouts.
