A few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into the higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all -- it must taste rare!

So much to love about this beer.

Very enticing pour. Nice dark tan head over an opaque black body. Earthy, chocolately notes on the nose. Scrumptious taste. Dark fruits. Heavily roasted malt. Coffee. Sweet chocolate. Even some tobacco. It is however a slow sipper. Thick mouthfeel with an ABV that makes itself known. But overall, its a must try for Imperial Stout fans.

Can into pint glass. Pours a dark brown (black in the glass) with hardly any head. Initial impression is chocolate, caramel, coffee, molasses, and charred oak. Alcohol is quite well hidden. Mouthfeel is slippery-smooth and sticky. Finish is fairly sweet. Overall, an exceptionally enjoyable Imperial Stout.

Great nose! Rich, dark color. Tastes of coffee, lots of chocolate, hint of caramel and dark fruits. Just so dang expensive!

Pretty fantastic.
Smells of leather and smokehouse Almonds with the taste to boot (leather boot of course)
Alcohol isn't overwhelming at all
I'm very impressed

Pint can poured at 50° into a snifter. Beauty brown dense head forms over black liquid - smells pop up right now!
Aroma is great! Brown fudgie, dark roast malt, coffee.
Taste is textured fudge brownie, vanilla, tobacco, dark molasses, a little char, Cuban coffee, a nice alcohol tinge. Finish is comfortably dry and sweet, then up jumps a bitter element that is surprising.,. there’s hops in here!
Thick as it should be, medium carbonation.
Overall, a delicious not over-sweet Saturday night recliner sipper. I’d recommend a medium Nicaraguan cigar with this.,.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a Duvel tulip glass.

L - I have never seen a more perfect example of a good-looking Imperial Stout. Truly pitch black beer that absorbs all light, with a brown head that seems to have burgundy highlights. The head is several inches thick at the initial pour fluffy and rocky. It slowly faded to a thick sheet across the surface and plenty of sticky sheeting.

S - Delicious stout aromas of roasted grains, coffee, chocolate, and smoke. There is also a restrained amount of fruit from fermentation and perhaps hops, and just a bit of dried fruits like raisins and prunes. Actually a restrained amount of aroma for this style. It does not leap out of the glass at you.

T - The flavors are delicious and extremely rich: chocolate milk, fudge, espresso, a hint of smoke. No noticeable hops or yeast components.

F - Thick, creamy body, but it is fairly dry and does not coat the mouth after the swallow. Moderate carbonation with a slightly spritzy impression. Hops bitterness must be very high, because the overall impression is balanced, despite the huge malt chewiness. Strong alcohol presence, but it does not feel hot or boozy among all the other strong elements, despite the 12% ABV.

O - This is a huge, delicious, but surprisingly balanced Imperial Stout. It may be the most flavorful, impressive example I've had that was not barrel aged. I can only imagine how heavenly this beer would be after aging in an interesting barrel.

Appearance: Pours a full jet black color with a massive dark tan head that lingers forever. SRM of 24. (4.50)

Aroma: Strong aromas of bittersweet chocolate and cocoa upfront, airy coffee roast, with a slightly bitter and leathery aroma.

Flavor: Strong flavors of chocolate upfront, some charred brown sugar sweetness. This follows with coffee roast bitterness that lingers through the middle and then into an airy roast bitterness that is clean off the end.

Feel: Medium to heavier bodied, but lighter than you'd expect. Decent carbonation. Creamy, soft with a lingering bitterness.

Overall: Actually a pretty good American Imperial Stout here. Strong cholate flavors with some of the charred brown sugar flavor probably from the muscovado sugar they use here. But it also has a strong and robust coffee roast bitterness that gives an airy and bitter note to dry the beer significantly. Complex and comes through for a very drinkable beer for 12%.

L: Poured from a 16oz can into a pint bottle - huge amount of head left behind on this one. Jet black, can't see through it at all.
S: Getting aromas of dark malts as well as slight chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, burnt brown sugar, not picking up on the fudgy chocolate as much as I expected.
T: Definitely malt heavy but then the chocolatey fudge comes into play which somewhat balances the notes aside from the dominating malts, getting also the dark fruits (plums raisins) in there well with molasses and slight vanilla to smooth it out.
F: Medium to heavy bodied, easy to drink. ABV does hide well. medium carbonation.
O: This is the second time I'm reviewing this beer but I dont love this beer however the malts may dominate the beer but the chocolate fudgy part are almost on par with the malts. It is complexed but the malts tend to dominate this beer. Worth a try in my book.

From a 16oz can snagged a few weeks ago at The Lazy Dog (Londonderry) for $4.99....
Into a lahge sniftah she goes....

Jet black, opaque and oily she pours, with a thin, creamy, fine, mocha-hued topping. Most of the suds clings to the edge, with a smidge hanging behind in the guise of lace. First whiff brings up some coffee notes, with dark choco riding shotgun. Also has some of an earthy character... Body is medium-plus and chewy, with a smooth, creamy feel.

Flavor is mildly sweet, with a bit of cocoa and mocha. Has some subtle dark choco plus teasingly bitter coffee notes. Also has suggestions of dried dates and figs, with some earthy, slightly floral hop action in the finish. A solid all-around brew.... Prosit!!

16oz can
batch #043
L: jet black body, frothy brown head
S: fudgy chocolate, roasted barley, earthy hops
T: baker’s chocolate, fudge, roasted barley, caramel, pumpernickel bread crust, molasses, tobacco leaf, ash & char, bitter earthy hops
F: full body, ample carbonation, alcohol is well concealed, finishes semi-dry and more astringent & bitter, which I appreciate
O: I love that this isn’t too sweet; it’s a really good Imperial Stout!
