Pours a dark chocolate brown with a half finger beige colored head atop.Aromas of roast,caramel,alcohol dipped dark fruit,a hint of roasted nuts,alot of good stuff going on here.An oily slick feel with flavors that aren't as roasted as I thought,chocolate and caramel notes with dark fruit in the finish,there is some earthy roastedness but it's not in your face.I really like this beer,even better than what I was expecting.

Its a real shame. This was my first taste of anything from Evil Twin. I had not heard of the brewery, had not heard of the beer, so this was new adventure for me.
Honestly, I did not care that much for this beer. Now, its been almost 18 months since I've tasted this and my beer appeptite has changed so much

I will need to re-taste this to do it its honors

Served from bottle into a Mikkeller Teku (semi-proper!). Poured a massively dark red brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark chocolate, subtle coffee, dark fruit, subtle citrus, subtle citrus hop, alcohol, and earth. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, dark fruit, earth, earth hop, citrus, citrus hop, and alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I have had a few Black & Tan brews back before I was reviewing beers and I can honestly say that this is one of the better ones I’ve had. If I am honest the stout portion of this brew definitely dominated this one with all the roastiness and alcohol notes. The ‘tan’ portion did make itself known throughout though with a nice kiss of citrus to help balance it out. I could honestly see this one getting you in quite a bit of trouble if you are not careful. Definitely a better representation of the style and definitely better than the make-shift one a few of us in my tasting group made. Worth your time trying if you get the chance.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing nearly black in the glass. Half finger light brown head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of dark dried and fresh fruit, caramel malt, piney hops, light toasted malt. Flavor starts with pine hops, plums and dried fruit, a thint of toasted malt. Finish develops the toasted malt, chocolate, hints of vanilla and a nice hop bite. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Dangerously well covered alcohol. Delicious.

I was excited to see that Evil Twin had bottled a Yin and Yang; I had made and reviewed my own black and tan from 50/50 Yin and Yang a few years ago. Interestingly, my old review indicated that the toasted malt and stout character overwhelmed the barleywine elements in the two-bottle mix. This bottled version seems to have the opposite flavor progression and is much better balanced. I wish I had bought two of these now, although it was pricey.

A: The beer is nearly jet black in color and has traces of red visible when the glass is held up to a bright light. It poured with a thin layer of large tan bubbles covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of roasted chocolate malts are present in the nose along with some notes of citrusy hops and hints of alcohol.
T: The taste has an interesting mix of sweet chocolate flavors that are contrasted by bitter and citrusy hops.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation with some warming from the alcohol.
O: This beer is rather unique and seems to have interesting properties from both the IPA and stout used to create this blend. It's definitely a beer to sip and savor. The alcohol is well hidden from the taste.

Had this last night with Jeppe at the Max's Baltimore Beer Week event.

I've had both the yin and yang before and liked both of them a lot. I really like the slightly vinous mouthfeel with such an overall pleasant taste. No bad flavors appear. Somehow this "combination" is even better than the individual beers. Smells got a little oak flavor to it which he said is from some special smoke malt he uses in a lot of his heavier beers.

Definitely would seek this out again on draft.

Bottle poured into a BarrelHouse Brewing Co pint glass

A: Pours deep mahogany brown with a frothy light brown head that hangs around for a while before settling and lacing very well.

S: Roasted malt, a little chocolate, some coffee, pine, maybe even a bit floral too, and a little caramel malt sweetness.

T: Roasted malt up front, coffee and a little bittersweet chocolate that comes out as it warms, followed by a big hop hit, loads of pine that lingers, maybe a little light citrusy grapefruit and caramel malt sweetness from the IPA side, plus some earthy burnt toast bitterness.

M: Pretty full body, moderate carbonation.

O: To sum it up in 1 word; intense. The first few sips are strong to say the least, massive bitterness that is damn near overwhelming. As it warms it mellows out and blends fairly well. At 10% + the strength of the flavors going on it can be a real kick in the face, but a hell of an experience.

I picked up a bottle of Evil Twin's Yin & Yang last month for $3.59 at Holiday Market. I haven't had Yang yet since they only had Yin and this one at the store, but I'm interested to see how this black and tan turns out, so lets see how it goes. 2014 Vintage. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label looks nice, it's got a simple and clean design to it, but I don't think it's too eye catching. It poured a nice black color that didn't really let any light come through and it had almost three fingers worth of fluffy and creamy brown head that died down to a thin ring that stayed till the end and it left some patchy rings of lacing behind. This is a very nice looking beer, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart a green hop, green onion and earthy aroma with just a little bit of citrus rind hops showing up in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart some roasted, lightly charred, and somewhat lighter chocolate like aromas. This beer had a nice aroma, but it was a little unbalanced and I wish the green hop and green onion aromas weren't the hoppy aspects that stuck out the most.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but it's more balanced and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and this time the citrus rind hop aspects stick out a little more with no single hoppy aspect seeming to stick out the most. Up next comes a light alcohol flavor that isn't that warming and it goes right into the malts which show up more than they did in the aroma and they impart the same aspect with the roasted malts and chocolate sticking out the most. On the finish there's a higher amount of medium bitterness that lingers a little into the aftertaste along with some hoppy, roasted malts, and chocolate flavors. This was a pretty nice tasting beer, it had good balance, but I wish the hop profile was a little brighter.

M- Fairly smooth, slightly warming, a little crisp, on the thicker side of being medium bodied with a lower amount of medium carbonation. This beer had a pretty nice mouthfeel that worked well with it.

Overall I thought this was a pretty nice beer and I thought it was a good example of the style, you don't see too many pre mixed black and tans especially ones that are on the stronger side, but this one turned out to be a nice beer. This beer had ok drinkability, it was fairly smooth, slightly warming, a little crisp, not too filling and the taste did a nice job at holding my attention, but i think one is enough for me, the bitterness might start to wear on me if I have more than that. What I like the most about this beer was the balance in the taste and the appearance, to me those were the highlights of this beer. What I liked the least about this beer was the aroma, it was pretty unbalanced and I wish the stout aspects showed up more. I would buy this beer again when in the mood for the style and I would recommend it to anyone that wants a black and tan that showcases roasted and hoppy flavors. All in all I was happy with this beer and I ended up enjoying it a little more than just Yin by itself, the IPA brings some balance and complexity that Yin was lacking. This is one of the better Evil Twin beers I've had and so far it's my favorite Black and Tan. Nice job guys, this was a tasty black and tan, keep up the solid work.

12 oz. bottle poured into a Libby stout glass.

Appearance: Pours a pretty solid black with some brown around the edges. Huge tan head that recedes to a covering of film after a few minutes. Lots of spotty lacing.

Aroma: Dark fruits like raisins, some pine, some bitter dark chocolate, and some booze.

Taste: Follows the nose, with the raisins and bitter chocolate very pronounced and some roasted malt backbone. The pine and booze are right there, too.

Mouthfeel: Dangerously drinkable given the high ABV. Heavy, somewhat, but not a sludgefest.

Overall: A monster, this one. I dig it. Basically a black IPA, and a terrific one. Pretty cool that they chose to blend too fairly sophisicated styles for this B&T; you don't see a ton of pre-mixed B&Ts with IPA in the mix. Also nice to see it was brewed in Stratford; I'm guessing at Two Roads? Big ups to the dude at RSVP in Portland for recommending this beast.

Pours pitch black color with a massive 3 finger foamy to creamy tan head that did not budge, dissipating very slowly; it looked like a massive Guinness head with a ton of tiny bubbles in it. A minute later I was able to draw a shamrock in the head since it was still about 2 fingers thick. It left outstanding lacing coating the sides, and when it did start fading it left moon craters - a world class pour from a bottle.

Smells of citrus and piney hops up front, like a Sierra Nevada Torpedo to start, followed by charred wood, burnt grains, caramel, brown sugar, coffee and grapefruit. Hints of cocoa powder and charred sweetness come through for a nice mix of hops and very burnt grains that smells real good and like a traditional black and tan juiced up where the hops are more potent and the char and malts are more dynamic.

Taste is very similar to the nose with the fine balance of charred malts and strong hops that is a mix of charred wood, burnt grains, caramel, brown sugar, coffee, espresso bean grinds, citrus hops, piney hops, grapefruit and a brownie like sweetness that almost seems chewy, which is nice for a stout. The beer dances between charred malts and roasted flavors and a sharp hop or coffee bitterness that is so much more complicated and flavorful than other bottled black & tan's like the Yuengling or Saranac versions. Not knocking those other black & tans, but they are just not on the same level as this brew - this is superior in every way.

Mouthfeel is thick, heavy and chewy, with mild to average carbonation, a heavy body that drinks like a meal and a bitter, smoky aftertaste that is almost dry and chalky. The smoke aspects are a bit too much and seem almost like a smoke beer with the grains so burnt, but it does serve a purpose and completely hide the 10% ABV.

Overall I'd say this is by far the best bottled black & tan that I've ever had and a beer I will seek out and highly recommend. The overall score of 4.5 may seem high, but this is the best in class compared to other beers in the bottled black & tan category.

The front of the label says "Product of Scotland" while on the reverse is says "Produced and bottled by Evil Twin Brewing at BrewDog, Aberdeenshire, Skotland." I guess that in many ways the influence of the Danelaw can still be seen in Scotland.

Anyway, the color looked like a stout and not like most bottled black and tan and tans that I've had, most of which look like thin porters. The very thin head was mostly white with some yellow tinges to it. Some dramatic laces here and there. The smell of pine, brown sugar, some dark rum and a bit of vanilla. The taste was a little off balance: more of a blackened imperial IPA than an imperial stout-imperial IPA 50/50 mix. Not that I'm complaining, because the flavors were bright, clean, and long-lasting: slightly burned dark chocolate, oily espresso, pine, orange zest, crispy pancakes, more darkened sugars. Let it get warm, and after some time the carbonation, which was too sharp at first, will no longer get in the way of these flavors.

That said, I paid $8.00 for a single bottle; I'm not too sure about that element of this Scots-Danish brew.

A: Pours a clear yet opaque dark cola brown with dark amber highlights and light amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a quarter finger tall sudsy light tan head that slowly reduces to a medium sized medium thick patch of larger bubbles and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: There are moderate aromas of dark roasted malts, citrus/grapefruit hops, and pine/resin hops. Light to moderate amounts of alcohol.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of dark roasted and charred malts with some dark fruit (plum and fig) sweetness. There are slightly lighter notes of chocolate and espresso. All of the malty flavors are followed by moderate to strong flavors of citrus/grapefruit and pine/resin hops. Moderate to strong amounts of bitterness in the finish which lingers for a short while.

M: Just shy of full bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: I have had both of the base beers for this separately and have made my own version of this black & tan at home but this would be the first time I've had the black & tan from the brewery - though I do not remember the beer being this big in the past (I wish the alcohol was a little more well hidden). This is a big beer and needs to be sipped and enjoyed slowly.

I kicked the keg--very nice head. Large spots for lace. Dark brown where no light passes.

Dark chocolate smell. A bit of chalk as well.

Very creamy--almost like drinking a dark chocolate milkshake. I can detect a touch of alcohol in the swallow. The aftertaste shows some bittering hop. Delicious.

A - Black-dark brown, when held up to light there is a nice ruby-garnet hue, two fingers beige head, great lacing.

S - Confectioner's sugar, toffee, pine, grapfruit, hint of Tootsie Roll.

T - Sweet malt, residual sugars, mixture of juicy/bitter hops, touch of cocoa powder on the back end.

M - Quite smooth, medium body, moderate-low carbonation.

O - A lot sweeter than expected, doesn't reach the cloying point, but gets fairly close. Don't get much of the Yin imperial stout. I would prefer a 75% Yin, 25% Yang blend.

On tap at the Blind Pig in Champaign, IL

A: Pours a dark brown, nearly black color with a bit of red around the edges. A two finger white head forms, and recedes in a second.
S: Piny, resiny hops up front. Bitter grapefruit. The bitterness intermingles with the obvious roasted malt. Coffee and chocolate mixed with grapefruit aromas. Blah.
T: Similar to the nose. Piny, resiny hops up front. Bitter grapefruit. Then the hops mingles with roasted malt. Sticky, resinous pine and grapefruit. Assertive coffee and chocolate flavors with hops is not good. Also some soy sauce flavors. A mess.
M/D: A full, resinous, and sticky body. Moderate carbonation that is sticky, oily, and soapy. Not easy to drink at all. High alcohol and the hops and malt mix is not enjoyable at all.

This is a mess, and typical, not only of the dreaded and stupid Black IPA, but the "Imperial Black IPA." This was not enjoyable for me at all...

First off, for a black & tan this is boss, Pours like a stout (33% blend) and it smells hoppy like your IPA. Call this an imperial black IPA, because thats pretty much what it is. The aroma has plenty of hoppy notes with pine and citrus melding into a slightly smokey malt profile, In the taste, stout flavor with the base of charcoal and coffee. Gives way to a citrusy, grapefruit flavored hop note. Slight alcohol tingles the throat, but really pretty well hidden alcohol content. This is the granddaddy of Black&Tans. Don't be afraid, just be prepared.

Appearance: Pours with a finger and a half of slightly off white head which settled in slowly to the edges of the glass. Poured with a dark brown color but sits in the glass. Active carbonation is very low.

Smell: Booze, toffee, and black licorice on the front. Milk chocolate, lightly roasted coffee grounds, and some bright hops make up the body. Caramel malts and saturated citrus really carry through on the back end. Interesting transitions from the imperial stout to the DIPA.

Taste: Wow all sorts of things going on here. Medium bodied roasted malts, toffee, licorice, and brown sugar sweetness blast the drinker. The malts take a slightly darker turn with heavier coffee and burnt notes on the body. But then the IPA comes in, delivering heavy caramel malts and saturated citrus notes. Lingering bitterness and licorice sweetness lingers on the finish.

Mouthfeel: I'll give this blended beer credit, you can certainly distinguish the separate beers here. Roasted stout front yields to a malt forward DIPA finish.

Overall: Well, I'm glad I gave this style a go. I would like to try a small version, maybe giving me a different experience. Interesting to say the least.

11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap acquired at Wally's Wine in West Hollywood, California, and served into a New Belgium stem-goblet in me gaff in Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are high; I've had both the yin and the yang individually, and I loved the yin.

Served fairly warm. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a two finger khaki colour head of nice cream and thickness, and very good retention for the high ABV. Body colour is a dark solid black. Nontransparent / opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show.

Sm: A crudely appealing mixture of heavy floral hops with stout derived roast. Buttery creme brulee and vanilla mixed with light citrus. A strange mix, but nevertheless appealing. A moderate strength aroma.

T: Cream up front, with a dark malt/floral hop foundation. Vanilla is definitely present, along with some creme brulee on the climax. A bit buttery. A solid mixture of malty sweetness with mild hops. Surprisingly balanced. Notably, no alcohol comes through - nor does any yeast. It's certainly multidimensional, but the complexity and subtlety are not as impressive as they should be.

Mf: Smooth and wet, with some coarseness emerging intermittently. Good carbonation and thickness. Suits the flavour profile relatively well.

Dr: Very drinkable for the high ABV, but I'd sooner have just the yin by itself. The ABV is well hidden. The beer isn't fantastic; perhaps the independent beers exceed their sum here. I'd have it on-draught, but it's hardly worth revisiting from the bottle. That said, it certainly stands out as a black n tan, but I consider the inclusion of this "style" repugnant. Can we have some fucking respect for Ireland? Please? Fuck's sake.

Beer is black, or perhaps very dark brown. Does not look quite jet black. Small to moderately sized tan head.

Smell is quite hoppy. Grapefruit, orange, pine. Coffee, chocolate, roasted malt. More IPA than stout, but both are there. Nice scent.

Taste is good. I have never had a black & tan before, whether self-made or packaged, but the mix is interesting. Like the smell, the hoppy, IPA aspect comes out first. Orange, pineapple and pine. The roasted malt and chocolate flavours are present, much more diluted than in a proper stout but not in an unpleasant way. Tastes a bit creamy. Balanced between sweet and bitter, with elements of each, including caramel malt. Strong, but alcohol is well hidden for the abv.

Medium to full bodied, low to moderate carbonation. Slick, somewhat oily.

Overall, tasty. An unusual beer but I like it.

The sum is greater than the parts- that's what we're told. When it comes to beer, that translates to a black & tan that I can get on board with! Imperial IPA infused with imperial stout? What could possibly go wrong?

But much more like an imperial stout, the beer pours very, very dark brown; seemingly black until tilted so that the thinner edges show garnet highlights. Firmly headed with a dense slightly tanned head. Its creamy visual textures retain stubbornly and lace the glass with a plethora of random patters.

And then the hops begin to shine as the nose brings about the expected roasty espresso elements, but also with the sharp scent of grapefruit, grass, and pine. Complementary notes of cocoa powder, burnt toast, burnt toffee pasta starch, and gin-like alcohols decorate the peripheries of smell and grow wonderfully as the beer warms.

Powerful flavors of coffee grounds give the rich and earthen flavors that big stouts deserve. Caramel-sweet is in full support but likely goes undetected because of the battle that's going on above it. Espresso roast, cocoa powder, raw woods, campfire embers, sappy bitterness all reside on the dry side of the scale; but vie for attention against one another. The complexity that ensues chases the beer deep into the finish, getting drier and drier in taste until the malts completely dissolve.

Full bodied throughout, the beer's caramel-rich portions remain an underpinning to the dry textures that are more heavily celebrated. That starchy caramel malt texture steps down casually as the roasty dryness, resinous hop dryness, and bold alcohols dry the beer despite a moderate residual maltiness.

It's easy to want to pull the beer apart and form impressions on the stout portions as separate from the ipa portions. But together, we get the appreciation of both worlds, yet it can be argued that we get best of neither.

Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of big dark/roasted malt and citrus/pine hop flavors; with a great roasted malt and hop bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, moderately sticky, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Black and tan style. All around great balance and complexity of big dark/roasted malt and citrus/pine hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. Definitely felt like an imperial black IPA with the big hoppiness. Would be interested in aging this one to see what happens. A very enjoyable offering.

Appearance – Pours a dark brown color with a light brown thick creamy head that sticks around for a good long time and medium lacing.

Smell – A solid scent of malt, hops, chocolate, and coffee.

Taste – Roasted malts, hops, chocolate, and coffee. I really like the Yin (stout), though I personally prefer it wihout the Yang (IPA) mixed in.

Mouthfeel – Creamy, very nicely carbonated, and easy drinking for 11.1%abv. Finishes with a light bitter hoppiness.

Drinkability – Evil Twin stouts are among my favorite, and while this is very nice, I prefer both the Yin and the Yang better on their own. Still, this about as good as it gets for a black and tan.
