The beer comes in a clear golden straw color.

The aroma has crackery malt, grassy hops, a hint of smoke.

The flavor follows with lemon zest, bready malt, lightly smoked malt on the finish along with lager yeast notes.

A refreshing pilsner with an interesting hint of smoked malt.

Appearance: Yellow-gold, lots of particles, good head.

Smell: Skunky, bit of smoke.

Taste: Hits first with citrus and some skunk, then some breadiness. Just a little bit of smoke is noticeable.

Overall: I like smoked beers so picked up one of these as Evil Twin just started distribution in Minnesota. Not a very good first impression, kind of a mixed bag taste with only a hint of smoke flavor.

Clean golden yellow pour wtih a finger of head which quickly dissipated. Smells of pilsner malt, lemongrass, frosted flakes, slight smokiness, bread. The flavor is awesome. Think a hoppy pils with a subtle smoke touch. Bready, grassy bitterness, sweet malt, campfire smoke.
Light body with high carbonation, this is a very crushable beer.
Easy to drink, appealing to people that normally don't drink pilsners because they're boring (aka me!).. This is full of flavor, and although it seems absurd to have a sweet, hoppy, smoky beer all in one - it works, and it works well.

Poured into an IPA glass (best I could do).

Look: A lighter shade of burnt orange. A white sudsy head recedes to a modest film, while a wide band of foamy lacing sticks to the glass.

Aroma: Subdued, but general grassy notes abound. Faint hops, and even fainter smokiness.

Taste: A decently thick malt presence up front, followed by the typical grassy pilsner body. A decent amount of smokiness coats the body, and surprisingly adds a nice flavor to it. Just a bit of citrus an bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, a little dry.

Overall: I wasn't even in the mood for this and I really enjoyed it. It's definitely not something I'd want more than once though.

A - Pours a hazy gold with a one-finger foamy white head. Sticky lacing.

S - Aroma of light smoke, malt, and grain.

T - Taste follows the aroma. Flavors start off like a typical pilsner with strong malt and grain. There is a heavy smokey flavor in the finish along with a sharp hop bitterness.

M - Medium bodied with high carbonation. Very crisp with a dry finish.

O - A decent beer. The smoke tends to overpower the other flavors. Still worth trying.

Pour like any normal light beer ... No really detectable aroma, nothing for the nose to pick up on.
The first taste and all I could feel is carbonation, a bit too much for my liking.
Then, I can taste smoke, lots of it. Now I know what it feels like to be a ham inside a smoker!
The smoked taste and the light carbonated style was very balanced for me.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into an Upland pint glass.

A: Hazy gold with a huge fluffy white head and mild visible carbonation.

S: Smoky like an old campfire. Maybe some light pilsner malt aroma…but mostly smoke. Not particularly pleasant - very much one note.

T: Smoke, pilsner malts, smoke, some grassy and citrus hops, and more campfire smoke in the hang.

M: Light body, modest carbonation sensation, no alcohol presence to speak of.

O: There's just too much smoke here with no other flavors big enough to hang with it or balance it out. I suspect it may have been a tasty pilsner, but instead it ended up as a glass of smoke that you needed to hunt around for any other flavors, rather than the smoke being an integrated part of the beer's flavor profile. Not recommended.

EDIT - Having now read some of the reviews below describing the smoke flavor as "light", I'm wondering if there may be some batch variation or perhaps something with the particular bottle I drank.

Bottled 2/10/14.

Pours a hazy yellow with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, citrus fruit, and slight smoke aromas. Taste is much the same with malt, citrus zest, and slight smoke flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with fairly subdued smoke qualities and an interesting citrus presence that I wasn't expecting.

Lightly hazed pale gold with a short head of clean white foam that clings to the glass.

A mix of pilsner with a good dose of hops and smoked malt. Sweet and smokey with hops.

A very hoppy pilsner flavor up front with the bitterness coming in even more at the end. The smoke is not real strong and is noticed at the back end and in the aftertaste.

Crisp with a light to medium body. Very clean and dry finish on the palate.

I'm not a pilsner fan, but a huge smoked beer fan. This is a mix of both, but leans quite a bit more towards the pilsner end. A very hoppy one at that. An interesting beer and well done. Worth a try.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.
Cloudy gold in color, with a nice, bright head of foam.
Aroma-Pale malt
Taste-Pale malt, sharp noble hop note, wispy, barely there smoked malt, but enough to provide a nice depth of flavor. Price is a bit prohibitive, but a nice match for a loaded hot dog or burger.

I am so excited to taste this particular ale. Not because of the notoriety of its brewer, but due to the unorthodox nature of an offering as odd as a smoked pilsner. All of the smoked beers I've tried have been heavier darker ales but this is a light pilsner style beer, I am quite perplexed. The pour is that of a traditional pilsner, golden straw yellow color with a white head and little lacing. The nose of this beer is my favorite thing about it. There is all the sweet simple aromas of a well made pilsner accented by the very natural organic smell of smoke. The aroma makes me salivate and beg to taste. The flavir is exactly what the nose promised, just not as dynamic. The beer is balanced and very well reminiscent of the style and the smoke is natural and adds complexity unlike the smoke on many lesser beers. This is a great beer that begs to be drank and enjoyed. Unorthodox does not always work....This time it does.

Bottled 11/13/13 and poured 2/12/14. A pricey $4 single.

Appearance: A bit dark for the style, about an orange color with a slight haziness. Lacing is alright. Nice look. (4/5)

Smell: Your typical pilsner with that hay/straw sort of smell, but this one adds a slight smokiness -- not at all strong. Quite subtle. I like it for the style. (4/5)

Taste/feel: Tastes like you'd probably expect. Has a pilsner flavor, with a fair amount of smoke added -- but not too much. Bone dry finish. Sharp bitterness on the end as well. I should hate this beer, as the pilsner flavor mixed with the smoke gives a flavor reminiscent of a Band-Aid... but I don't. There's actually a solid hop profile on this beer along side a seemingly nice extra dash of caramel malt to give a surprisingly nice flavor depth. This brew has a high carbonation, and a light/medium feel, as to be expected for the style. (3.75/4)

I wasn't impressed at all at first sip, bug it grew on me pretty fast. Is this beer worth four bucks a single? No. At the same time, there's a surprising amount of different flavors to be found in this brew, making it the best pilsner I've had, probably. The smoke, the sweetness, the hops -- enjoyable beer, especially for a style I'm normally left unimpressed with. I can understand the score of this beer though, if nothing else but the high price. (4/5)

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, bottled on 11/13/2013. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy pale golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon zest, orange zest, pear, biscuit, cracker, wood smoke, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance of malt, hop, and smoke notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon zest, orange zest, pear, biscuit, cracker, wood smoke, herbal, floral, grass, light pine, light honey, and yeast earthiness. Light floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon/orange zest, pear, biscuit, cracker, wood smoke, herbal, floral, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of malt, hop, and smoke flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice smoked pilsner. All around good balance of malt, hop, and smoke flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

P: Pours a pale golden body with a milky white cap.

S: Aroma is similar to a tweed couch. Pilsner malt, musty hops, leather, stone fruit, chalky esters and bonfire ash. Has a barnyard aroma to plays nicely with the delicate smoke.

T/M: Follows the nose with a nice profile of smoky wheat, a healthy dose of spice, chalky yeast, salt and old leather. Medium body with a sting of carbonation that erupts on the tongue. Finishes semi sry with a plastic aftertaste.

O: Hands down one of the best smoked beers I have tried. Crisp clean and a refined smoke that enhances the flavor rather than resemble liquid smoke. Easy drinkability that really delivers.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.25 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner glass.

Huge hiss when opening. Doesn't gush, but way over carbbed. Head is 80% of the glass even with a slow pour. Settles with thick soapy retention and thick clumping lace. Body color is a neat opaque looking mix of gold lemon at the bottom and light chestnut through the middle, with micro carbonation.

Faint smoke, not particularly noticeable, some soft white bread but quite closed. There's next to nothing going on here.

The phenols are coming out on this sucker. A good subtle hint of smoke, but a real nice sweet peach like quality of fruit. The phenolic action is getting a bit novocaine medicine like on the finish though. Carbonation is quite large, no surprise but gives an almost champagne mimosa quality with the fruit angle. Mouthfeel is solid malt backbone and coating, pretty straightforward.

A little bit out of control, but also perhap a bit old possibly. Still there's something to enjoy here, it's a neat combination though, just wish the smoked quality was much more rich and noticeable.

Poured into a pilsner glass- beautiful golden color, three fingers of foamy white head and great retention and lacing. Couldn't ask it to look any better.

Smell is interesting- not a refined scent but interesting and earthy. I smell some yeasty funk along with a sort of burnt campfire thing.

Taste is equally unusual but better blended- yeast funk remains throughout the taste, campfire tastes longer towards the end, earthy grains up front and a pretty clean dry finish.

Mouthfeel is good- medium light body, crisply carbonated. This is certainly a very interesting take on a pilsner and perhaps something a cowboy would drink.

Milky amber orange color with a head with short retention.
Nice bold and predominant aroma of bacon that would not go away.
Flavor of smoked malts with notes of bacon, citrusy hops and pepper. Dry and slightly acid aftertaste.
Excellent beer, perfect level of smokiness that still gives room for other flavors, definitely an experience that paid off.

No head really with decent lacing on a murky golden with slight copper hue body. Aroma is strongly smokey and hint of mesquite and only light smoked meat presence, some grass as well. Flavors present and interesting mix of orange and lemon citrus fading in and out with smoked meats and campfire flavors. A rapidly changing and dynamic flavor. medium body and moderate carbonation. Appearance... cloudy orange beer with head colour white of almost 2 fingers
Aroma... grass, floral very smokey. Fresh and strong smell with a little touch of malty aroma too
Taste... citrus and herbal, touch of malt with smokey wood in mouth, bitterness appears lately to complete a complex beer
Mouthfeel... medium/full body and medium/soft carbonation
Overall... a very nice beer, bitterness is present in a light style, refreshing beer being a smoked pilsner. Well executed idea. To repeat.

The label says a smoked pilsner, that doesn't seem to fit this beer much.Poured into a becker a slight hazed honey color with a large blooming sticky white head that left multiple broken rings of lace as it settled into a frothy mass.Citrusy hops and mild toasted grain stand out most with the smoke being pretty faint.Quite dry on the palate with leafy and citric hops standing out mostly with faint smoke in the finish.A full bodied beer it goes down pretty easy.I like this beer,it's not alot like a pilsner in the flavor and aroma department, and it's not very smokey, still it's pretty damn good and great on a hot humid day like today.

Pours a hazy, gold color. 1/2 inch head of a white color. Good retention and great lacing. Smells of smoke, hops, hint of citrus, sweet malt, and a hint of pale malt. Fits the style of a Smoked Beer. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes sharply of smoke, pale malt, sweet malt, and slight hop. Overall, the smoke is distinct but not overwhelming, and other flavors are distinguished. This is a very session-able beer.

22oz bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1/2" off-white head over the slightly cloudy golden amber brew. Head recedes gradually, with lasting lace. Aroma is sweet with obvious smoke presence. Cool. Everyone always seems to scrimp on smoke.

Taste has smoke from head to tail, to my utter surprise. Beyond that, sweet upfront, touch of citrus in the middle, reasonably balanced closed, bitter aftertaste. Mouthfeel is soft and smooth, and drinkability is easy. Nice brew, and delivers the advertised smoke. Two thumbs up!

A: The beer is clear dark yellow in color and has slight hints of visible carbonation. It poured with a short head consisting of large bubbles that quickly died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of smoked malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has nice flavors of smoky malts (which linger through the finish) along with hints of underlying bready malts. It has a light amount of bitterness and hints of grassy hops.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: I found this beer to be very enjoyable and drinkable because the smoked flavors in the taste were not overpowering. This beer seems like it would pair well with barbecued food because it is clean and has some refreshing properties.

A: Pours a mostly clear medium to dark golden yellow in color with light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and very light hints of orange + apricot highlights. The beer has a quarter finger tall sudsy/soapy white head that quickly reduces to a medium sized thin patch of larger bubbles and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of smoke with some very light hints of iodine.

T: Upfront there are light flavors of bready malts along with a light amount of grassy hops. All of that is underneath a light to moderate flavor of smoke with just a hint of fatty pork BBQ-ing. There are light hints of iodine as well. Light amounts of lingering bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: I really enjoyed the fact that the smokiness of this beer was not overly intense or too over the top, it kept the beer approachable and easy to enjoy. The aroma of the beer is slightly one dimensional but the flavors are more complex and interesting - this is just what I would expect a smoked pilsener to be. A little too intense to be an easy drinker or a sessionable beer but I would definitely like to have this one again, preferably with some BBQ.
