11.2 oz bottle poured into an English pub glass. Hazy brown-bronze color with a thin layer of whitish creamy froth. Aroma is malt-forward I suppose, quite sweet but with a perfumed resinous hop overlay: Burnt brown sugar, pine needles, orange marmalade, strawberry-kiwi, yellow grapefruit, lemon balm, brown toast. Rich toffee and walnut on the palate, with a DIPA level of resinous bitterness but the more fruity hop notes downplayed. Fairly heavy and stout of body, low end carbonation and a bitter tea, rose, and pine resin/cough drop finish that somehow manages to scrub away the previous sweetness. The alcohol taste is decidedly tame and dialed down, a little diacetyl near the back end ... Deep and darkly rich, notably nutty. Maybe some of this explains the odd reference to Christmas beers on the label. Hops are now starting to numb the palate a little after a slow start. This is different ... An "imperial" English IPA?

A: cloudy burnt yellow. When I hold it away from the light, the color reminds me of an overripe banana. Up to the light there might be a tinge of orange. The head sustained quite well, with some lacing.
S: mid-to-low strength wet cardboard with some herb notes (rosemary?) and a caramel-like sweetness behind it.
T: sort of balanced beginning. I note the bitterness a little more (lemon-grass earthiness), but there is a hint of a more honey (than caramel) sweetness as well. The flavors meld well in the end, but then slowly fade.
M: carbonation is decent throughout, but there isn't much of an impact on the mouth in my mind, a light lingering bitterness.
O: although I am not impressed with the beer hitting the style as I'd like (needs a little more hops punch), I did enjoy drinking the beer. The lighter overall taste reminded me of session IPAs I've had, but with more depth, and better than pretty much all of the beers I've had in that style.
