22oz bottle split and poured into a tulip.

A: Pours a very dark opaque brown with a light tannish cream head. A touch of lacing on the glass. Easily can swirl the glass to create more head. A coffee like brownish hue with a mocha top.

S: Floral hops are the first thing with a chocolaty backbone. Roasted malts as well a bit of nuttiness. Bit of a saison presence. Light only gets through about 1/8 inch.

T: This is one complex beer, lots of flavor in it. Starts off a hoppy yet roasty profile. Fresh floral and citrus hops that linger perfectly with the Brett. Bit of nuttiness on the backend. Certainly a funkiness to it from the Brett. Taste more boozy than it is. The farmhousey flavor comes out more when it lingers in the backend with the hops.

M: Medium body with low carbonation. Quite crisp finish. Leaves you with a dry mouthfeel. Not overly sticky for the hops.

Overall a very complex and interesting beer that took a lot of thought to review. A new approach on one of my favorite styles. Would love to get another to set down for a year to let the yeast develop.

Not sure why I didn't give this a 5 across the board. I've been making a point to try both Black IPAs and anything with Brett for a few years now, but I haven't seen a pairing of the two. An issue I have with some Brett offerings is a lack of balance as many tend to be overpowered by the Brett funk. Although this beer is unmistakably Brett it is also unmistakably a very hoppy, roasty black beer. This beer is firing on all cylinders and is everything one should expect from a Brett black IPA.

A: as advertised, black. Careful pour yields a finger foam, nice lacing. A surprisingly thick sediment coated the bottom of the bomber after the last pour. The last few drops were a dark, thick motor oil, but I always enjoy the taste and mouthfeel addition of sediment to the final pour when present.

S: hops, roast, brett. I honestly didn't appreciate the smell enough and just wanted to dive in.

T/M have to be considered together here IMO. Very silky, bitter, funk, bbq roast. I'm feeling redundant but everything is as advertised for a black Brett IPA with nothing more, but everything meeting hopes and expectations perfectly. The aftertaste is teasing me. Time to go to bed, and I regret having to brush my teeth and drink water.

O: see above. I'm very impressed and wish I had bought more. Purchased at a wonderful diamond in the rough Community Tap in Greenville, SC. I bought one bomber amongst other purchases and am kicking myself for using restraint in a beer store for once. I may call a friend to shelve away a few more to ensure I have something to look forward to for next visit.

Served from bottle into a Westbrook snifter (it was brewed there at least). Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, funk, and earth. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark chocolate, roasted malt, cream, earth, earth hop, and subtle dark fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was fairly good brew. In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of this style but I'm always open to revisiting things. This one did have some nice touches going on, but the flavor was definitely way more on the roasty side than I usually enjoy. However this was still a fairly nicely put together brew. Definitely worth your time if you are a fan of the style.

I was warned it was a little odd looking and she was right...murky brown, like iced coffee with cream. It's not necessarily unattractive though, the head is thick and creamy, covering the surface for the duration. Resinous, oily pine hop aromas with some char and earth thrown into the mix. Flavors of bitter pine, subtle roast, hefty citrus rind, light coffee, and some herbal hops. No funkiness so speak of, but there is an interesting peppery heat in the finish. Aggressively bitter hops linger on the tongue well after the last sip. Medium bodied with a dry finish. Intriguing and pretty well done all around.

Poured into a Dogfish Head pint glass. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass, with a half finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. Light aroma of citrus hops, bready malt, faintly earthy. Flavor starts with day old coffee, toasted, slightly smoky malt, dry and slightly astringent. Light fruit fruit flavor (apple and pear) develop in the background, then finishes dry, roasty, with hop bitterness and the brett yeast becomes more noticeable. Finish is a bit astringent and dry, which may be a plus for brett fans. Medium bodied. An interesting, rather idiosyncratic ABA; I like the light touch of brett (or at least it is well covered by the nice toasty malt), but I'm not sure it works well with this very dry toasty body. I'm a fan of very light, deft touches of brett, and it is not assertive in this beer. Intriguing, but not a beer I will want to return to.
