22oz Bomber
$4.99 (Sale)
Binny's - Bolingbrook

Plastic Man is bright golden, even leaning toward orange in the right light. Clarity is good throughout while both streams and bursts of carbonation rush to the surface. The foam is bulbous and forms easily, three fingers on the pour as a matter of fact. It settles eventually to a sudsy, craggy cap a finger thick that leaves chunks plastered to the glass here and there.

The smell kicks off with a nasal plundering wildflower and medicinal note. The medicinal runs spectrum of faint Band-Aids to Flintstone's Vitamins. Let me explain, there is a touch of unidentifiable citrus present, that reminds me of yuzu actually, and when combined with the medicinal quality becomes not unlike Flintstone's vitamins. Soft orange and sweet apple notes run the backend. Earthy and minerality characteristics collide with a solid graham cracker maltiness.

The flavor, while decent, leaves something to be desired. The medicinal qualities have segue into clove, which becomes stronger with warmth. The profile leans toward sweet more than I'd like. The malt profile brings along smooth but ample notes of graham cracker and caramel which accentuates the orange and apple mentioned above. There's a whisper of that citrus that's reminiscent to yuzu, maybe I say that because yuzu seems to be a conglomeration of many fruits. The finish is rather chalky and bland. Again, decent.

The body is heftier than I would like in saison but with this beer being what it is, not necessarily a saison, the weight works well enough. The finish is a touch medicinal with a strange lingering bitterness, a bit metallic. Drinkability is middle of the road and one pour would be enough for myself.

Plastic Man is alright. There's nothing unique, or even very good, about it in all honestly, it's just decent. There's a nice fruitiness but the medicinal qualities seem to knock that down a bit while the base is good if not a little sweet for my tastes. Can't say I'd recommend this to too many people. It's a shame too because both Westbrook and Local Option can brew some damn fine beer.

At When Pigs Fly. In a snifter the beer was a hazy orange color with a thin white head. There was a lot of lace.

Aroma of citrus and apple.

The taste delivered more than the aroma suggested. Tangerine, orange, lemon. More of an apple taste late.

This was a crisp and refreshing beer. I liked it.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Pours with a big white head. Hazy deep orange. Settles to a nice layer of foam.

Smell - Sweet and fruity smelling. Really spicy. Bit of apples and caramel.

Taste - Fruity and spicy. Aggressive bitterness. Grassy and spicy in the finish. Just a bit of earthiness.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation makes it feel lighter than it is. Very bitter.

Overall - It doesn't taste like plastic at least. Not the most pleasant tasting saison.

Served from bottle into a Westbrook snifter (proper!). Poured a hazy golden yellow-orange with a one finger off-white head that subsided to a half finger slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, wheat, spice, citrus, basil, and earth. The flavor was of sweet malt, basil, spice, earth, wheat, and subtle fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty decent brew. There was a big spice aspect going on in this one if I am honest. A little more than one would expect from this particular style. There were actually quite a few weird spices going on if I am honest that I was not able to identify. This was decently drinkable despite this fact, but it definitely added a bit to the brew that I don't feel was needed at all. Worth your time trying if you get the chance, but that is about it.

On tap at Max's (from notes 6/21/13)

A: Cloudy grayish amber blonde with nice lacing.

S: Floral and citrus with some yeast funk.

T: Nice solid farmhouse taste. A bit of herbs and yeastiness. It's kind of hard to pin down the flavors. Kind of tastes like a meadow.

M: Smooth with just a bit of crispness throughout.

O: Not bad. Quite interesting, but I am new to the style. This is only my second or third saison. Good stuff and always different. I love collaborations and Evil Twin.

I tried this side by side with De Rank Saison from Belgium.

De Rank De Dottignies has always been the gold standard in terms of Farmhouse Ales (Saisons), far surpassing Dupont, which to me tastes more like a rotted sour.

Plasticman is the best Saison I have tried in a bottle in the US.

If your a fan of Saison's you have to try this one. You will not be disappointed.

Poured into a 3 Monts tulip. Pours a burnished golden amber with a three finger white head that dissipated slowly leaving heavy lacing. Spicy aroma of apple and light stone fruit, coriander, Belgian yeast, slightl mineral. Flavor is subdued light fruit (apple and peach), light citrus, hints of wild yeast, semi-dry with faint sweetness in the start, finishing with an herbal bitterness and rather dry. Light bodied with peppery active carbonation. The flavor is quite understated and is somewhat overbalanced by the the herbal bitterness in the middle and end. The very light flavors are pleasant and appropriate for a light farmhouse ale, but leave me wishing for some more robust flavoring. A quiet and perhaps too subdued saison. Glad I tried it, but do not need to seek it out again.

appearance: Hazy golden. Big foamy white head and messy lacing.
smell: Pretty simple and pleasant. Mostly easy going fruit with just a touch of yeasty funk.
taste: Much like the nose. Quite an easy drinker. A slight bitterness in the finish makes it a little more interesting.
overall: Enjoyed this. Not spectacular but an easy drinking, pleasant brew.

On-tap at Thirsty Monk, Asheville, NC

A: The beer is very hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a finger high white head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light aromas of peppery spices are present in the nose along with some hints of lemon citrus.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, but is a littler more fruity with flavors of sour apples and lemons; these are rounded out by peppery spices towards the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This saison was quite drinkable and the mélange of different flavors made it rather interesting.

22 oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. Acquired this bottle from the local Binny's. I've never had any beers before from Westbrook or Local Option. No idea what to expect here.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours three big fluffy fingers of off-white head on top of a hazed lemon body with an orange tint to it. Looks pretty nice.

S - Smells "carbonated", just like the bottle says, a bit of dusty yeast, lemon zest, some pineapple, and some faint spice rack notes in the background. A fairly subdued aroma, but it hits it's mark.

T - Taste doesn't really hit it for me as much as I thought it would, based on the smell. The lemon zest / pineapple doesn't carry through in the taste as much as I'd like, and there is a pervasive bitterness on the finish that I don't particularly care for. At least it doesn't taste like plastic gloves or latex. I'll give it points for the effort.

M - Goes down quick and clean, and finishes bitter and dry on the palate.

Overall, not a particularly great saison. More full bodied than I had expected, and not really refreshing or sessionable even at 5.50% abv. Definitely not as good as I was hoping for, but I appreciate the effort. Worth trying once, if you are a fan of saisons.
