Poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey Teku. The pour is gorgeous. It's jet black and bars the faintest trace of light from escaping. The head is massive, tan, and lasts quite long for such a high ABV beer. The nose carries both the burnt, roasted char notes of a Russian Imperial Stout and the coffee notes promised by the brewer, though they are not as intense as I anticipated (or hoped for). There's also a very faint trace of booziness on the nose as well, but it doesn't detract at all.

Wowee!!! Full body, fantastic flavor, and a wonderfully creamy, silky feel. The bitter and sweet flavors collide in your mouth right from the get-go. There's none of that ``well it's sweet up front and bitter in back'' nonsense. These flavors don't file in an orderly fashion. It's all about the contrast of big roasty notes going toe-to-toe with achingly bitter roasted malt and coffee. The coffee flavors are really good in this beer too (though not quite as good as in KBS). They tend toward the rich, high quality, chocolatey coffee flavors instead of the bitter, grassy ``cold coffee'' flavors. Nice dry finish and extremely drinkable for such high ABV. I don't get much booziness at all, just the slightest trace of warmth in the back of the mouth.

This might be the best coffee stout I've had not named KBS. The balance between sweet malt and bitter roast is outstanding, and the coffee flavor is superb. My only complaints are the price (though it's still worth it) and that I'd like to have even more of that rich coffee flavor (yes, I'm crazy). This is an awesome beer.

Tasting 9/9/14

This big stout shows off the big, thick, robust body that stout lovers look for. It's heavy and black, pouring completely viscous and absolutely opaque. The head, a medium-brown colored crown, sits proudly at two fingers, thick and immovable. It leaves on the glass an equally proud display of heavy lacing.
This beer displays all kinds of complexity, strength and balance in good measure. There's a show of roast, to be sure: the malts lay it down, the coffee is evident and seems fresh, there's a bit of char and some toasted nut to add to it all. What it does extremely well, though, is to cut out any acridity, any acidity that roasting tends to bring out, or any harshness in the char. Then it brings out a very creamy sweetness, lots of vanilla and an almost whipped cream note with, perhaps, a touch of molasses on the end. There's a little heat with very little ethanolic booziness. Really, there's just so much coffee, sweetness and roast balancing each other so nicely; this is a really excellent brew.
The thick and viscous body is as expected, with the robustness likewise expected. It flows on the tongue, pretty heavy in the middle but very smooth and with lots of complexity lingering in the finish.
