22 oz bottle purchased at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.

Pours a deep, dark black, almost ink-like. Small, quarter inch head, not much lacing.

Smells deeply chocolately and roasty. Some nutty aromas well.

Great flavors. The heat of peppers, a smoother heat, rather than a biting heat, is folded very nicely into a chocolate blanket. The hazelnut flavor is slightly less pronounced than I like, but is nice, and adds a earthy sweetness to the beer. A bit of coffee bitterness on the palate as well.

Thick, syrupy mouthfeel much like the base beer. Very creamy, and pretty drinkable, considering the alcohol content.

So glad I took a trip to this great grocery store and found this beer on the shelf. Apparently it's made specifically for them, and its awesome. (759 characters)

Choco chip cookies and coffee in th nose.

Flavor: Coffee (moderate), faint chili dark chocolate (high), very good balance.
Nearly too sweet. Fine, lingering aftertase. (170 characters)

32oz. Growler from Decicco's Ardsley into a Founders snifter.

Pours a coarse layer of mocha colored bubbles with poor retention. Beer is pitch black and thick. Oily legs with spotty lace that doesn't really linger. Average.

Nose is stale chocolate and coffee beans with hints of roast and fudge sweetness. No real chili presence though the hazelnut lends a bit of nuttiness and smooths out the experience. Decent.

Opens sweet and chocolate-y. Hints of molasses, fudge, and espresso beans in the middle with perhaps a hazelnut presence in the back. End is more chocolate, cocoa, and fudge but with a nice, subtle heat from the chili. Finishes sweet and spicy with a lingering, chocolate and roast aftertaste. Pretty good though not as good as the original.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Thick and oily in the mouth and goes down slick and rich. Messy, accented finish with a sticky, lingering, heated aftertaste. Nice.

A decent beer but for some reason, the addition of hazelnut and chili actually takes away from the original. The heat at the end is expected and appreciated. However, the hazelnut almost fractures the otherwise chocolate, molasses and coffee masterpiece. Still decent but not as good.

As a side note, the store manager that filled this didn't know what he was doing at all... he took the run-off from the fill into a plastic cup and poured it back into the growler... which I suspect may have affected the carbonation and served to oxidize the beer quicker, introducing more air (I had the growler for 5 days before opening). Regardless, I will revisit this one. (1,592 characters)

32 oz. growler poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Inky black. Fleeting mocha head. The thinnest of collars.

Smell - Not a very strong aroma. Chocolate. Some peppers.

Taste - Chocolatey. Very chocolatey. Definite sweet nuttiness that I could qualify as hazelnuts. Little bit of pepper in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Kinda heavy.

Overall - Didn't find this to be as good as the regular. Maybe a fault of the growler. (441 characters)
