On draft at Winking Lizard Lizardville on 1/17/12.
Apparently this beer is aged in a blend of whiskey and pinot noir barrels.
Dark brown with a tall frothy head. Nice homeycomb of lace is left behind.
Smells immediatly of fresh figs and dates.
The flavor is a tad sour actually Red wine with strong oak flavors that add a whopping dryness to the brew. Fig and date are the only thing that clue you into the style. Black raisin can also be found but this beer is just way too sweet.
Dry feel with lingering sweetness. Boozy.
Overall this was interesting, but also out of my comfort zone from normal drinking. Not a true doppelbock.

500 ml bottle was poured into a mug.
Appearance: A one finger off white head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark brown amber color with no vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing on the glass as the beer was drank.
Smell: Aww man, liquid bread baby. Caramel, toffee, lager yeast, grassy hops, raisins, figs, toasted, and bready malts.
Taste: Nice and malty like a doppelbock should be. Extremely tasty and delicious. A little warm booze too.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, a little chewy, some booze alcohol, low to medium carbonation, some sweetness, and like eating a meal. Very delicious.
Overall: Got to love German doppelbocks. Especially monks brewing this beer sine 1330. Cheers to the monks who brew this beer and cheers to all the other people who have had the chance to enjoy this treat of a beer.

Poured two inches of cream colored head and a dark ruby body. Decent head retention: head gradually fades to a thin ribbon and leaves sparse sudsy lacing. Smell is of roasty malt and heavy on the dark fruit - some figs, some raisins. Alcohol present. Taste follows the nose. Little bit of booze comes through. Medium-bodied with light carbonation and slightly bitter-sweet. Would maybe have this beer one more time, but no more than that. Not to crazy about tasting those dark fruits in my hocks.
