So I picked this one up after reading the new york times article about doppelbocks, but I have to say I'm not too sure how this one got rated any higher than the others..
Poured into a big German beer glass so that the whole 17oz bottle would fit. The beer was a dark brown with a whiskey esque hue when light hits the glass...carbonation visible with a very think off white slightly coffee colored head.
The nose is really boosey(even compared to the smutanoator), alcohol, chocolate notes, nutty , tobacco, and a slight whiskey like quality.
Overall very smooth with light roasted malt hints of chocolate, hazelnut, a bit of tobacco, and again a bit of alcohol....chewy and extremely full bodied, almost heavy....and very filling, not the best beer for after dinner, but extremely drinkable for $3.49 per 17oz bottle...overall this beer was really good, but
I can't say better than Salavator, and definitively not better than Celebrator...I try not to compare beers in reviews, but the New York Times brought this on.

Poured two inches of cream colored head and a dark ruby body. Decent head retention: head gradually fades to a thin ribbon and leaves sparse sudsy lacing. Smell is of roasty malt and heavy on the dark fruit - some figs, some raisins. Alcohol present. Taste follows the nose. Little bit of booze comes through. Medium-bodied with light carbonation and slightly bitter-sweet. Would maybe have this beer one more time, but no more than that. Not to crazy about tasting those dark fruits in my hocks.

Appearance: Chestnut brown; no head retention
Aroma: Malty; dried fruit; slight hop notes
Taste: Roasted malty flavor; hoppy; not bad, but nothing special; drinkable, though.
Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores
